  1. I've also had problems with menus. I found that a menu entry that has only one entry (like in games I add prboom to the adventure submenu) it moves that single item up to the next menu level and deletes the sub menu (Instead of seeing games-> adventure -> prboom I only see games -> prboom). And I move my whole games directory on it's own and if I make changes later the games directory reappears in the more applications menu. Even though my change is still there. One of the annoyances that went into my decision to go back to 10.0.
  2. You are probably thinking of burning right from one cd in one drive to another in the burner drive. Most linux programs won't do this well for some reason. Anyway. It's best to make an image and burn that anyhow to avoid buffer underruns.
  3. What's the matter with using GIMP? I have a usb flash card reader that I use to read the cards I put in my HP PhotoSmart camera. Then I use GIMP to edit them.
  4. He prob means 2006 download edition.

    CD Music

John, That is one of the reasons I had switched back to my rock solid 10.0 install. For me KSCD was cutting off the first few seconds of all songs. Don't know why. But I found that Grip worked fine as a cd player. And it was working fine for ripping also. I read a post at Linuxquestions that there have been lots of bug reports on kscd for recent releases, especially in Mandriva.
  6. No all sndconfig is is to setup isa sound cards. Alsactl sets my sound card to load the default sound settings. Problem was that the old sound settings were interfering. I deleted the .aumixrc file in /etc and all seems to be well now.
  7. I disabled the onboard sound on my mother board and installed my old pci sound blaster. It has better sound quality and the sound inputs are better. I get feedback on the onboard sound. But now I've come into a little hang up. Since setting up the card (it works fine by the way) my sound settings keep reverting to a default setting. I've set the root sound volume to a certain setting but when I log out and turn off the computer and come back my sound settings are reset to the default. I've gone into my .kde directory and deleted the .kmixrc and .kmixctl files so they will reset to the root settings. But I thing there is another setting somewhere switching it back. I've installed awemix also to try to fix it and no help. Otherwise the sound is fine but I'd like not to have to keep resetting my sound settings. (Oh, it's good old 10.0)
  8. I only worry with cdrw's. They tend to wear out too quickly. And with the price of cd-r's so low I just stick with them. Only thing I worry about it my music collection. I've transferred my old lp's to cd and hope they have staying power as turntables become harder and harder to find.
  9. I went to http://rmp.pbone.net and did a search for firefox. Then I downloaded the suse 9.3 rpm for firefox 1.5. Works fine. You'll just have to manually make the menu entry with menudrake.
  10. OK for anyone else looking for rpms. I have Firefox 1.5 and Thunderbird 1.0.7 installed and working fine. I only had to manually make menu entries for them. And I had to edit the prefs.js file for Thunderbird to use Firefox as a browser for links clicked on in messages. The answer can be found on Linuxquestions. org by doing a search for "thunderbird browser". These were two major updates I needed to be satisfied with my "old" 10.0 install. We'll see how next year's release comes out. Or maybe the 2006.1 when it's final. But for now 10.0 is rock solid. And updated.
  11. OK. Now here's the problem and the reason why I was looking for rpms. I've got Firefox 1.5 installed. I tinkered with it and it now works fine like it should. BUT......Now clicking on links in Thunderbird won't open a browser. This is why I wanted an rpm. Having it integrate with the system. When you just setup the binary it doesn't integrate. Even with an installer would be better. But this is an unzip and go install. Not ideal. See for this I wan't to go back to my 1.0.4 rpms. At least they integrated.
