  1. So far every site has worked properly with Firefox (except janus.com). Yes, I tried janus.com with firefox, firebird, netscape (all 3 on my win2k box) and also normal mozilla 1.5 on my red hat machine - none worked. With Firefox on my win2k box, I get the warning message on janus.com, but I click on Individual Investor anyway. On the next screen, when you put your mouse over - for example - Janus Funds - it should expand into many selections, which you click on the one you want. With firefox, however, the mouseover does not expand the selection - nothing works or is clickable on that screen. With konq set to IE (for janus.com only) it works properly. you don't have to return to normal with konq - I just have janus.com set for IE identity - all other sites will be the normal identity. I don't get why, with konq set to IE it works great on janus.com, but with konq normal - doesn't work at all. I mean, its the SAME browser either way. I emailed janus and said their site was the ONLY site I've been to that didn't work with my Mozilla browser and that I didn't appreciate it, not to mention other comments like being in bed with MS
  2. I meant the sites that put tracking stuff on your computer - at least with IE. Guess it doesn't happen under linux browsing. Actually that's the answer I was hoping for. Should have worded the first post differently, to avoid all the snide comments... :D
  3. On windoze machines, I use Ad-Aware, Spy Bot, et al. But on a linux machine (currently a Red Hat 9 box) how can you tell if you have any spyware or not ?
  4. I emailed and complained to janus.com about the above problem (over a week ago - no answer yet). Anyway, I tried with Konq, after setting janus.com to an IE 5.5 alias in Konq Configuartion - site worked properly after that... However, many other sites (mostly secure financial sites) don't even display at all while browsing with konq. What a hassle just to do stuff over the web. Guess I can use Firefox for 99% of my browsing, and just use Konq when I need to do stuff at janus.com.
  5. I was just over on distrowatch.com reading about Xandros. They say the expensive version comes with Crossover Office and Crossover Plugin. But if all Crossover Office is for is running MS apps, I don't really want it, although I do really like Excel.
  6. <------- not original, so it is not being submitted here. ( Knights Who Say Ni, from the monty python movie). Anyway, I always thought chris z's avatar was from the cover of some psychedelic late-60's rock group album. Someone like Blue Cheer, or MC 5 or something... family portrait.... ???
  7. I was looking to install wine rack on one of the new 2.6 distros, but in another thread Darkelve's answer from suse says that wine rack isn't available anymore. Anyway, all I want to do is run Quicken while in linux, and also the browser plugins for IE would be nice to have while browsing under linux - I can't listen to any song samples while browsing with mozilla. Probably can fix, but haven't messed with it. I don't care about MS productivity applications such as Office - OOo is ok with me. So I would just need just winex * crossover plugin ? Are those a hassle to install & get working ?
  8. doesn't look like they answered very much. So after reading a couple of articles about wine rack, and deciding I want to check it out, they aren't offering it anymore.... that stinks. I should probably look into a different distro.
  9. I also build my own. The reason I started doing it that way was because I didn't like the 50,000 things that every new PC came with that I didn't want.
  10. I installed what iphitus said, and I set myself to IE 6, and went to janus.com. Janus.com did not display the message that said "You are using Netscape greater than 4.7 blah blah..." ok, so far so good. But unfortunately the website still does not work at all. Guess I'll email the webmaster and complain. Lotta good that'll do.
  11. I do everything over the web - everything financial at least. I send money to my investments, check up on my investments, etc etc. I am using Mozilla Firefox currently. I notice that some sites - the one that comes to mind is janus.com - don't work at all. In fact, Janus.com immediately says something like "You are using Netscape greater than 4.7. this site will not work correctly for you". And that turns out to be true. None of the click selections work or anything. It is extremely frustrating. It works great with IE. How can I ever change over to 100% linux if all this little s**t keeps happening.
  12. I'm not really interested games, at least right now. I just read a few blurbs about wine rack and was kind of interested in it. I've been browsing this board for quite a while, even before becoming a member, and I remember alot a posts about problems with wine or winex. So I just thought Suse's Wine Rack might be less headaches and/or hassles. I was planning to put together a new machine, but I am kind of flat right now money wise. I'm considering making my win2k machine a dual-boot when an official major distro comes out with 2.6. I really love the machine, but not win2k. It has a new Sony dual-format DVD/CD burner (DRU 510A) and it is a great Antec case, with front usb 2 and front firewire, and a 430-W PS. Its an AMD xp2000+ and has 384Mb RAM and a 40GB HD and a 2nd 200Gb HD. I suppose I'd put in an AMD barton xp2500+ and jack it up to 512Mb ram. I went thru the k3b flash demo cybrjackle had in the previous post. Looks good, can't wait to screw around with it. If I get a 2.6 distro up and running, I can then remove windows (but not my win data). I'm sure I'll have a bunch of questions at that time, but that'll be another post.
