  1. Update. The problem is happening intermittently now. Sometimes the movies play fine, other times the video locks. A side note: I don't know if this is connected, but all video files that I put on my computer since this problem began, are represented by the generic "avi" or "mpg" icons in my file manager. All the ones present before the problem are represented by a thumbnail of the clip. Does that make any sense? I'm still pretty confused. Any help would be appreciated.
  2. Video card - Rage 128 UltraTF Sound card - (Not sure. This is what MDK says I have tho) ‎ICH4 845G/GL Chipset AC'97 Audio Controller Using ALSA You might be right about the video being the problem, but as I am still new to Linux, I'm not sure how to test.
  3. Starting to get a little frustrated. I am having a little problem with any media player that I use. It started 2 days ago, and I haven't been able to fix it. Any media player that I use (most recently xine and mplayer) starts to skip after a few seconds. Then It locks up. The video freezes but the sound keeps playing. I'm not real sure how to kill the misbehaving app correctly, so I use the nice little kill process button. After I have done that, the sound no longer works in the media player. All other sound (system and other apps) works fine. The reason I say it's a sound problem is because I have noticed that the videos play without any problem, when the sound is dead. Does anyone have any advice here, or maybe a way to test this. I have 5 more episodes of Naruto (first season) that I would really like to watch :D . Oh yeah, and it also iritates me that I can't tell all my buddies that I'm trying to get switched over, that everything's running fine on my sys. Mod Note:Moved from software by phunni
  4. Another noob here. I am also running MDK10.0 CE. Concern 1. I have never had a problem with a bad shut down. Trust me, it happens a lot in my house, with a wife that is used to Windows, and a 3 year old, who is fascinated with buttons. As a matter of fact, the last time It happened, MDK went thru it's check, and fixed another problem that I was having. Concern 2. I personaly don't like the Idea of automatic updates. With Windows, "here's a group of annonymous "upgrades" that you will take and like it". I prefer looking at individual packages, and reading the description (this also helps me wiith my "noobness"). If you are one of the people who has to use automatic updates, I understand that if you structure your URPMI command correctly, you've got all sorts of flexibility over what gets written or overwritten. You can ask it to keep the old versions of certain things, etc. Concern 3. You're right, in my experience the "plug and play" is not as supported, but that seems more 3rd party problem than MDK. I've had only one problem in this departemt, and the nice people on this board fixed it quick (within 24 hours). Surprisingly enough, I am actually glad I had the problem, because this is another one of those learning experiences that I am using to help others now. Concern 4. True, not as much software out there, but I have yet to find something that can be done in Windows but not be done in Linux. And I don't even use wine or winex. My transition from Windows has been smooth. I actually thought I would have to keep my Windows partition longer. Yesterday, I told my wife to make sure all the doccuments she wanted were off of Windows, because It was gonna be gone by Monday. Some of the other members here who have read some of my post, know that I have recently completed the setup of my FTP server (thru MDK Linux). I had been messing with that for months in Windows. The first step to making the sys more stable might be to get the necessary bug fixes and upgrades. (I did do those in a big lump. So people can call me a hypocrite :D ) But this is just the observations of another complete noob to linux.
  5. Here's what I found [root@kevins kevin]# hdparm /dev/scsi/host4/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 /dev/scsi/host4/bus0/target0/lun0/part1: readonly = 0 (off) geometry = 7476/255/63, sectors = 120085812, start = 63 and [root@kevins kevin]# hdparm /dev/scsi/host4/bus0/target0/lun0/disc /dev/scsi/host4/bus0/target0/lun0/disc: readonly = 0 (off) geometry = 7476/255/63, sectors = 120103200, start = 0 Not sure what DMA is, but it doesn't look like it's enabled.
  6. Something happened between this morning and this evening. I was watching some movies off of my USB HD this morning and decided to leave it on all day (didn't see the harm, as it is essentially an internal drive stuck in a box, right? ) Anyway, I picked up where I left off this evening, and mplayer kept freezing on me. Since I just downloaded Mplayer, I thought that might be the problem. Just to test, I decided to copy one of the movies to the internal drive and try to play it there. That's when I noticed that the transfer between my comp and USB HD was crap. It took 8 minutes just to transfer 180 meg. Anyone have any Idea what's going on? Or maybe even where I could start to work this problem out?
  7. Removed my w32 codecs and replaced with mplayer necessary ones. Downloaded mplayer-gui.rpm and installed. It's pretty nice. As a matter of fact, I think I'm gonna use it as my default and get rid of kaffine/gxine/totem etc. Thanks for your help. BTW - nothing happens when I run rpm -qa | grep w32 What exactly does that do anyway?
  8. Don't know. I assume that they were in that massive update download after I installed MDK 10.0 CE. I'll make a note of their names and then uninstall. I guess if anything stops working, I'll know why.

I'd like to try out mplayer. What are my options here?