  12. John. I didn't try 2005 only because I have a rock solid 10.0 setup. I tried 10.1 and had the usb probs (remember that) so I went back to 10.0. I was thinking of trying 2005 but from what I read it seemed it only came on 3 cds. So it wouldn't have included all the goodies I wanted. I was waiting for 2006 so I could get the powerpack. Not just the download version. I think about looking into 2005 but I might just wait for 2007 to come out. I should have waited more on reviews of 2006 to see these problems. I usually do. Anyway holidays tapped my mad money so no choice now any how. Maybe in Feb I'll look at 2005 or download it at work. Oh but I've found that there ARE progs I can move down to 10.0 from 2006. Specifically cd 3. I can use all the progs there. All the adobe stuff, macromedia flash, and the like. Scarecrow. Per mozilla's instructions, 1.5 doesn't have an installer. You download the tar.gz file. Then untar it into the directory you want. You can link the shell script but why when I can run it right from the original shell script. And there's no info anywhere about the chrome dir. I get messages saying can't install due to problems with the chrome dir when I first run it. Mozilla's site makes mentions of permission problems with the file in extensions but no the actual chrome dir. I only put actual binaries into bin. And honestly 10.0 isn't archaic. I mean aside from the way it handles devices like inserted cd's and usb devices (and the fact it doesn't setup my printer right from install but have to do it after) I have no operational differences. The software might be older but it works and I don't have the bugs or kinks. And I don't have to tinker with it as much as I had 2006 to get it to work right. Fix the kdm login theme issue, remove kat, deal with xorg not working good 3d accell. And I didn't like how menu subdirs that held only one item got moved up to the next level. So if I moved cd burning to the main menu and it only held k3b it didn't show the cd burning sub menu with k3b in it only k3b by itself on the main menu. And there's no way to fix it. Then again there was supposed to be a performance improvement. Didn't see it. It booted slightly faster but in a tradeoff programs take slightly longer to load. And /usr/lib is not an unusual place, it holds all the program directories.
  13. OK looks like I got 1.5 going. But I had to take a few different steps. 1. Downloaded the 1.5 tar.gz file from Mozilla 2. Untarred the directory as user to my user directory 3. opened Konqueror in superuser mode and copied the entire new firefox directory to my /usr/lib directory 4. (This is the step no one has mentioned before) I used konqueror in the super user mode to change the permissions on the /usr/lib/firefox/chrome directory (and all contents in that directory) to allow users to write to that directory (I add all my users to the disk directory so I changed group ownership of that directory to disk) 5 two different ways: I first put a link on my desktop to the firefox shell script and I created a menu entry for the firefox directory both work. I'm in it now. Still would like an rpm also but I can manage. Now my old 10.0 install is updated enough to my liking.
  14. I did follow the firefox instructions. I dont' want it setup as user. I wanted to set it up for all users. But I read about the problems with installing it to a directory that a user doesn't have write permissions to. And 10.0 didn't include firefox. I got the 1.0.4 rmps from norlug. Until 2005 le the default browser was Mozilla proper. I'll look at it again but I'm not holding out hope. The thing I liked about 10.0 was how it "just worked" right from install. Aside from setting up samba and my printer and rearranging my menu there wasn't much tweaking that needed to be done. There just seem to bee too many catches with 2006. I guess I can deal with slightly older software. Heck I was using Debian Woody for a while so that's nothing new.
  15. I'm not a 100% pleased with 2006 as I was when 10.0 came out. I haven't upgraded my old laptop or my backup computer since 10.0 works better on them and 2006 is a memory hog. I've still got 2006 on the main computer (for now) But seriously considering regressing to 10.0. Now I got rpms for Firefox 1.0.4 from Norlug but they now have Redhat rpms instead of Mandrake/Mandriva rpms. And can't find rpms for Firefox on PLF. So does anyone have any other locations to get rpms for Firefox 1.0.7. Also I've downloaded FF 1.5 from the mozilla site. I have trouble getting to run it as user. Root is fine but don't go online with root. So for the laptop and backup computer I'm looking to find 1.0.7 rpms. RPMFIND also isn't any help. It's an even run almost with downsides for running either 10.0 or 2006 for me. 10.0 has older software and usb devices aren't handled to my liking in kde 3.2. But my 3d acceleration works a heck of a lot better and Gimp isn't a stinker. But OOo is also older. 2006 has newer packages. Firefox is more upto date. Usb devices work better. But 3d sucks and it is more a resource hog than 10.0. And I can't use my old routine of pulling certain packages from one distro and using them in another. I could get away with it with older distros but 2006 is too changed. Can't use 10.0 rpms in 2006 and can't force 2006 rpms into 10.0. I was hoping to use the firefox and thunderbird rpms from 2006 in 10.0 but the dependencies are unresolvable when it hits freetype2. so really need rpms for 1.0.7 if anyone knows where to find them.
