  1. *shrug* If developers are hard coding colours into a program, and it's in violation of the HIG, I'd say it constitutes a bug.
If that's the case then gnome wouldn't exist as we know it. There many things gnome does against its own HIG because the HIG is just plain outdated and wrong.

of course they matter :) Gnome has a big audience, but the specifics of gnome theming that you are looking into do not.
Like I said, I do not want a polular forum/large audience. Just whatever it takes to improve things.

There's a line, and an extent where unification/co-ordination is a good thing. Take for example the xdg desktop menu spec, building a standard way for them both to setup their menus. That's a good thing. The move towards similar icon setups, that's a good thing.
menu unity is a necesssity because of icon names. Icon naming convention? Good thing because of the menu and apps and so many want so many diff icon sets from both desktops. That doesn't mean widgets and api have to be unified.

Graphical consistency is a good thing. Sure some people out there like their GTK apps, some like their QT apps, but deciding that everyone should use one or the other is just plain snobbery. Trying to mix and match QT and GTK apps isnt fun. They work great together, but they often look terrible. Don't you agree that it would be much better if themers of multiple desktops worked together? the two would be able to interoperate much more, and that I believe is a good thing.
not in widgets/api. Absolutely not. I like gnome, not kde. Don't want any thing from kde.

I can see what you mean when talking about individuality, but that's selfish. It's like me talking to someone and saying im individual because I have a better computer. Appearance is only a small part in identity of a desktop, it's how the applications work, how they are presented, what features they contain, how big they are.
I want to improve gnome and that's selfish? Huh, and here I thought I was giving of myself. What was I thinking? :wall:

Like I said before, it wouldnt take much more effort to make this setup work for multiple desktop environments, and the benefits of doing so would be great. Not doing so is simply lazy and ignores the benifits of co-operation.
It's not lazy, its efficient. Cooperation? That's the goal, didn't you read? Gnome devel and themers cooperating with each other. :wall: It's free, other de's/wm's are more than welcome to the code, which I have, and wouldn't have, anything to do with.
  2. well like I said, we're just themers. Some idiots, some not, but none of us are going to join mailing list to particiapate in 5% of the action.

I like your gnomeHIG thingy  but still, it is not bugs. What we are desiring is untapped potential. Most of it is already there. We just need to know how. Or devel just needs to impliment underlying code, then tell us what and how. It's very simple really and it wouldn't take long. The two sides just need to sit down at the table.

As far as a forum goes, gnome is quite enough and has a very large audience. Others do not matter. It would be very easy to get it off the ground, as we've seen. It just needs to be ran is all, but I'm not interested in anything like that and only want to deal with gnome gui. Unification of wm's/de's is the last thing we need. It's been tried and gone nowhere, because the 2 big boys are too diff, and that's good and how it should be. It's why they exist and came to be what they are. DE's. Does the word environment ring any bells? Why kill that? It's a beautiful thing! Individulality! Success, achievment, top dog...all that good stuff.

  3. I don't think gnome even had much ability to look good, not long ago. So while it surely would have helped, it's like....why bother? Now things are much better. The next gnome release has some gtk changes giving more power in the font color department, or so it seems. It'll be great if it works as stated and back compat is maintained. I've seen more movement towards this 'hard coded color control' by apps, and that needs to be stopped. If the themer/engine writer can override it...that's fine, but we'll have to know how, and the option to override is not usually considered by the developers. They think if it looks good with gtk (no engine) and the default engine (clearlooks), they've done thier job and do not need to worry about anyone else.

  4. Funny thing is John........it's still not saving the fstab.

Are you sure you are editing the fstab on the hard drive? If you do not (in rescue mode) mount the partitions, go to console, and chroot /mnt, you will be editing the rescue cd fstab in memory.

  5. I don't have mandrake installed anymore much less sane_anything but here's a few things to try.

    1. delete the icons and then run the command

    gnome-session-save

    2. open gconf-editor (command), Configuration Editor (menu) and dig around in there for anything sane/xsane? If you unistalled the program the problam is most likely in an xml file somewhere in .gnome2 or .gconf in your home dir.

  6. Nice and clean.

Thanks. I made a version w/o the duck

Slider is proposed (were supposed to vote this weekend but are having poll problems) to be included in default dapper to replace the old drab gnome defaults, except Clearlooks. So I did it to replace Glider and go with Tango icons.

If anyone wants the improved shadows Tango icons

  7. When I was in my early learning stage I used Dreamweaver. It's fine for that purpose but if you focus on css, you'll soon find the only app you need is a text editor that knows html. Of course you have to do what the class requires, but if you find yourself interested, grasping the code, and wanting to be w3c compliant, you'll find yourself wasting a lot of time and having to unlearn bad habbits and undo a lot of junk those apps do. Just something to keep in mind while you are forced to use them. Then, some people prefer to master them, but dreamweaver pickles my brain. I think it takes far longer to learn dreamweaver than web design using a text editor. Most of all...Have Fun!

