  1. it works fine with <center>, but for this web page design assignment, we are supposed to use an external css file to do our formatting. I can't get the gif image centered at the top of the page, unless I just use <center>. In the html file, the gif heading image is enclosed in a <div id="heading">. Is that supposed to be used somehow in the external css file to center the image? Centering images with css seems like a royal pain, why not just keep the <center> tags, I don't know why they are being deprecated.... I tried making a .centeredBanner style in my css file, and labeling the img in my html file with a <p class=centeredBanner> but didn't work, or I'm doing it wrong. This banner is a .gif image that I made in The Gimp. [moved from Terminal Shell Commands, etc by spinynorman]

    creating zip files

I assume the konq way of compressing, mentioned above, would result in compressed files that would be usable by a college that uses Winzip to expand students assignments... Man, there's lots of choices and ways to do stuff in linux...

    creating zip files

duh... my bad. I was thinking that I was using images from other websites... using the absolute URLs... I forgot that I had found the pics on the web, then saved them to the same folder as my html file.... sorry !! Thanks for the command line zip tip though. Very easy. However, back to my original post, what was I doing wrong with ark ? edit: ok, the command line zip works great now. I can't believe winzip costs $29. I didn't pay for mine, I'm using the "evaluation" version. However, every time I use it, it makes me wait for awhile before it starts working - and tells me "winzip is NOT free software!"

    creating zip files

ok, that worked. Only problem is that when I later expand the zip file into the txt file and the html file, the html file no longer displays the images that were on the page. The only 2 files in this zip are a txt cover page, and an html file. This is a web page design assignment that has 3 jpg pics on it, and a gif image. and a bunch of links. It displays in Firefox perfectly before being zipped. However after being zipped, then unzipped, instead of showing the images, it just shows the alt text... I can't turn it in that way... When they unzip it at the college, it needs to be complete.
  5. I need to combine a couple files into a zip file. I am taking a couple on onlline college courses and the assignments have to be submitted in zip format. I do all the work on my linux box, but then I put the files on a usb stick, stick it in my winbox, and use winzip from there. I am tired of moving stuff around for no reason. I want to zip the files on my linux box since they are already there. Problem is, when I go into Ark, and then select File, New - it has me browse for files. Ok so far. When I browse to the folder where the files are, the browse filter is set on showing only archive files, so it always shows empty folders. This may be dumb, but if i want to select files to zip, shouldn't it be showing me regular unzipped files...??? Either Ark is stupid, or I am, probably the latter....! 6. thanks, I guess I'll try gFTP when I get ready to play around with it. I never heard of kbear, except that its my wife's email name (kbear@....). Right now I'm taking a college elective course on Web Page Design. Its mostly just learning the basics of html-4, xhtml & css. It doesn't require putting your files on the web, just on your local machine. However, I want to learn ftp anyway. Next elective course will be the same thing, but Advanced. Any html or css questions, I'll probably come here to the programming forum.
  7. I want to learn to use ftp under linux to send some html files, and pics to my folder on my ISP server. A while back I was learning basic html, and used ws_ftp on my winbox to upload to the server. I was able to figure ws_ftp out pretty good. Is gftp similar? I thought cuteftp was a free prog, but I guess its not. What's the simplest, basic ftp client for mandriva 2006? Also, tyme's post (post #2) sounds like kde & gnome have integrated ftp support.... ??
  8. Saw Mandrake 8.1 on the shelf at Wal-Mart, and bought it.
  9. thanks, I didn't know that. When I urpmi it, it asks if I want the SDL client or the GLX client... Which one?
  10. ok, duh, my bad... I was thinking "nogravity" was the executable under /games. It was late. Now, semi-related topic... When I downloaded nexuiz-15.zip, it is now on my desktop. Is this the right file for linux, or is it for windows, or is it the same for either. Wheni I double-click the zip file, it displays the nexuix folder, then double-click that and it shows all the folders & files under it. I'm not sure what the next step is, or is this the wrong download...? I also downloaded cube, hopefully the right file... It resulted in a cube folder under /tmp in my /home. Opening the cube folder shows a bunch of folders and files, but I don't know what the next step is. edit: ok, I figured out that the cube game is runnable as is. When I go into the directory (which is under home/tmp) and double-click the cube_unix shell script, it starts playing... Suppose I need to move the cube folder into /usr/games.
  11. yeah, I did think of running /usr/games/nogravity. That just displayed the nogravity folder, and then I double-click the executable. I thought it would run, not just show the directory contents. edit: my son wants me to install cube & enemy territory, so I'll probably be back tomorrow asking about those....!! thanks!
  12. thanks. I did what dexter11 said, right-clicked and marked Owner & Group for execute. Double-clicked the icon, and then it proceeded to install. Asked me for system password a couple times, then after all done, said "install successful". these last 2 years messing around with apt-get, then yum, and finally easy-urpmi, is really not much help in learning the basics, is it...? Now... how to run it ? I checked the gnome menus, don't see it anywhere. I also tried Run Application, and typed nogravity, it said: Cannot display location 'file://nogravity' ok, I figured out that I need to browse to the executable (in /usr/games) and double-click it. Game looks good, and plays good too. How do you add this to the KDE menu and gnome menu ?
  13. rt-nogravity-2.0.x86.package it downloaded to my desktop. There's an icon with an "SH" on it. edit: maybe it needs to be unpacked or whatever...
  14. yeah, I've gone thru that list a few times, but never took the step in trying anything out. That list doesn't really talk about what's hard to install & run, and what's not. it's just a concise list of games. I was looking more for some comments of which ones of those are easy & trouble-free to install.... Also, was looking for comments of which ones would play OK on my mid-range system. I just downloaded No Gravity. Now what...? I double-click on the package file and just get a GEdit error.... can you urpmi any of these ? edit: I guess "the list" does mention what hardware is recommended for each game... I mainly want to try out UT2004 (single player) or HL 2.
  15. I may have asked this a year or 2 ago, I can't remember. I don't play any games on my linux box, other than the ones that came with mandriva 2006. I haven't played any games on my win2k box ever since I used to play Doom I and Doom II. That's how long I've been away from gaming. I was wondering what "popular" games can be easily installed on a mandriva 2006 box? I don't have a real high-end system (see sig below), and I have a 19" LCD screen, which may not be too great for games. What about H-L 2, or Doom 3, or some of the army/war games...? I like to just shoot at everything, don't like the RPG stuff too much. Are any of those easily installable & playable on my linux box? thanks!!

