I don't know if you guys at Mandriva considered this (it seems a bit obvious to me), but couldn't this issue be easily avoided if, when doing an upgrade like this (or heck, even a big update - say a new DE version), Mandriva would crap out if any files don't get downloaded? Maybe give the user some feedback and a question on whether or not to continue? Or does it already do that and this is another issue?if the mirror used for the upgrade is overly busy (resulting in some packages not being downloadable and hence a partial upgrade).(don't mean to offend - if it works this way, or if you guys already thought about it, my bad! :) )

as an FYI, you can use this method with the iso on an internal disk also - simply point grub to the right place. Of course, you will need to be sure not to format the partition that the iso is on.
-
seems to me this might be useful. though, i'm not sure how you would reference the iso if it were on a Windows drive (or if you can - not sure grub can read NTFS). This will work for you silver. ilia, you could try making a small temp ext2 partition (i think there are free windows tools for this) to hold the dvd iso for installation - that's just one idea.
(also, steve uses an external drive, but you can use an internal as long as you don't format that partition)

OS X native, nice!

Verizon FiOS ranges from $42/mo. (10Mbps) to $140 (50Mbps). I'm currently paying $42/mo. for cable internet (12Mbps) - so prices are similar here. Unfortunately FiOS isn't available in my apartment complex. It can be an amazing technology and it can bring amazing speed but how much does it cost?
I don't care how many wires, but only having one bill (not to mention possible discounts of you combine all 3) is certainly nice.To get 1 wire for TV, phone, internet etc ? Truth is I don't care how many wires they use to get me those services. -
I would look at KDE4 as the culprit here. I noticed, even on my fairly beefed system (NVIDIA 8800GTX 768MB RAM vid card) KDE4 + 3d desktop = slowness. KDE3 or GNOME, no problem.3D desktop doesn't work as smoothly anymore, and having a VLC video open while scrolling through a webpage on firefox slows the system down considerably).
Again, KDE4 issues.Other complaints include a lack of customization (can't change the color of my panel) and that some widgets screw up the proportion of my icons....
You probably just need to set up the keys. I forget what the tool for this is in Mandriva, but there should be something in the Control Center. Also, not all the buttons on my keyboard are mapped correctly - volume control no longer works!
I believe with 3d desktops it's less about memory and more about GPU power. Upgrading your vid card (I would go with an nvidia) might improve perfomance, but as noted, I experience slowdown even with a decent vid card - again, I'd put the blame on the maturity of KDE4. It's functional and they have a lot of the pieces there, but it still could use some optimization and general polish.Would an upgraded 256MB video card help smooth out some of the 3D desktop issues? -
how about the output of lsmod?
in terminal, aumix is probably a better option than kmix. kmix may not be installed if you didn't select kde stuff (since you're using gnome).

I guess it's like any new tech, takes a while for the hype to pass before we start hearing the real facts. thanks for the info/link adam :)

In the U.S., some phone providers are starting to run fibre (Verizon has it's FiOS, for example) to the house - they use it not only for internet, but also for phone (it's a way to get into the VOIP market) and TV (to take on the big cable companies). Basically, telephone companies and cable companies are swallowing services whole (sorry, that was a bit of a tangent).

at console prompt:
cd /home/william/Documents
insert the USB drive. you may need to manually mount it, so you'll have to know what /dev/sdXX it is. fdisk -l should help as ian suggested.
then simply copy the files, i.e.:
cp /home/william/Documents/*.odt /path/to/pendrive/

i know this reply is a bit late, but that's a pretty generic error. could be caused by anything from bad permissions to...well, several other things.

the 3g network might be compacting your downloads, so the sig may not match. that's just a guess, however - it's possible the 3g just has data corruption issues (not usually noticeable in normal browsing, but when downloading binary files - yeah).
-
add the NFS share to /etc/fstab and set your UID and GUID in there. be sure to use the noauto option, so it doesn't try to mount it on boot (before the network is up).

will grab this tonight. would be cool if it picked up my bluetooth keyboard for the install :D (no points docked if it doesn't, though).

That's unfortunate. Isn't speed supposed to be a pro for solid state? Or is it just a bad drive choice (i.e. this specific model bites)? It's slower than a regular hard disk in most ways. -
I don't think anyone makes a list of that. Chances are, from the last beta, not much has changed (usually last beta becomes release - may be a few small fixes, though).that's since the last stable, I meant from last beta (the driver I am currently using) -
I imagine "Linpus Lite" has been thoroughly optimized for the hardware. though the spec's don't seem to be anything most linux distro's couldn't run well on.

I'm going to bet you can safely delete the files in /usr/share/doc/clamav/test - probably even the whole test directory. No more false-positives :) (and clamav should continue to function).

Sorry, I'm not psychic, and when I see excessive question punctuation and bold letters I assume "upset mode" (it's similar to ALL CAPS). As do many people on the internet, so perhaps it'd behoove us all to be a little more clear in our "mode".I don't think that John was upset when he wrote that. It can be read in two ways. "Upset-mode" and one "slightly-puzzled-mode". JMHO. :)
Right. I've been posting like that since long before you joined this board. And the community grew then.Thyme's response is typical as to what is causing so many members leaving MUB.(and it's tyme, not thyme, dang it :P )

It might be to your benefit to calm down a little bit before responding next time. So he didn't understand what you meant, chill out.Did I say tool bar ???. No I did not. I said Title Bar. Right at the very top.I can't make it any clearer than that.

Wow, that stuff is pretty outdated.

compiz is a combination of functionality and eye candy. yes, you could have all the same functionality without a lot of the cool 3d effects (windows flying around, wobbling, etc.) but it's a nice addition to some pretty useful things. it takes a while to change your mental paradigm of working with one desktop and no effects to working with multiple desktops and lots of effects. at first, it seems useless, and a lot of people just stop using the features. i forced myself to use compiz's features and found it increases my productivity - specifically when working on websites. with file transfers, image editing, html/php coding, and my standard im/irc/web browsing going on, having several desktops and some of the effects is advantageous. I have a lot of windows open: with features such as the "expose" of compiz, multiple desktops (with programs separated by task), and various other things included in compiz, i find my productivity goes up because i spend less time trying to find the window i want and more time actually working on the project at hand.

There is a setting for this, however, I can't be sure where it is in Mandriva's setup. Look into Window Effects, or similar, there should be a setting for menu bar or drop-down. Hopefully someone with access to a 2008 box can let you know exactly where this setting is.