  8. bummer, my kodak cd33 works in ubuntu dapper in gthumb, but with problems. Once I get pics, or decide not to get pics, I can't go back in another session and get them even though they are still on the camera. Hope you get it working. Try gthumb.

  9. I did not say the board admin supported any such action nor did I suggest anyone else do what I would do. I agreed with what Gowator stated then continued with what I would do. Still, illegal discussions are not against board guidelines so if that is what you want, it should be added.

  10. no, first let them login, nail them and teach them a lesson, then reinstall

and in doing so, drag yourself to the same level. excellent idea.

I guess it depends how you do it.

I had some guy at a uni somewhere hacking my account in my old job .. he was running linux somewhere (don't remember anymore) on a shared machine in a uni.

I hacked his account and left him a nice-ish login message basically just saying "Its not big and its not clever and if you try again I would report him to the uni"

    Never heard back!

I think he/she probably thought they were some smart-ass but just turning the tables was enough to get em to run and hide ...

Exactly! To do otherwise encourages the behavior to continue. If that doesn't work, being a Texan first and american second, the law then falls into my hands because PC/Global law is a failure, and after not heeding a second warning and their hardware gets fried, they can't boot, and it cost then money, they come to realize what amatures they are and then they'll stop running around cracking. Actions>Consequences!
  11. After having software installed on my win98se w/o my permission, and since I have children, I determined to know everything about how a os works, despite the fact I hated computers. I quickly got bored with my secure win98se-lite-hack, found myself addicted to hacking, and saw mandrake-7.2 at walmart. Researched, told my wife all about it, and she bought it  Didn't work with some of my newer, crappy intel hardware so I waited a year and bought ML8.1.

  12. ....are things slowly spiraling down for Mandriva?
yes, but as pointed out it has been for a long time, though I think it has increased, and will level out. Question is, how long will it last after that?

When the Mandriva Club came out they said that was the death of the company but not so.
That's because this board was here, available, and flurishing to take the backlash and overflow. The Club definately hurt Mandriva, no doubt.

RH, Slackware and Debian have been around for a long, long time but gentoo was just a rage til people figured out the benifits weren't worth the time and wear and tear, for most users, and it was something neat everyone just wanted to try. That's all. It is put together well, it's just not for most users, so how could it remain so popular?

If you step back so you can see the forest for the trees, you will see that there's not much seperating all these linux distros; IMHO these distro wars become so bitter precisely because those differences are so small.
    ..well said. Linux is Linux.
  13. that post has been removed so that it may be discussed amongst the administration.

That's nice, but what is there to discuss? When I was a mod we would have never even thought of saying that on the forum. You either do the job or keep your malicous thoughts to yourself. You do not cause problems, you solve them. If you can't grasp that basic concept because you either do not care, are too complacent, or have no clue.... you do not need to be a mod any more. Simple.

  14. if you feel you have been personally attacked (which is against our guidelines) feel free to contact any mod or admin with the specifics and it will be dealt with, but a cursory examination of this thread reveals no direct attacks on you, but simply attacks on the idea of running root without a password.

A Global Mod accused a Member, with a good history, of trolling. Apology is in order. If the Mod truely thought it was trollish why was it left here? Obviously he didn't, so the statement shouldn't have been made. Simple.

  15. Hi all, I just removed a password from my root account the other day (passwd -d root) and I feel so free haha!

I just wanted to say this because of all the nutso posts I see against this. I avoided doing this for a while but then it occured to me that:

    a) I run Win XP / Win 98 on most of my machines , they are ALWAYS running as root! At least on my Linux boxes the virus/hacker has to type SU

b There arent a lot of viruses running around on Linux (yet)

    c) there just freaking desktops anyways! I backup important stuff!

    d) I format my computer quite often anyways to try out different distros

    e) Entering passwords is ANNOYING, especially for meaningless trivial things like changing the time, adding new wallpapers (into /usr/share/wallpapers, connecting to wireless networks, adding a printer, adding new fonts, loading the control center, and deleting fiiles

Anyways if any newbies are annoyed by passwords I wouldnt worry about it, I know you hear tons of people say things like "but you can DELETE ANYTHING", but guess what you can do that with most OS's out there.... I have yet to mistakenly delete my /

Obviously my servers have passwords that I change monthly, but thats another story. Even the computers that are somewhat public (ie others use them) I use passwords with...

On a related point it would be neat to have a password wizard, which asked the user what he DIDN't want to enter a password for, this way users wouldnt feel the need to remove passwords, which if EVERYONE did it, might encourage virus writers. (I finnally snapped when I changed my time for DST, instead of entering the password I just removed the password).

  16. The very fact that we run Linux on desktops and that e.g. HP ships Mandriva laptops is more than enough proof that Linux is desktop ready. But not every desktop-user is ready for Linux. :D

A statement like that just helps prove it is not desktop ready. Gonna have to come up with something more than that, but....that'd be oftopic, wouldn't it? ...just like the statement itself?
