  1. I have since re-installed Mandrake (new hard drive). My parallel port printer is not connected to the printer at all. My zip drive still refuses to work in Linux. I don't understand, it worked just fine in Mandrake 8.2, as did the parallel port printer, and I didn't do anything special to get them to work. They just did. Why isn't this the case with 9.0?

    Garbled Cracklesound

If you're using the arts sound server, check the slider on the second page. Make sure it's set somewhere in the middle. If it's set too far to the left, crackles can occur. Other than that, I'm not really sure.

    Sound Card Fun!

What was your modules.conf file before? If possible, could you post it?
  4. I'm not really sure how to check that. Although wouldn't they be using the same IRQ anyway since they use the same port? By the way, both devices work just fine in Windows 98SE.
  5. I have a 100 MB Iomega Zip drive connected to the parallel port. It worked just fine in Mandrake 8.2. However, it seems to not want to work in Mandrake 9.0, even though it mounts just fine. Anytime I try to access it, I get an I/O error. In the BIOS, my parallel port is set to ECP+EPP. On a possibly related note, my Xerox DocuPrint C8 printer, which also is connected to the parallel port, which also worked just fine in Mandrake 8.2, now no longer works in 9.0, even though the Control Center detects it and thinks it's working. In summary, neither of my parallel port devices are working. Any ideas? Or do you need more information?
  6. I haven't tried it myself, however, if you want to get kazaa working in wine, you have to install Internet Explorer. You don't have to use Internet Explorer (idiot exploiter....), it just needs to be present for Kazaa to install. If you want further instructions, you can try this page: http://appdb.codeweavers.com

    guitar tuners

Some links to some great audio apps: http://www.linux-sound.org Not all-inclusive, but an excellent resource nonetheless.
  8. You don't have to put it in /usr/src directory. You can just download it to your home directory, and install it from there. It will put needed files where they need to go. You'll just need to provide the root password whenever the program asks for it.
  9. I'm sure it would be even better if the site actually worked.... :P edit: Apparently, my internet connection or my IE browser at work is too impatient. The site is working just fine now.
  10. The browsers Opera and Mozilla both come with pop-up blockers, so you don't need a third-party pop-up blocker. Mozilla: http://www.mozilla.org Opera: http://www.opera.com

    wine on Mandrake 9

It sounds to me like you actually have a bad RPM of Wine. Those files should have been included. I've always found better results just installing from the source tarball of Wine. Just simply go to http://www.winehq.com and download the tar.gz source tarball, uncompress it, type "./tools/wineinstall" and follow the instructions.
  12. Is supermount really so buggy that it is unusable for everyone? I've used Mandrake 8.2 and recently 9.0, have always had supermount on, and I've never had a problem with it. Am I in the minority? I haven't done anything special to make sure it works.
  13. I've always found it better to use the source package (i.e. the tar.gz file) and run ./tools/wineinstall. It will create a wine config file for you. I honestly don't know if wine rpms do that or not.
  14. You could also try, in your desktop link: wine "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeWINWORD.EXE" (although you might also want to try that with the slashes going the other way, too)
  15. Go to http://appdb.codeweavers.com and look up the entry for Internet Explorer 5. There is a HOWTO link on there, and it gives detailed instructions on how to install it.
  16. Did you run configure, make, and make install after downloading it?
  17. I'm using whatever version of KDE came with Mandrake 8.2, which I believe to be 2.2.2 (give or take a 3rd digit decimal number)
  18. I'm trying to compile a program, but every time I try it tells me that it can't find the headers for KDE. It says I don't have KDE installed. Never mind the fact that I try to configure it through a terminal window within KDE..... I tried different directories with the configure script, none of which worked. So I'm hoping somebody can tell me, in what directory should I tell this program is KDE installed? I'm using Mandrake 8.2
  19. Unless I misunderstood your statement..... Most computers can't support two sound cards (or in this case, onboard audio and a separate PCI sound card). Leaving the onboard audio on while having a PCI sound card would cause IRQ conflicts and the end result would be that your sound wouldn't work. So then, you would need to disable the onboard audio so that your PCI sound card only is detected and would work. At least that's how I understand it. If your SB live worked in Windows when you tried it even with onboard audio enabled, then maybe my theory has been disproven..... I still hold the belief that Linux isn't any harder to use or install than Windows, it's just that people have used Windows for so long, that for them to switch to something else would be very difficult at first.
  20. Hopefully, somebody who's used Wine more will be able to help out better. I'm still relatively new to Wine, as well as Linux in general, myself.
  21. The only other thing I can think of is to add another drive to your config file. Try adding this in your drives section: [Drive F] "Path" = "/usr/bin" "Type" = "network" "Label" = "Network" "Filesystem" = "win95" If that doesn't work, replace the Type with "hd" instead of "network" If neither suggestion works, I'm out of ideas.
  22. Let me say that I have very little experience with Linux, as I've only been using it for a couple months. I have not experienced even half of the problems that you speak of. Not to say that it has always been perfect, but it's not as bad as you say. But I think asking for no "teething problems" whatsoever is a bit of an unrealistic goal. Can you honestly say that Windows always installs and works flawlessly? It never has for me. Sometimes I've had to change a setting or two, or 20,000 settings to get something to work the way it's supposed to. I've also had to help others with their Windows problems, too. In short, computers are not perfect. If something doesn't work right and you have to fiddle with it a bit in Linux, what's the big deal whether or not the problem is in Linux or Windows? Some people just don't know how to fix their problem without help. It doesn't matter what the operating system is. (This from your previous post) Just out of curiosity, did you disable the onboard sound before trying to get the separate sound card to work?
  23. I actually meant that to be two separate suggestions. I wasn't meaning for you to make the changes AND re-install Wine. I meant one or the other. Sorry if I was unclear. After re-installation, what's listed as your C drive?
  24. In your home directory, there should be a directory called ".wine". Switch to it, then there should be a file called "config". Either use "cat config" at the console, or open the config file with a text editor. Show me the file and I'll see if I can see the problem.
