That's nice. But even though XPlite is not free it's worth it's price, at least while I keep windows, hopefully not for much longer. Ix, I had to defrag XP twice to get that data at the end of the partition to another place. I left 2.4 Gb of free space for Windows and gave the rest to Linux. Windows uses a swap FILE not a swap partition, and that's what makes life difficult.

This should be in the Tips and tricks section, so just wondering, what programs can "strip" Windows XP into a barebone installation, but still secure (well...relatively) so that Linux can get more HD space? I know I can google on this but I'd like some user experience with this stuff...like what gets cut out, etc...
  3. Are you sure it's not detected? go through your 'dmesg'...okay, post it of you still can't see what's wrong. I know linux supports that card, at least in 2.6. what kernel are you using?
  4. Internet Exploder...that's funny, I think I'll start calling it that... :D
  5. :D You might want to start your own company, and blow them awaY! M$ is costing the world billions in lost productivity and lack of competition. Have you been to google recently? when I see "powerpoint presentation" or "word document" containing the info I'm looking for, I say, "oh crap..."
  6. How do I kill thee? Let me count the ways... one more, if X acts up, use (as root of course) "init 3" or "init 6" if you're still in that Windows "reboot mentality". :D
  7. I'll post back when I teach a monkey to click and install. wait, that's already been done! how about a pig? ^_^
  8. In one website I made, I put hand-coded html on most of it, and some VBscript and Javascript...and one, just one page saved from MS Word. The page was as big as the entire site(excluding pictures) , and it wasn't such a small site either. Like the html code from MS Word Gowator posted previously, there was so much trash I couldn't get rid of. Many people sing praises for OOo because it can do .doc files, but the fact is .doc sucks. I'd like to see a campaign to promote open standards like the XML-based ones, and I think it can be done in spite of M$ - just look at PDF, it's hugely popular though MS has yet to include native support for it. MS Office works. That's all, it's popular because M$ killed the competition. Corel and Lotus are barely alive even though they made good apps...I was using WordPerfect when it was still in DOS, and even at that time I could see that it was good.
  9. fuzzylizard, In setup 2 the XP box is behind the Linux box, which is the gateway and can act as DMZ. But some people, with good reason, won't link the XP box directly to the internet like in setup 1. Although the router may have a good firewall... But in my experience I don't know the details of the router firewall and how to manage it (I'm a control freak) and sometimes bad stuff does get through, to XP i mean. Feel free to correct (and educate) me on the router firewall...just my 2 cents. :D
  10. But I'd point out in setup 1 the computers can connect to the internet separately. (I mean, when one computer is turned off, the other can still surf) setup 2 can't do that. Setup 1 is also less secure since there's no "gateway" computer. It really depends on how you want to use it. Both can do the internet sharing and file sharing, so what else are your criteria?
  11. Powerpoint?? NO! It's driven presentations and speeches(business, academic, scientific, anything) into the lowest intellectual level imaginable. (the "My dog can do that" level) Many presentations nowadays lack real content - powerpoint puts misplaced authority in the minds of the viewers...a nut case suddenly sounds authoritative...people listen to crap, because it's on powerpoint. I got a digital camera just to avoid putting those annoying and instantly recognizable Clip Art. I'll post back, I gotta search for that anti-powerpoint website and post a link here. EDIT: actually the misplaced authority comes from legitimate presentations using powerpoint well, but people find it hard to identify a good powerpoint presentation from a bad one, hence the "viral" effect. I suggest if you're any good, don't use powerpoint. Don't do boring sequential presentations - jump around and force your audience to listen and participate. That's what presentations are for. You might as well just give them a "movie" if you don't want them to participate.
  12. thanks! I got nothing on this board's search function, I should've taken the trouble to google it :D lazy me...
  13. I'm also looking for the answer...but in MCC sometimes the profile change is not that smooth. Anyway it's very time-consuming... *bump* this thread. any gurus out there who can help us?
