  1. More information please. Does your realtek card hook up to a router/adsl modem??? If so, what type is it?? The chances are that you can do what you want to but you hav'nt made it very clear. As far as I know, you need to plug the Realtek 8129 into a router or modem of some kind before you can access the net. If so, what do you have?
  2. Thanks Dragonmage I'll give it a go.
  3. I have the same problem, but Kmail doesn't even check on startup. I can't get it to send or check emails. It just sits there and does nuthin!
  4. I have just installed a repaired printer a Epson Colour Stylus 850. It prints OK with letters or writing of any kind, but tonight I tried to print a photo from Gimp and all I got pages and pages of numbers, letters and basic gobbledegook!!! There seems so many ways of setting up the printer in mdk 10 I am getting confused. You can use Hardware Drake, Webmin, or KDE. Do they work in parallel with eachother or are they totally disconnected with eachother? I have it set up using the Cups driver in Hardware Drake. In Kde Printer config it says that it uses the Cups driver too but also the S. co. 850 Gimp-print-ijs under driver Settings in KDE. It's all confusing but the bottom line is I want to be able to print photos from a printer that is well designed to do just that. Can anyone steer me into some type of clear direction?? Thanks
  5. So your opinions are mostly based around speed being the biggest benefit from this compilation, yet the speed difference is so minimal that it doesn't really matter. Right?? What about stability?? Does this exercise add stability or not?? Or is it really a waste of time and effort? AND as a virtual newbie to Mandrake (1 year now) I am annoyed that you always are having to download and upgrade again every two months or so. I think that this is a poor way of keeping up to date. I know very little about "portal" but maybe Mandrake needs to look into it?
  6. Has anyone tried the process of recompiling source RPMs to specifically suit your computers hardware and processor?????? It's called "Mandrake a la Gentoo" and a pdf file of instructions can be found here, http://cybercfo.gkmweb.com/mandrake_a_la_gentoo-9.2.pdf I have used the idea now for the past 4 months or so when possible, instead of installing the RPM, I download the source RPM and reconfigure it to produce all the RPM's needed for my specific computer. I have had no problems with the actual process and my computer is very stable. I am only now in the process of completely reconfiguring XFree86, qt3, and Kde. Do any of you old timers or Xperts know if it is worth the extra effort or not?? For me, (a learning newbie) it's philosophy makes sense and so far it has worked really well. I for one, am interested in your opinions.
  7. I agree with Arctic. It does sound like a ram problem. You can download a ram tester which will show if you have a problem with your ram. It's called Simmtester. It can be downloaded from www.simmtester.com You'll just have to read a bit to use it. If you have any hassles, like they have stopped free downloads, PM me and I'll email it to you.
  8. Sorry about the numbers. I have a terrible memory for numbers.
  9. Firstly, you need to go to "Mandrake Control Centre" then choose "Software Management" and then "Media Manager" Untick CD4 and and press OK and shut the lot down. Then, have you updated your urpmi mirror database?? (where Mandrake downloads programs and updates from) If you have, just retype in the original command and instead of asking you for CD4 it will download it from the proper mirror. If you hav'nt, go to plf.zarb.org and select "easyurpmi" There, you select the version of Mandrake you are using and the different mirrors that you want to download from into the future, usually the ones that are closest to you geographically. Follow the instructions, and from there you should be right once your database has been substansiated.

  11. Hi guppeto Out of interest I tried burning a heap of mp3 and ogg files that I have been meaning to burn for ages using K3b. I had NO PROBLEMS!! Do you have the proper plugins for K3b installed?? this is just a guess on my part, but you need the audio plugins so K3b can convert the mp3 or ogg files for burning. I hope that this may help.
  12. Hi, I am wondering if I have to download 3 more CD's for Mandrake 10.2 or can I do it via easyurpmi? I am running Mandrake Official with the latest updates and I am a Mandrake Club member (if that matters) thanks
  13. Thanks mate, A bit of fiddling around with those settings has fixed it. thanks a lot!
  14. It could be related to your resolv.conf file and/or your /etc/hosts file With my computer as soon as I set up my network for the first time KDE takes forever to load programs. If I change the /etc/hosts file to the correct DNS numbers it causes programs to open immediately. If my DNS number is 192.168.0.7 the /etc/hosts file should look like this..... EX: 127.0.0.1 localhost 192.168.0.7 (my computers name on the network) The /etc/resolv.conf should be setup with the numbers of your ISP Providor, for ex nameserver 205.15.254.240 (or whatever your ISP numbers are) Get these two files right and the speed difference is incredibly different!
