  1. ever since FC3, it seems complicated to make things happen how you want with a double-click. For example, with mp3 files, I used to be able to double-click them and xmms would start to play the file. Since FC3 (and now with FC4), double-clicking an mp3 file DOES bring up xmms (after I first selected Open With...) but xmms won't play the file until I drag & drop the file onto it. When googling this, it seems alot of people are complaining about Gnome 2.8 and higher making file associations diffiicult. Maybe I need to become a KDE-user instead of a Gnomie... Unfortunately I left KDE unchecked during the installation of FC4, so will have to yum install it.
  2. thanks. guess I thought since I selected Java Development when I custom selected packages during install, I would have a JRE, but I guess all it installs is a java compliler. So anyway, I went to the same place (Fedora Guide) and followed their instructions to install the JRE: Q: How do I install Java (Sun JRE 1.5.0)? su - cd /opt wget http://www.evolutioncolt.com/fedoraguide/files/jre-1_5_0_04-linux-i586.bin sh jre-1_5_0_04-linux-i586.bin rm jre-1_5_0_04-linux-i586.bin ln -s /opt/jre1.5.0_04/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so gedit /etc/profile.d/java.sh # Copy and paste this into the java.sh file: export J2RE_HOME=/opt/jre1.5.0_04 export PATH=$J2RE_HOME/bin:$PATH # Save and close the file source /etc/profile.d/java.sh alternatives --install /usr/bin/java java /opt/jre1.5.0_04/bin/java 2 alternatives --config java # Press 2 # Press Enter You should now have a working Java 1.5.0 installation. I've done everything up the the last part where it says source /etc... and alternatives. I'm not sure what to do there. So the last thing I correctly did was create the java.sh file and enter the 2 export statements. thanks
  3. I installed limewire as per Fedora Guide's instructions: # wget http://www.evolutioncolt.com/fedoraguide/files/LimeWireOther.zip sudo unzip -u LimeWireOther.zip -d /opt/ sudo chown -R root:root /opt/LimeWire/ sudo gedit /usr/bin/runLime.sh # Paste the contents below into the text file: cd /opt/LimeWire/ ./runLime.sh # Save and close the file sudo chmod +x /usr/bin/runLime.sh sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/LimeWire.desktop # Paste the contents below into the text file: [Desktop Entry] Name=LimeWire Comment=LimeWire Exec=runLime.sh Icon=/opt/LimeWire/LimeWire.ico Terminal=false Type=Application Categories=Application;Network; # Save and close the file # Applications --> Internet --> LimeWire Afterwards, I do in fact have a limewire application listed under Applications>Internet> but when I click it nothing happens. I know limewire uses java, but doesn't java come with FC4 (I did custom select Java Development during install...).
  4. thanks, that worked great. Now tuxracer works like its supposed to. Found out its now called PPRacer, and doesn't come with FC4 anymore, you have to get it yourself.
  5. Error: Missing Dependency: nvidia-glx = 0:1.0.7174 is needed by package kernel-module-nvidia-2.6.11-1.1369_FC4 The install of FC4 went A-OK. I deleted the stock yum.conf, and used wget to replace it with the recommended yum.conf at fedorafaq.org. Proceded to yum install all the missing "fun" stuff such as flash support, mp3 support, grip, etc etc. Everything went fine. Now on to fixing my screen res - it won't let me go higher than 800x600, but I have a 19" LCD so I need 1024x768. So I tried a yum install nvidia-glx kernel-module-nvidia-$(uname -r) but it gives me the error shown above. Do I have to install a kernel module or something? Thanks in advance PS: I could do it the old way by downloading the driver and then installing it, but I'd like to know about the yum prob..
  6. that cymotion's a nice looking kb. Now all we need is a wireless one.

    mp4 m4a

the only reason I mess with compressed audio in the first place is to play in my car on my mp3 car stereo. Its much more convenient driving around with 6 Black Sabbath albums on 1 mp3 CD rather than having 6 separate CDs. I haven't actually tried playing an ogg data CD on my car stereo. The owner's manual for the stereo does not list ogg as a format it plays, so I never bothered to try it out. Maybe some car stereo systems play ogg...? or will in the future ?

    mp4 m4a

I downloaded a few m4a files just to try them out (on my win2k box). Winamp plays them fine. I also burned a data CD with them to try on my mp3 car stereo. You're right, they are apple iTunes files. But the m4a files that I have been finding on file sharing networks are not protected, and can be renamed to mp4. The m4p files you mention are DRM protected. hmmm.... after googling some more it seems that this new mpeg4 standard is gonna have some protections in it. Guess I won't d/l anymore. There's lots of gobbledegook & fine print all over the web about this...