  16. Oh I always install clean. There really shouldn't be a reason for this to happen but it does. They are off cd's purchased from Cheapbytes. It's wierd since the pic will open in any viewer fine. But once I saved it in 1.2 it was ok.
  17. I've used Gimp to edit my photos for posting them on my website. Well today was the first time since I installed 2006 that I've had to edit new photos for the site. So I popped out my cf card from the camera and plugged it into the lexar card reader. No probs. Still love how 2006 handles usb devices now. Well I tried my usual routine. i tried to open the pic directly from the cf card into Gimp. Well Gimp would load but it wouldn't open the pic. I tried a few different times. I even removed and reinstalled Gimp. No go. So I copied that file and the others (this year's family holiday photos) to my pics directory. Again I tried to open that file. No go. Now I tried to open a couple of the other pics and it opened them and I was able to edit them. No prob. But nothing I did would open that pic. I even tried starting Gimp and then opening the file (I was right clicking on the photo in Konqueror and trying to open it that way first) So I took that pic and put it on the cf card again. Fired up the laptop, that still has 10.0 loaded on it. Opened up Gimp 1.2 and sure enough it opened that file. I made my changes and it saved the pic back. So I go back into 2006 open Gimp and sure enough I was able to open the pic now. I won't even guess as to what the problem is but I almost want to get 1.2 reinstalled into 2006 now since 2.2 has this problem. If the jpg has any problems it won't open though in 1.2 it will. Oh, before trying to open it in gimp I previewed all the photos in Kwickview first with no problems so the original would read.
  18. Well I changed my driver from the default xorg r128 driver to the dkms-ati driver included with the powerpack. At least now my opengl screensavers show on the full screen now. But performance is still poor. Chromium still works like it does on my old 400mhz machine. And with 10.0 it was good. And Solar Winds screensaver worked nice. Now it is dog slow. At least I found the other screensaver package to get pyro back.
  19. Oh, come on. You can't tell me NO ONE has come upon this problem before? Well I'm giving 2006 one last chance. It was a crash problem from a power out that caused this so I won't blame 2006, this time. But I am a little disappointed. I once asked if anyone knew what happened to all Mandrake/mandriva's screen savers. It seemed there were fewer and fewer with each release. Well during my reinstall I found the package that has the missing kde screensavers. They used to be a default install. I found them by chance this time. Since the openGL screensavers still only show on the top 1/2 of my screen I wanted some other options. No one here has found the kdemultimedia-artwork-screensavers package? Well the reinstall went fine. And my system is back to normal with sounds. And I've got my choice of screensavers again. It would have been nice though to at least hear someone say that was what was needed.
  20. I had trouble with a couple things. One I fixed, OpenOffice stopped working. A quick reinstall fixed that. And my typing was slowed. I think it was that weird fast key thing. Don't know. Well I deleted my .kde directory and reset KDE. Typing is back. But I've noticed the system no longer recognizes my .wav files. I have a bunch of my own .wav files in /usr/share/sounds that I like to use. They are still there. However, when I bring up kde configuration and attempt to change my system notifications it does not show any of the .wav files. I checked my other users also who hadn't been logged on and it's the same. The sounds they had set before still work but it won't let you select .wav files. Even selecting the wave audio files tab in file selection won't show the .wav files. But the .wav files are there and they play if you click on them in konqueror. I'm at a loss with this one.