  13. Actually I don't have very many winblows progs that I am hooked on. Mostly all I am doing these days is browsing the web, ripping & burning CDs, and burning DVDs. I use Nero for CD burning, but if I can do the same with k3b then no prob. I haven't used k3b yet, so I hope it can do what I want. Don't need wine rack for that one anyway. For burning DVDs, I use DVD Shrink (free winblows prog) which copies to your H-D, then use Img Tool Burn which actually burns to a blank DVD (another freeebie win prog). Hopefully, there a linux prog or 2 that can do those things, without the need for wine rack. I was asking about Suse & Wine Rack because, if I dump winblows for good, and I decide later I want to start using Quicken or whatever, it would be nice to not need a winblows machine for that. Although I am not currently using Quicken, TurboTax or anything like that, I may decide to later. One winblows prog that I do use is called Moneta, which is a program for Roman Coin collectors. It is fairly complex. I have communicated with the author, and he has told me it uses Borland's Database Engine and he has considered porting it to linux. He said he was not a MS lover. I can do without that program though, unless I can get it working with Wine Rack. Anyway, I think I'm gonna buy Suse for my 2.6 distro, and buy wine rack too. Unless I plunge into linux wholeheartedly, I'll probably never be rid of winblows.
  14. When I pickup one of the major new releases with 2.6, I want to put it on a new machine, without winblows. But I'm kinda interested in what I've read about Suse's Wine Rack (haven't read much though). For a person who wants to leave winblows, would the coming Suse 2.6 and Wine Rack be a good choice? I've installed mandrake a couple of time (8.1 and 9.1) and RH 9.0. That's about it for my linux experience. I currently have RH 9.0 on my second machine and I really like it for what I've done on it so far. I use my win2k machine for burning CDs, DVDs (Nero for CD burning, freebie program called DVD Shrink for burning DVDs). Also, I have a good 3-piece speaker system hooked up to my win2k machine. No speakers ever hooked up to my linux machine - so I don't know much about screwing around with sound on linux. However, I will never leave windows unless I take the plunge and put linux 2.6 on a good machine, with speakers, and a DVD/CD burner so I can learn all the above stuff on linux. Then I could donate my win2k machine to my wife. I was curioous about peoples experiences, if any, with Suse's wine rack... Does it make things easier for windows people to use linux exclusively? I saw another question about Wine Rack (in the Emulation forum) but there are -0- answers...
  15. ok, apparantly it is not an interesting subject. anyway, I found out today while reading something about it - that you will have to pay for it per year or something like that... so I guess I'm not interested in it after all.
  16. Been reading a little about this. So what's the big deal with it ? I understand that it is basically based on Suse linux, with some cosmetic changes. Is the only big deal with it, that it has Java incorporated into it already so that linux users don't have to screw with installing Java into their linux distros? (I had a hard time getting JDK installed on my RH 9 box (but got it done thanks to this board). According to what I have read about it, it will have alot of eye candy and look very nice. Anyway, anything worth discussing about JDS ?
  17. Only mobos I have ever bought were Abit or Asus, cuz those are the ones that the two local hardware stores that I like can get for me. I haven't ever bought a mobo mailorder. I guess like Ix said, I can blow-off a sound card - just use the built-in. I don't have a sound card in my win2k box either and it sounds OK. What about my inquiry about downloading pics by usb from a digital camera... ? If I can get everything going on a linux box that I do with my winbox (burning CDs, burning DVDs, and retrieving the pics from my Canon digital camera) then I can use my win2k machine as only a backup machine... Oh yeah - and if I can get stuff installed on a linux box that I have installed on my winbox - like Java, Eclipse, various plugins, etc.