    mp4 m4a

I was messing with a file sharing app (limewire) and noticed that some people have m4a files. I hadn't seen this, so after googling it I find that m4a or mp4 are successors to mp3, but have no licensing issues... Supposedly the quality is better than mp3, at least for the same size files... I have nothing against ogg, except that my mp3 car stereo won't play them, so I never have any reason to burn ogg data discs. any comments? is linux gonna use this format "out of the box" ? I'm talking FC and other distros that don't include mp3 support.
  10. continuing on topic, I'm also interested in Nero for Linux. Nero is one of the very few reasons I still have a win2k machine in my office at home. I have Nero Ultra 6 on it, and there's no way k3b does everything that Nero does, at least from what I know about k3b. Although I use grip & k3b alot for simple ripping & burning, if I need to do any trimming, fade-ins or -outs or other minor editing stuff, I use nero on my win box. I'm not dumping on k3b, I like it. Especially when nero ultra edition costs something like $90 or more for the retail box. So bottom line, I'm glad nero is continuing their linux version. But I doubt the $20 linux version will do everything the $90 "ultra" win version does. Its probably more like the "nero burning rom" program that comes bundled with some burners. After some people here use it a little, post your comments & thoughts about it... !
  11. I've been using FC exclusively since FC1, so I guess I can call myself an "advanced beginner". My very first experience with linux was mandrake, back in 2001 or something, and since then I've been farting around with RH9, and FC 1,2,3. I just d/l the FC4 DVD iso yesterday, and burned it to DVD today. Can't wait to throw it on... I'm sure I'll be back here, bitching about stuff afterwards though... I admit that I get frustrated with having to "fix" all the multimedia stuff with FC, but we all know why FC does not include alot of that stuff. I have been choosing to use FC, so that means its my choice to have to fix the multimedia limitations. First thing I do after installing an FC distro is get my yum conf set up. There's examples on the Fedora sites. When I installed FC3, I simply replaced my yum file with the one from fedoraFAQ.org. From then on it was simple to keep my system updated. I can't wait to try out the new yum & yumex after I put on FC4. Plus, with FC, there's tons of info all over the web about any problem you're having. Every time I'm having a problem, after googling a bit, I find that many others have the same problem. Plus my favorite linux board, this one, has an FC guru on it... cybr ! So the bottom line for me is that I was still in the mid-noob stage when I first started using FC, but I've learned alot since then. I don't see any problem with intalling FC and playing around - especially on a second box...
  12. I may wait till mandriva 2006 comes out final, and check out the reviews here, and other places. Then I'll either install mdv 2006 or FC4. thanks !!
  13. you mean, like, always complaining about stuff... ? :D I admit, I get tired of making the same old stuff work every time I install FC. But FC is the only thing I've used since 2003 I think. I thought I'd try something where everything works right off. Expand my horizons. SimpleMepis sounds ok. I haven't used kde in a few years though. Guess I'll take cybr's advice and put FC4 on. According to the new LF mag, yum has been updated to work a little different, and much faster. Later I'll put on something else alongside FC4, where everything works right off, just for comparison purposes. I've never had 2 distros on one machine... would they share the same /home ?
  14. I thought I read somewhere around here that ubuntu was "going downhill fast" ...? I may buy a cheap mandriva LE2005 DVD from somewhere, just to see what I think. what does "Limited Edition" mean anyway? I want a full distro.
  15. yeah, I sort of got that impression from going thru the Arch thread Pinned in this forum. Looks like I wasted $15 today, just to get those 2 distros on DVD...!!! sheesh, maybe I'll put FC4 on then... I've been using FC for the last couple years exclusively. I thought I'd try something else, just to gain more experience with other distros... When's the next version of mandriva coming out...? Where can I get a full DVD of mandriva LE2005? I don't want to d/l it. One thing I read about FC4 that I DO like is that it comes with eclipse.
  16. I've been wanting to replace FC3 with something else, other than FC4. The new LF mag has a coverdisc DVD with arch & ark linux on it. I may want to install one of them on top of my FC3 (OR alongside, I don't know yet). I don't know the big diffs between these 2 distros, or even if there is much diff. I just want to do normal "home user" stuff - browse the web & email (firefox & tbird), watch dvds (have never done that under linux), rip & burn CDs with grip & k3b, play any audio files such as mp3, mp4. I also need to use Eclipse for a course I am currently taking (I don't know how to install it under FC3). I'd prefer a distro that does everything (ie mp3s) from the get-go. I know how to fix FC to do all that, but I'm tired of it. Is Ark linux a mickey mouse distro, or is it a full-blown distro? I browsed the Arch thread in this forum, but it quickly got "off topic"... so Arch vs Ark... what's good to replace FC3... for a non-geek...?
  17. can this be expanded on a little...? I was getting ready to install LE2005, but first I am browsing all the posts here, about people's opinions about it...
