  1. Not to give you false hope but in all the years of building my own computers and running a very tiny side buisness of fixing computers it has never been a major blow out, it's always something very small and overseen. I always try to go by the K.I.S.S. thought process --- Keep It Simple Stupid!!!!! But if it is something big remember I was never here  !!!

  2. I was just given a Compaq EVO n1020v from the IT guys at. They said it was dead and the mother board had to be replaced. Took it home and took it apart to make sure all the connections were nice and tight. I had your same exact symptoms. Turns out the ddr memory was bad. When I put in a brand new stick it started right up. Matter of fact I'm posting this from the same laptop while sitting on my front porch drinking a cold beer.

  3. the file you were looking to delete for kde is a hidden file in your home directory named .kde

notice the "." in front of kde, this is the file you needed to delete and then restart X not your profile

make a backup of your .kde file and put it somewhere safe then delete the original .kde file and restart X

  4. srap all of your ndiswrapper versions

go to sourceforge and get the newest ndiswrapper version

after you untar it look for the read me file and follow step by step

mandrake's version of ndiswrapper is old

also do a good search in the forum there are plenty of wlk throughs posted by members

  5. I installed 3.4 last night on my laptop without a problem (thac's rpms) just to see if I would have any of the problems that everyone else seems to be having.

as for the speed of 3.4 --- I don't see any difference in speed compared to my gnome install

  6. Just for future fun --- and the Mods might want to move this ---

if you use Shadowchaser's hex edit idea from above and then plug in this code

    echo "doom.x86 0 0 direct" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss

sound starts working in Doom3 !

  7. mac57 ---- while playing around with something else today and rebooting X a thousand times I got exactly what you described ---- a very brief flash of the splash screen! woohoo

I really don't care if I have it or not -- I just wanted t make sure the driver was acting right!

as for the Doom3 sound I'll try that hack later on tonight!

    thanks to all! :banana::banana::banana:

  8. just went into nvidia-settings and I didn't see anything for the splash screen

It "seems" like everything is running ok and it doesn't bother me that I don't have the splach screen I just want to make sure the nvidia driver is up and running like it should be without any errors.

  9. Just installed the latest nvidia driver (7167) everything seems to be working --- doom3 finally runs (albeit with no sound) glxgears is showing 1980 FPS, but when logging into X I am not getting the nvidia splash screen. I should be seeing that right? There were no errors or complaints when installing the driver or am I just going crazy?
