  1. I guess the Deskjet 712C printer is not supported in Mandriva 2010. This is a parallel port printer. The computer doesn't recognize the printer and I see no way to configure it.
  2. Recently I purchased two new USB wireless adapters. The first one is just as I received it, no firmware update. When connected to a USB port I see the following in the dmesg buffer: usb 2-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 3 usb 2-3: New USB device found, idVendor=148f, idProduct=2070 usb 2-3: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3 usb 2-3: Product: 802.11 n WLAN usb 2-3: Manufacturer: Ralink usb 2-3: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice phy0: Selected rate control algorithm 'minstrel' Registered led device: rt2800usb-phy0::radio Registered led device: rt2800usb-phy0::assoc Registered led device: rt2800usb-phy0::quality udev: renamed network interface wlan0 to wlan1 ================================================== The second adapter originally caused dmesg output as above, but was then used under Windows with the latest Ralink driver and seems to have a firmware update, although that software never told me it was doing a firmware update. Consequently the dmesg output for the second one now shows as below, with the last two lines repeating perpetually until I remove that wireless adapter from the USB port. usb 2-1.2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4 usb 2-1.2: New USB device found, idVendor=148f, idProduct=2070 usb 2-1.2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3 usb 2-1.2: Product: 802.11 n WLAN usb 2-1.2: Manufacturer: Ralink usb 2-1.2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice phy1: Selected rate control algorithm 'minstrel' Registered led device: rt2800usb-phy1::radio Registered led device: rt2800usb-phy1::assoc Registered led device: rt2800usb-phy1::quality rt2800usb 2-1.2:1.0: firmware: requesting rt2870.bin phy1 -> rt2x00lib_request_firmware: Error - Failed to request Firmware. rt2800usb 2-1.2:1.0: firmware: requesting rt2870.bin phy1 -> rt2x00lib_request_firmware: Error - Failed to request Firmware. ================================================== What's going on here? How can I make one or both of these wireless adapters work in Mandriva Linux?
  3. I have not used XawTV. If your end goal is merely to use your webcam with Skype then maybe Skype can locate your webcam at /dev/video0 Suggest you confirm that your webcam is installed as a video device: ls -ltr /dev/ | grep video To test your webcam try: mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video0 or mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:width=900:height=720:device=/dev/video0
  4. You mean that even after rebooting the unwanted window still appears? Which desktop environment are you using?
  5. I want to use GPT partitioning for two benefits; firstly there's no distinction between primary and extended partitions, and also because a backup copy of the partition table is placed at the end of the disk for use if the first partition table is lost. After converting my new laptop to GPT partitioning it didn't boot, so I had to restore the MBR partitioning.
  6. According to the GRUB project home page: "GRUB 2 has replaced what was formerly known as GRUB (i.e. version 0.9x), which has, in turn, become GRUB Legacy". Apparently GRUB 2 can boot from GPT partitions. My Mandriva 2010.1 install uses GRUB 0.97 also known as GRUB Legacy. There is a GRUB 2 rpm in the repository, I don't know if Mandriva's installer will use GRUB 2 when installing to a GPT partitioned disk.
  7. You can try the locate command (rpm package name is 'mlocate' in case you don't have it installed). If there are lines where 'exe' is not at the end you can use grep to remove them from the list, but that could also remove a line you want to see if exe appears at the end and also elsewhere in the line. locate -i \.exe | grep -iv exe. | less
  8. After reading "Make the most of large drives with GPT and Linux" I would like to try GPT partitioning. Can Mandriva 2010.1 recognize and boot from GPT partitions? Is there any Mandriva rpm which provides GPT fdisk (consisting of the gdisk and sgdisk programs)?
  9. Original partitions created by Windows 7 have some relationship to the number 2048. Example, use cfdisk, cfdisk -h 64 -s 32 /dev/sda then press U two or three times and you may see that partitions are done in increments of 2048 bytes. Apparently cfdisk doesn't work if partitions are not aligned with cylinder boundaries. I have some sense that fdisk and cfdisk are not well suited for work on Windows 7 partition tables, but I'm not sure what to do about it.
  10. Recently I did essentially that but still had some issues due to very little being published about which packages are included with each version. I'll give two instances below. When doing a 64 bit install using mandriva-linux-free-2010-spring-dual.iso I added a bunch of useful packages including openoffice.org, only to discover later that no spell checker had been installed. I learned of the missing package after the user complained that spell checking did not work. I had to add myspell-en_US, which would have been included if I'd used mandriva-linux-free-2010-spring-x86_64.iso for the install. Not knowing what else may be missing from Free, for my next 64 bit install I downloaded and burned mandriva-linux-free-2010-spring-x86_64.iso to DVD. This time openoffice.org and myspell-en_US were present, however I noticed that java-1.6.0-sun was missing and in it's place was java-1.6.0-openjdk. Not wanting any surprises related to Java, I added java-1.6.0-sun and dependencies. Now the openjdk and the sun Java may both be installed, I hope that does not cause any problem to have them both. Even now I still don't know for sure that my 64 bit installs have all the same packages as One or Powerpack. There may yet be more surprises in store for me.