  18. I think I have a 200GB hard drive in this box. When I click on My Computer and then File System, it shows that Home Folder has 146.7GB free, and FileSystem has 9.6GB free. How do I see a nice graphical pic of how my machine is partitioned? When I installed FC3 I tried to make a separate Home, so I hope I did it right.
  19. I have an FC3 box, and want to try out LE2005. I have the mandriva 2005 CDs (coverdiscs from Linux Format magazine). I have dual-booted linux & windows a couple of times, but in the past 2 years, I've kept separate boxes for linux & windows. Now I want to try 2 linux distros on one box. When I install LE2005 on my FC3 box, will I end up with 2 working distros? Will my /home in FC3 be the same /home that LE2005 uses? Or do they have to be separate. If my FC3 home is /home/null, then wouldn't my LE2005 be the same (if I have the same user name)? I'm a little hesitant to mess with a working FC3 box. Its my main machine, and I really like it. Any pointers, or things to watch out for?
  20. I don't think FC3 would like it if I tried an urpmi... However, I am planning soon to install Mandriva LE2005 on my FC3. It'll be the first time I ever had 2 distros on one box. So I'll mess around with what you suggested after I get mandriva installed... thanks !
  21. well, I've been listening to internet radio for awhile now on my linux box. It's great. The only thing that bugs me is that when I click on the speaker icon of a station, it asks me what to do with the playlist file - open with Helix Player or download to disk. I always select download to desktop, then I drag & drop it onto xmms, which works fine, but I would rather open it with xmms directly. How do you do that? I don't see any Default Audio Player choices in Firefox, and when the What Do You Want To Do With This File? pops up with the Helix Player selected, I don't know where to Browse to change it to xmms... EDIT: I figured out where xmms was - usr/bin. Now I can open these playlists directly. Thanks. I'd still like to make xmms the default though, instead of helix player.
  22. Well, I am actually listening to a live365 station on my linux box right now...!! I can't believe it.... I guess linux just takes some fiddling about to do stuff like this. What I did was click on the radio station icon, firefox popped up a window about opening a playlist file, so I said save to disk (desktop), and then I just dragged it onto xmms. May not be the best way. When the window pops up about the playlist file, I'd rather just tell it to use xmms to open it, but I don't know where to browse to find xmms. Meanwhile, earlier I found some really good help on the live365 webpage: How do I listen to Live365 using Linux? Answer While you may be able to listen with certain players and configurations using Linux, Live365 does not officially support that operating system. Ok, now I need a tutorial on this playlist stuff. I am totally new to playlists, internet radio, streaming stuff, and all that. This playlist file that I saved to my desktop, and then dragged onto xmms - what exactly is it? Is it a "pointer" to the location of the streaming media, or is it actually a file of the music? Since I have been listening to this for about an hour now, if I stop playing it, and then later come back and drop the playlist file onto xmms again - will it start playing the same stuff I have already heard, or will it be playing different stuff...? Sorry, this is all new to me. EDIT: well, ok, after listening to this station for a couple of nights, it seems that it is just the same songs playing over & over. I haven't tried to figure out how long it is before it starts over again.
  23. yep, the station I mentioned is a live365 station. well, I plan to install mandriva LE2005 over my FC3 install, but I am still using FC3 at least for a little while longer I've got this crappy "Helix" player that is ALWAYS coming up whenever I try to play anything on the web, audio or video. And all helix ever says is "sorry, Helix does not have the capability to do that". Its such a worthless garbage program, I hope I never see it again. How do I get rid of it, or how do I make xmms the program that comes with I play video or audio on the web? I'm not sure how to do that. When I go to the website, and click on the Radio icon, it normally just pops up a window and starts playing (well, it does in windoze). In linux when the window pops up, helix player comes up and just says "sorry I'm too retarded to do what you want". I googled on xmms and shoutcast, and found several people having problems.
  24. I just discovered internet radio. I know, I'm behind the timess... Anyway, Ive been listening to a "station" that plays hard/heavy rare rock from the late-60s to the early-80s. I've been using my win2k machine to listen. I'd rather use my linux box to listen to these internet radio stations My FC3 box has a better 3-pc speaker system than my win2k box. What is needed to enjoy these stations using a linux box? thanks
  25. A few days ago I bought one of these things at a local shop. I bought it with the intent of using the audio-in to connect the rca phono cables from my turntable to (with an RCA to mini-plug cable). I am in the process of burning all my LP collection to CD. I have been doing the burning with a CD recording deck from Sony, which is connected to my receiver, which is connected to my turntable. Anyway, I also want to learn how to do it on my computer (my turntable has a built-in pre-amp that I can use if I connect it directly to a computer). So my question is, does this external sound work as expected under mandriva 2005. I have not opened the S-B package yet, and I still have a few days of my 14-day "return" privilege left, if I decide to take it back. thanks for any info on this external usb sound gizmo.
