XFdrake is pretty straight forward, much like any program's setup. Launch it at the command line or via terminal window.

su <enter>

XFdrake <enter>

This will walk you through to set up X server and a test to be sure it will work. As for info, you could try entering "man XFdrake" via same command line.

Seeing X windows starts, you may have another problem, tho. Did you install with at least disc 1 and 2 ? Maybe check what all is installed for kde with this at the command line (and post here):

rpm -qa | grep kde

Have no idea what is correct, but I have been using something different for three of those,

fstab = f stab (goes along with m tab)

fsck = f suck (5 letter variant of a similiar 4 letter word)

var = var (rymes with bar)

I would think rescue mode would of been the perfect solution here. What you see is even listed in the manual (man lilo) --- although it don't list the fix. Try Ix's way (restore mbr first, then lilo)

How are you testing flash ? Knowing Mozilla can be finicky with code --- could it be some bad code on the page your viewing ?

I recently troubleshooted a smiliar problem. First is the ram check and you did that :) I would next try and reseat all pci cards and the memory and see if that helps. While inside the box double check your fans are running and clear of dust.

Next, did you build this yourself ? Do you remember putting in the cpu and heatsink. If you used one of those peal off contact thingies instead of real thermel paste... take a look at the solution I found to my problem.

I believe 9.1 needs like 256 K RAM. Does this machine have this?

Not sure I understand this question, but...

Right now I sit typing this with MDK 10. I could be using that computer to my left that happens to have 98 on it. No, there is no comparison... Mandy kicks butt. :D (although, in this case, the mandrake box has more RAM and bigger CPU )

I also have win2k in the same box as Mandrake. I would consider the two sorta equal in that it all depends to the job at hand.

AS for a similiar Mandrake to win98, looking at the minimum hardware requirements... maybe Mandrake 8.2... or 8.0 (not 8.1... it had problems)

Just maybe your college IT dept. is on to you

whew, so many questions, where does one begin? If you have one in particular to focus on, that may help those that wish to help you.

I am thinking if it is item 12, a fresh install may just be the thing to clear up some of these problems. A lot has changed from versions 9.1 to 10 official... especially kde apps going their separate rpm ways.

Other items, such as menu items, can probably be customized to your liking, if we knew more about your chosen desktop ( I would guess its KDE). Maybe you just need to run through all the option menues and things will hopefully fall into place?

If you still want to take the time to try and troubleshoot all these... I am sure members here will be glad to help you. :D

To install or how to use ?

You should install the rpm files that come on the Mandrake CD's. These will work with Mandrake.... others usually do not.

These are the two files to install using the "Install Software":

bittorrent-3.3-4mdk.noarch.rpm

bittorrent-gui-3.3-4mdk.noarch.rpm

To use ?

You download a torrent file the same as you would download anything else (not with bittorrent). You then double click on the torrent file and it should do its own thing... and begin downloading the file(s) you want... without having to use any strange command line stuff.

Seeing your gonna reinstall, let's wait and see what problems arise this time around. IF, your still having that mouse problem, I can send you one of those green USB to PS/2 adapters. I got plenty laying around doing nothing (most USB mouses come with them)

Take the new install slowly, be sure to test the setup when asked, and use all the "expert" and custom options you can... It gives you much better control and does a better job.

Also, the mouse freezes up alot, and when I try to reinstall it freezes after the license agreement. Maybe this is a hardware problem?

From what I read here, yes there is a good chance this will solve the restarting problem. Maybe we can still fix this mouse problem?

Which mouse are we trying to pick in mcc or mousedrake ? I hear the any USB/PS2 selection works good instead of try to choose the so called "right one."

Maybe not a hardware problem, but more of a conflict, which causes the freeze ups.

What all do you have plugged in ? If you have a USB mouse ... Can you plug in a PS/2 mouse instead ?

sounds like you need to reconfigure your video driver since you messed up the install. A couple more times and you will be helping the next guy. :P

How's this installed ? In a separate system or sharing a drive with windows ? What file system did you choose to install to? Have you ever installed windows from scratch ? Something went wrong and with some more info, our members here will be able to get you back up and running more stable.

I currently have a windows only system that is refusing to boot and is producing various stop errors and saying some file needs to be reinstalled. I would love to blame MS on this one, but I suspect a hardware issue this time on my machine.

It is a standard 3 button USB wheel mouse.

AND it works GREAT w/ MDK 10.0 !!!

Some times the mousetool in mcc doesn't do its job. Sounds like you will need to edit the file manually to get the wheel to work again.

Using your favorite text editer, open up /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

find the ref to your mouse, and make it look like this:

   Driver "mouse"

   Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"

As always, may be a good idea to make a backup before touching this file.

UP speed is different than DOWN speed. The normal cable bandwidth is like 1,500 KB down and 128 KB upload --- which will translate to you are uploading to the person that is connected and downloading from you (the 128 KB speed). And also, because bandwidth is normally reported with this 128 KB "communication" transfer speed... FTP clients read it as "data" transfer, which translates to 12.8 which is the 13 KB your seeing.

You need to reinstall video drivers after every kernel upgrade. Don't think you did that, just saying that would be normal. Or possibly you booted off the install CD trying to fix things and that screwed with X ? Reconfigure the X server and these guys will be able to help you to get back up and running.

My tip for newbies... stick to installing "RPM" files and also... Just about anything you really need - is on your install CD's (or urpmi and Mandrake sources, which needs to be configured). Anything else, is probably asking for trouble.

and what do the last couple lines say after you attempt "startx" ? Possibly a "no screens found" or maybe a "kernel panic" or something else ?