  14. I know 50-year-olds playing a lot... more than me, a teenager. :o Game addiction is becoming a big problem here, with an entire generation of kids raised on them. I play, a good amount, but addiction? no. I agree with DOlson on another thread, PC gaming is better off dead. (Consoles are another matter)
  15. /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera vfat user,rw,noauto,suid,umask=0 0 0 If you're not sure of an option just leave it out. With this in the fstab you just type "mount /dev/sda1" in console and an icon pops on the desktop, then "umount /dev/sda1" makes it disappear. If it doesn't, right click on the desktop and configure the desktop icons to show it when it's mounted.
  16. OS X is not just "friendly". It's down to the level of "my dog can do that" -_- Most OS's seem headed that way, but at least Linux offers you choice. USB adsl modems are a nightmare in Linux...one reason why I still have a windows box, though hopefully not for much longer.
  17. I hate Lycoris but I'd recommend it to "average" computer users (why, in this world, is average=IGNORANT?) Borders has good Linux books...so I hang out there the whole day, jotting on napkins (ashamed to say I can't afford them :( ) sorry, I'd better move to the "rant" section...
  18. Try using a different WM...or is it you can't boot at all?
  19. That's easy...go to Mandrake Control Center>> boot then specify the default as the 2.6 Or you can edit /etc/lilo.conf and set the default from there, the syntax is pretty self explanantory. Last step go to console, su to root, then type 'lilo'. The default will be specified by an asterisk so you know if you successfully changed it. Finally, type "reboot". If you want to change the order then just cut and paste lilo.conf in the correct order. :D Deleting the old kernel is more tricky, find the vmlinuz and initrd image then remove them. But do this very carefully. Or you can try through the "Remove software" part. I congratulate you on solving your problem. B)
  20. Here's something... I notice your Inspiron has Celeron...or is that a Centrino? Some motherboards can use both APM and ACPI, but kernel 2.4 has a bug with ACPI. You might be able to switch to APM, but my boxes only have APM and no ACPI so I don't know how to do that. Anyway ACPI would only be useful in 'true' laptops, not those tethered all the time. Or you can try to install the 2.6 kernel...it's pretty easy really. *Yawn* I better get some sleep...
  21. I should make it a habit to read the post thoroughly. That's the second time I got embarassed. :woops: I suggest go to Software Media Manager under menu>>configuration>>packaging then add this link as a FTP source. Then go to "Install Software" and search for Klaptop (be sure to search from all packages). Assuming, of course, that this KDE module doesn't need to be compiled in or anything. I'm no expert on that. There's also a section on installing the 2.6 kernel in the Tips and Tricks section, you might want to try that. It's said to be much better with acpi, which gives a lot of headaches (try searching "power management" or similar terms and you'll see what I mean). I really, really hope I could help you more but I have had no access to a Linux box for the whole weekend. I need my Linux fix...
  22. Just click the "code" button on top in the reply screen. I think changing the 0 to a 1 would work for the SysRq sequence, and remove the #. However, it won't solve the underlying problem. I don't understand why your laptop won't shut down, but take a look at the BIOS and look in power management. Are you using ACPI or APM for power management? Also go to menu>>configuration >> KDE >> power management and see what it tells you. I keep hearing that the 2.6 kernel has better acpi support, but haven't tried it yet, so other members please feel free to comment on this. Also, I don't have access to a Linux box right now (I'm posting with M$ IE) :o all this is from memory, so pardon my lack of exactness.
  23. uh...stupid me. The thing you posted was only the kernel version (but most common on 9.2) . But you could've used a 2.4 kernel with a early version of mandrake, right? ehe... :woops: Anyway there are 7 levels, runlevels 1-5 then 0 and 6 are halt and reboot respectively. The link I posted should help you move between them. I'll try not to overload you with info, as there are many ways to do these. Did my advice work?
  24. I presume you're using mandrake, but what version? Anyway, try going to Konsole (menu >> terminals >> konsole) and type 'poweroff'. DON'T do that pressing of powerbutton for >3 seconds, it's a cold shutdown and NOT recommended. Try <ctrl><alt><backspace> instead or what I said above. This thread tells you more. Please report dead links.

    NIC or switch

We all just posted minutes apart  Are you sure about your purchase? I still recommend a router, unless it's too expensive.