  18. I'd like to replace my current linbox (P-III 1Ghz, 256Mb RAM, 40 GB H-D) with something better. I want to go to a mini-tower case, black or dark grey, with easy accessibility for upgrading, etc. And maybe with a clear window side panel ... oh yeah - and usb 2 ports on the front. Also I want to go AMD, so I need suggestions for a new mobo and what chipset & processor to get. I suppose an athlon 2500 barton core would be enough for me. I don't know alot about chipsets though, I'd like something that linux would not need too much fiddling about. nVidia ? 600 ? I suppose I'll buy 512Mb RAM. Video card - I'm not really a gamer at all, although I'd like to maybe pickup one of the top games just to occasionally play (one that works on linux). Sound card - anything decent will do. I definately want to learn burning audio CDs and burning DVDs (from source DVDs - my own of course). Is that even possible under linux? If so, I will probably buy an inexpensive DVD multi-format burner such as Lite-On. I also have a Canon S-40 Powershot digital camera, which I can plug in to my usb 2 port on my win2k box, and the Canon software (Canon ZoomBrowser) automatically opens up and I can download the pics into it. What will happen with this on a linux machine... ? If this all works out OK, I can use it for my main Do Everything Machine, and just use my win2k AMD 2000 machine as a backup machine only. After around 2 years of occasionally farting around with linux, I am starting to think I can go 100% linux sometime this year. I suppose I should wait a couple months so that the new 2.6 kernel is included in the main distros... ?
  19. I joined the local LUG in my city for about 7 or 8 weeks. I received about 30-50 emails per day from their newsgroup. Most of the emails were not of interest to me (me = newbie). It seemed to me that all the members were network admins discussing security and the like. The LUG did have monthly meetings at a local college, and the occasional Install-Fest, but in the short time I was a member, I did not attend a meeting. I got tired of the massive amount of daily emails, but I may check out one of the upcoming Install-Fests and actually meet some people.
  20. well, my better machine is a win2k box, but I also have a linux box that I want to upgrade. This was just a general inquiry about some of the post-Doom games that I have never played. This is the only place I ask stuff, winblows or linux anyway... :)
  21. so far, after all the suggestions, I have downloaded Cube for my win2k machine, since it's free. It looks alot like Doom, at least in the beginning. I think I will upgrade my linux box with a new mobo (so I can go from Pentium to AMD), more RAM, and a high-end video card. I'll have to start a new thread for that in a little while so I can get some suggestions, but I need some money first...
  22. do the games mentioned play good on win2k ? I thought I read somewhere that games don't work as good on win2k as compared to win98... also, do any of the big, popular games work on linux ?
  23. hmmm, I just bought the ATI 850DV not too long ago (one year) - already obsolete !! And my processor in my win2k is an AMD Athlon XP2000+. If I do upgrade my win2k box, what card would be a good choice? I don't exactly have alot of disposable cash right now, in fact I'm broke (property taxes due January 31 - $2800). Also, if I upgrade my ATI 8500 in my win2k box, could I put the ATI card in my linux box without any problems? I mean, would it work without a bunch of hassle with drivers and whatever? I think the card in my linux box is an nvidia GeF 3, but I'm not sure. But I know the ATI card is better than what I have in my linux box, plus it has a TV tuner. Is Doom III available now? Is it similar to I & II, but with better graphics, or is the game alot different ?
  24. I'm not a gamer, but several years ago I kind of enjoyed playing the Doom I and Doom II games (on win98). I am in my early 40s and I mostly would like the shoot-em ups, the first-person shooters - such as Doom. I don't think I would really like the RPGs. I like to shoot every thing that moves. Currently my main machine is a win2k box with 384Mb RAM and an ATI all-in-wonder 8500DV, with a 19" CRT, no joystick. I also have a linux box, but I need to upgrade it a little before playing high-end games on it. Any suggestions for a first-person shooter for someone who likes Doom-type games? Would Doom III be a good choice? I have never seen or played NWN, HL, RTCW, UT or any other post-Doom games. thanks
  25. I know this thread is a couple of month old but.... I've had RH 9 on a separate machine for several months now, and I like it pretty good. My only linux experience is with mdk 8.1, 9.0 and RH 9.0 - none of the more advanced distros. I'd like to try something else on my older machine. There is no important data on my RH 9 box, so I can pretty much try different distros over and over again without worrying about losing anything. I installed apt with my RH 9 distro and I have really gotten spoiled with the ease of upgrading packages. I see all the comments about arch linux here, but according to the arch website it is kind of more for intermediate users.... Is there any out-of-the-box distro yet that has the 2.6 kernel ? or a download distro that has 2.6 ? Should I even care about 2.6 ? My linux box is a P-III 1Ghz, with 256Mb RAM. I'd like to stick an inexpensive DVD burner in it (such as the Lite-On 411S which is a dual-format burner) and learn how to burn DVDs and CDs under linux. Bump the RAM up to 512 also. thanks in advance