  15. Hey Thanks From Me tooooooooo This is the first time I have been able to see anything streaming in Firefox too. However, can anyone help me with why the audio sounds like chipmunks during the live streaming???? I'm not sure if the video is fast or not yet but the audio is straight out of Chipmunkville "After you......" "Oh no, I insist after you.... "
  16. Ahh I'm not sure as I don't know too much about xml. It does seem to have to end in a picture file extension to work though like .jpg or .gif It won't download a html file for instance. Thanks for the idea anyway
  17. This has been an interesting thread. I recently updated my system via drak control centre and downloaded nearly 500 meg of updates. And if I go now to check it says that the list is empty meaning that my system is up to date!! BUT, if I follow your commands via the terminal, "urpmi --auto-select " it shows that there is another 530meg of updates that I need to install. Is the terminal more accurate than the Control Centre or what????? Thanks for any replies
  18. Hi I am accessing a Satellite weather picture which updates twice daily. The photo that I am after changes it's name as the date changes though. For instance yesterdays would be called 070804.jpg Todays is called 080804.jpg (Australias dating system) Tomorrows would be 090804.jpg Is there anyway of setting up Gkrellkam to automatically download a picture from this site daily via a script or something?? Or for that matter can a script be written to change the config file that Gkrellm accesses?? Thanks for any help Peppercorn
  19. Hi everyone!!! I am having hassles listening to different formats of sound because eveything seems sped up to some degree. A normal mp3 seems about 4% too fast, I know this because I've experimented with Audacity to test it and 4% is about right. However, if I listen to any live streaming via the real player it sounds like chipmunks!! I am using Mandrake 10 with the 2.6.3-15 kernel with a Hoontech soundcard using the ice 1712 driver. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening?? I have very limited knowledge about Linux BUT I feel that it has something to do with the sample rate of the file being played. Thanks for any help!
  20. Well, I have had NO LUCK!! Would an idea being putting another hard drive, a small one, in the ide port and booting from that?? And then using the raid array as the HD's that hold the majority of the programs??????????
  21. Thanks for the advice. It is getting on here timewise, but I'll give it one more go before hitting the sack tonight. I tried "grub" instead of Lilo and it just hung, so that didn't do much. I am going to try and boot from one of the disks in that I will partition / at the beggining of one disk and then /swap after that and maybe /boot at the beginning of the other disc. I will then partition the rest of both of them to the maximum of what is left and set it up in the raid array under /home. Does that make ANY sense to anyone out there??????? Thanks again!!
  22. Hi all, I was told that I could do this but I am obviously dumber than I thought. I have an Albatron KX18D Pro11 MB with the on board Nvidia chip running an AMD processor It has a Silicon Image Raid configuration Utility onboard. I setup 2 Western Digital 74gig Raptors after saving all my pennies into a raid 0 array. No Probs so far. I start the install into Mandrake 10 Official and get to the part where you have to partition the hard drives and stuff and even here everythikng seems OK but it is obvios I don't really know what is required of me I have got to the point where it has accepted all my guesses of how it should be set up and installed all the programs I wanted. But then on the reboot I am getting a screen of 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 I feel like I have called up the spirit of John Lennon (Number NIne) Just in case you don't get the joke!!! I cannot find a "how to" anywhere. SO, Can some benevolent brainny and patient angel be bothered in walking me through this?????????????????? Mandrake 10 DOES seem to see the raid array, but I just cannot guess how to put it all together to make it work. So, PLEASE??? Any takers?? Peppercorn
  23. Thanks! Is there a ny manual as to how to install Mandrake with the raid setup that anyone knows of?? Thanks in advance
  24. Hi again el Supremo's I am upgrading my system to 2 Sata 120 gig HD's setup up in a Raid environment. I have looked around a bit but I cannot find much info to find out if it is possible.