  10. I only got 5/10 also. Of course, the first time I touched *nix anything was 3 1/2 months ago. Heck, I still keep a paper list of bash commands next to my keyboard Please don't take one of my penguins
  11. I'm not really sure where I should have put this post - Maybe networking (But it really doesn't go there either) Anyway, I just wanted a little advice on this FTP server that I have set up. (BTW - thanks to all who helped to get it working) Everyting is up and running fine. No problems logging in, downloading or uploading. Since this is the first one of these that I have set up, I don't know what to expect as far as DL and UL speeds. Right now UL is averaging 13kbps. This seems a little slow to me, but, again, I really don't know what to expect. Although, my buddy is averaging 30kbps (he's in Korea, and I understand it's broadband heaven over there) Here's some pert. info.: P4 - 1.8Ghz 256M mem. MDK 10.0 CE ADSL connection (Right now, no firewall or router) Using Proftp, with GProftpd as a frontend I have my max UL and DL speeds set at 45kbps Someone suggested that my provider may cap my UL speed. I haven't contacted them to verify. Does anyone have any comments or suggestions that might help improve the 13kbps? (other than "get a T1")
  12. Weird. My buddy uploads to my comp at 30 Kbps. Thanks for the praise, but fissy deserves it all. I just fiddle till I either break it or it works :D Fissy gave me good instructions/advice. Thanks fissy.
  13. [root@kevins kevin]# gproftpd - getaddrinfo 'Unspecified' error: Name or service not known - getaddrinfo 'Unspecified' error: Name or service not known - error: unable to determine IP address of 'Unspecified' kevins.linux.box.com - getaddrinfo 'Unspecified' error: Name or service not known kevins.linux.box.com - error: unable to determine IP address of 'Unspecified' Aparantly I added a second server in there on accident, with no info. I deleted the offending entry and everything is hunkydory now. Except for that slow up speed. Wander if my ISP has me capped? Do they do that?
  14. Haven't done the above yet, but my buddy was able to log in anyway. But he's only getting about a 13kbps avg. download speed. When He finishes the files that we're working on, I'll fix it like you have suggested.
  15. Ok. Now what does this mean. [root@kevins kevin]# gproftpd - getaddrinfo 'Unspecified' error: Name or service not known - getaddrinfo 'Unspecified' error: Name or service not known - error: unable to determine IP address of 'Unspecified' kevins.linux.box.com - getaddrinfo 'Unspecified' error: Name or service not known kevins.linux.box.com - error: unable to determine IP address of 'Unspecified'
  16. Success. Now for the testing. I appreciate your help. I'll probably be buggin everybody again soon.
  17. [kevin@kevins kevin]$ su Password: [root@kevins kevin]# service proftpd I need an action Usage: /etc/init.d/proftpd {start|stop|status|restart|reload|resume|suspend} suspend accepts additional arguments which are passed to ftpshut(8) [root@kevins kevin]# service proftpd start Starting proftpd: - no such group 'nobody' - Fatal: Group: Unknown group 'nobody'. [FAILED] [root@kevins kevin]# Ok here's what I'm looking at. Does this help?
  18. I must have started it wrong then. I've killed my firewall while setting this up, so that shouldn't be a factor. No router. I'll try to start it with "service" Will post results.
  19. Ok this is my first try at this. I'm trying to set up my Lbox to act as a ftp server. I've got a buddy in Korea and would like to give him access to some files. I've URPMId proftpd and gproftpd. I believe I have set everything up correctly with gproftpd, but can't connect. I've read the proftpd FAQ's and starter guides, but I'm not having any luck. From what I can see, the first thing that you have to do is start proftpd as root, but that's as far as I get. I start it (or at least I think I did) but nothing happens. The FAQ's say that you should be able to start it as a reg user after that, but I'm not. What the heck am I doing wrong? Can someone point me in the right direction please?
  20. I'll have to post that info later, when I"m in front of my Linux machine. The printer was actually working untill I upgraded to 10.0 CE. It carried all of the settings over, except without the "work"part :D . Anyway, when I realized that It wasn't working, I deleted the printer from my printer list. I have still have the Lexmark Z700 option when installing printer, but MDK doesn't recognize my printer on that (or any) USB port. Even when I manualy set the printer up and direct it to the right USB port. I'll take a look as the settings a little later and post them here.
  21. I'm considering bringing my epson home from the office, and taking the Lexmark to work (MS comps). I guess that'll be the easiest fix. I hate that because I print so much at work. While I can find epson print cartridges for $4 each, the cheapest Lexmark cartridges that I can find are $32. Oh well, I really need my home comp to print. Guess I'll have to suck it up or go buy another epson.
  22. Since I download a lot, and I dual boot (for now) I keep psi disk space monitor on my desktop (thru Gdesklets). If it is something that you check regularly, like me, a monitor might be usefull. There are several to choose from.
  23. Ok, I've seen plenty of Lexmark threads floating around the board, but I haven't seen any Z705 ones yet, so here it is. Actually, I had this printer working in MDK 9.2 but with my upgrade to 10.0 CE it is dead again. It still appears on my printer list, but MDK won't auto detect it, and if I manually configure it, it still doesn't work. I've looked around for maybe an upgraded driver, but can't find one. If anyone has any input on this, I'd really appreciate it.
  24. Started out with Totem, but didn't like it. Not sure why, It just didn't click for me. Gowator, I'm not finding a gmplayer package. I just updated my sources also. Guess i'll look for the site and find the rpm, unless you know where I can get it right off hand. [EDIT} It appears that I could not start mplayer, because the instal failed. It's looking to download w32codec-0.52-1, but fails everytime. I guess I'll just stick with gxine. Kinda ugly, but it does the job. :D (Actually my wife says that about me on occasion )
  25. Thanks, I'll give it a shot when I get home. I downloaded gxine earlier and I started/restarted the player 25 times with no problems. I guess it must have been a GUI bug. Actually, I kinda like the gxine player. I'll give Mplayer a shot and probably choose between the two. One negative for gxine - I can't figure out how to make it look a little prettier. Can it be skinned or themed?