  21. I've read a few places where people have had similar experiences. I've got 2006 setup and working reasonably good. But I am afflicted with poorer openGL performance than in 10.0. This is the only hangup I have yet to work out in my 2006 install. glxgears shows I can get about 825 fps. This is comparable with my 10.0 install. However, now Chromium is dog slow. Unusable. It was descent in 10.0. Tuxracer won't even work in 2006, granted trying to use an rpm from 10.0 and 10.1. On a side note I am disappointed to see more and more of my favorite screensavers disappear with each subsequent release. I liked the old Pyro. It's gone. Then liked Solar wind. Thats gone too now. So I tried fireworks. Looks nice but here's my problem. The screensaver only appears in the upper 1/2 or less of the screen. And it's not just the one screensaver. I downloaded tuxsaver from kdelook.org. It loaded fine and works but performance is the same. Only the top portion of the screen. I've looked about updating my ati card's driver. However, my card is an older Rage 128. The newer drivers are only for the Radeon and higher. So it looks like I'm out of luck on that route. So any other ideas what to look for?
  22. Well so far so good. Since removing kat and clamav my system performance is back to good and no more lockups. Now have to look into those minor annoyances. I'm not worried about kscd but chormium performance is terrible. My 3d is still sub par to 10.0. Will definitely look into the update when it comes out.
  23. OK here's the latest. I've got 10.0 back in the system for now. I've got a spare partition that I used for storage. I emptied it and used it to do a test install of 2006 again. Thi s time one of the first things was to remove kat from the install (actually during the install). I've noticed a definite increase in system performance. And I've not run into the problem of kde locking up after sitting. Now I still have the problem with music in prboom. And kscd still cuts off the first couple seconds of songs. I can get around kscd by using grip instead. And prboom. Well I can deal without music. Now I see that nvu might actually solve my need for mozilla. I'm going to look into it. But I need to see how wine performs first. I have to install it and give it a shot. If wine's performance is improved I'm going to attempt putting 2006 back on the main drive. We'll see. Also to free up resources I'm going to remove clamav. If I feel I need it and it doesn't make much difference I might put it back later. So going now to get wine up and running. Also I've got the powerpack and I'm going to try the updated ati driver it has provided. Going to look into that one. Anyway I'll update after that.
  24. Michael, I thought that to and I disabled KAT altogether. It might be nice for some but it's unnecessary for me. But System Guard, it will work fine when the system is fine but when it gets stuck that's what reads. And then when I ctrl-alt-backspace and the system comes back up it works fine. Scarecrow. I heard that composer was also going to be spun off. SO this is it? if so I'm going to get that either from my 2006 rpms or download it. Mark I'm picky. My system has to work just right. I'll try new systems but if it isn't to my liking I revert. Did it with 9.0. Went back to 8.2. Did it with 8.1. Went back to 8.0. Did it with 10.1, went back to 10.0. And doing it again. now if they fix the slowdown problem and the xorg problem I might try it again. But if not I'll wait for 2007. I'll just keep upgrading my programs instead of the system.
  25. Yep. Arctic, I live by that rule. Artee. I've read up on it and checked the erata page. Mine is a similar problem but it's not actually related to the acpi. It isn't activated in my system. And there's no entry to remove from logrotate. But yes my system load is high. And if I let it sit for a while and I open System Guard the memory usage is all 888888888. Actually everything is. cpu load, memory usage. I check it in 10.0 and it's never anywhere near this. It only took 3 hours to get my 10.0 system set back up. I wasn't able to use hardly anything out of 2006, except acrobat, the java runtime and flash player. But for all that was not working the only thing now I have to keep an eye on is how I plug in my usb items. As long as I close whatever program is using it first there's no problem. My system speed is back and my 3d accell is fine. my screensaver works good again and tux racer is usable (a good test). I might download the updates and try it on the backup computer again but for now 2006 isn't stable enough. But if they can fix these problems I can hold out hope.