  11. "Integration of Mandriva configuration tools into KDE control center" Anyone have an opinion on that proposed change?
  12. It'd be helpful to have a list of packages needed to change the 64 bit Free version into One. Such a list would include proprietary codecs and drivers that aren't included in the free version. I am not sure if any packages would need to be removed during the process, such as does the free version of Java need to go when adding Sun's Java?
  13. I noticed a package named mandriva-release-Powerpack and added it to my 2010.0 i586 installation. Shortly thereafter a small window popped up and notified me about a special repository available exclusively to Powerpack users. Anyone know if a special Powerpack repository really exists, and if so what packages are in it? I wonder if it's got Zoneminder, wxcam, and a few other packages which are noticeably absent from Mandriva.
  14. I am not an expert in this subject and I know very little about the droid, but if your droid connects the way other mobile phones do it will appear as a modem to your computer. Use dmesg | grep tty before and after connecting your phone to tell you which /dev/tty devices were created when the phone was connected to the usb port. On my installation of Mandriva 2010.0 two devices are created; /dev/ttyACM0 and /dev/ttyACM1, both of which seem to work for connecting to the Internet. cdc_acm 2-3.4:3.1: ttyACM0: USB ACM device cdc_acm 2-3.4:3.3: ttyACM1: USB ACM device Once the phone has been connected and the appropriate /dev devices exist you can run wvdialconf which will look for a modem and create a file /etc/wvdial.conf. Look in that file for the baud rate and other details discovered by wvdialconf. You can use wvdial, gnome-ppp, kppp, or other dialer to manage the connection. I like kppp because it allows me to choose my own DNS servers, haven't figured out how to do that when using wvdial. The phone number to be dialed for connection will typically be *99# to connect to your phone's default APN. If other APNs have been programmed into your phone then they may be reached by dialing slightly longer numbers, such as *99***2# or *99***3# for second and third APNs respectively. The above may or may not apply to your droid depending on how similar it is to most other mobile phones.
  15. If you have a usb CD/DVD reader handy try installing from optical media. You may want to try installation from the dual free media; mandriva-linux-free-2010-spring-dual.iso. I installed Mandriva One 2010.1 KDE from a usb optical drive to a netbook. I had no problem with the installation.
  16. I've filed an enhancement request for wxcam at qa.mandriva.com.
  17. I got motion working on my desktop which is running Mandriva 2010.1, and also on my laptop which is running 2010.0. I am not sure why it now works on the laptop, maybe because I disabled saving of individual jpeg images, making only the avi movie files.
  18. I searched the Arch package database and found Zoneminder, wxcam, and motion. Maybe I should jump ship to Arch.
  19. I am using Mandriva 2010.0 and package "motion". When running "motion -s" for configuring the motion program I get "Segmentation fault". Apparently it's not going to work for me. Anyone know of another security camera program that's already in the Mandriva repositories? I would like something that detects motion.
  20. It's going to be a few days until I can test on that computer, a desktop running Mandriva 2010.1. Right now I'm testing xrandr on a laptop running 2010.0. According to a post over on the KDE forums; once krandrtray is running then the command "xrandr --output VGA-0 --primary" should switch the primary display, moving the KDE task bar to VGA-0. Unfortunately that isn't working for me. I'm beginning to suspect there's something about Mandriva 2010.0 and 2010.1 which prevents the "--primary" option from working. Anyone running KDE and two monitors please check this out and let me know if you can switch the KDE taskbar to your other monitor.
  21. Indeed that is what's happening. Merely executing the xrandr command shown in the first post causes the taskbar to move from VGA-0 to HDMI-0.
  22. There is a PClinuxos rpm for Zoneminder version 1.24.1, 19-Jul-2009, here. I don't know if it will work in Mandriva.
  23. I am not sure if cheese has motion detection, one of my most desired features. As soon as my new webcam arrives I'll try a few of these webcam applications. "motion" is a command line program which can record video when it detects motion.
  24. I noticed an interesting webcam application; wxCam ( http://wxcam.sourceforge.net/ ). It doesn't seem to be in any of my active Mandriva repositories, which are: PLF Free PLF Non-free Main Main Updates Contrib Contrib Updates Non-free Non-free Updates How can I submit a request for a wxCam rpm to be added? if that's even possible now?
  25. Launching a program to the desired monitor is already working, just click in the desired monitor prior to launching the program and the program will open in that monitor. KDE has a choice of settings associated with this feature. I just need a way to keep KDE's taskbar on the smaller monitor, VGA-0.