    Hauppauge DV card

That looks like it does whatever I want. I'm not really (at this time) into editing or stuff like that. For now, I just want to be able to download the movies from my miniDV camera onto my linux box, and then burn a DVD of them that I can watch on any DVD player. Guess I'll pick up a pci firewire card for downloading from my digital camcorder, and also pick up a Hauppauge card for capturing video from a VCR or laserdisc player. A buddy of mine is always bragging on his HP Media Center PC that he bought to do all this stuff on. It was something like $1400. My home-built linux box was less than $800, and even with these 2 new cards, it'll still be under $1000, plus all the software is free....!
  17. I just bought a Panasonic miniDV camcorder. It has a usb connection for moving still pics to your computer, just like any digital camera. It also has a "dv" (firewire) connection to download videos to your computer. My linux box doesn't have a fw input. Here is a description of the hauppauge DV card and what it can do (windoze of course): * Output edited videos or record them back to DV tape * Connect your DV camcorder to your PC through IEEE 1394 (Firewire) * Convert your DV movies into compressed MPEG (up to 100:1) to use less hard disk space * Edit your DV movies, add voice narrations, CD music and MP3 audio clips * Burn your DV movies onto CD-ROM and play them back on home DVD players * Connect your DV camcorder to your PC through IEEE 1394 (Firewire) * Convert your DV movies into compressed MPEG (up to 100:1) to use less hard disk space * Edit your DV movies, add voice narrations, CD music and MP3 audio clips * Burn your DV movies onto CD-ROM and play them back on home DVD players * Output edited videos or record them back to DV tape My question is... can the editing of my dv movies be done under linux, and can the burning to CD-Roms or DVDs be done with linux, and how about the conversion of my dv movies to mpeg ?? thanks !! PS: i have another thread under Software regarding capturing video from VCRs or Laserdisc players onto a linux box, and then burning a DVD. Devries recommended getting a hauppauge TV card. Is there ONE card that would do the video capturing like that AND also the video camera stuff I am asking about in this thread...?
  18. I checked out the hauppage site and looked at the pvr-150. Looks good. They call it the WinTV PVR-150, and list windows under supported systems, and all the included s/w is windows. Be nice if they mentioned linux. I see it has inputs for: cable-TV, S-Video, Comp. video, line-in, and something else... looks like IR. My laserdisc player has an S-Video output. So I connect my laserdisc player to the s-video, and then the left & right audio RCA cables get connected to....my sound card...?? And what about connecting a VCR? I think my VCR just has RCA outputs for audio & video. Sorry, I'm new to this video capture stuff. If I learn this stuff on linux, I may be able to forego using my winbox at home anymore. I hardly ever use it anymore anyway...
  19. devries - have you played around with all that...? I mean, if I get into it, and maybe have some questions or problems ? Have you actually done this stuff? thanks!!
  20. I have a buddy with a HP Media Center PC (windows XP) and he records some of my VHS tapes and Laserdisc (the 12" things) onto his hard drive, then burns DVDs for me, including chapters, menus, and all that. I have given him a few of my old tapes and laserdiscs (things that are not available on DVD and maybe never will be...). The resulting DVDs look very nice and professional. Does linux have anything similar to this? I guess I need to video capture the source first, then burn it to DVD. I have a couple more laser discs I need to transfer to DVD, maybe a couple of VHS tapes. Also I have alot of VHS-C camcorder tapes of my son growing up that I would like to put on DVDs - with chapters & menus. Any suggestions or comments appreciated. Note - I don't have the inputs on my linux box required to hook up a video source. Guess I need some kind of go-between from my video machine to my computer. Either that, or get one of those video cards that have all the inputs needed...
  21. yeah me too. the connection problems were all because of ZA. I apologize to linux for the earlier comment "after all these years, this stuff hasn't gotten any easier..." I'm impressed with linux, with mandriva, and with samba.... !!
  22. ok, I got it now. I looked at the printer properties in KDE to see if it had the driver, it did not. Seems it was added as a "raw" printer (no driver). I selected HP & 6540 again, even though I already did before, and now it prints OK.... woooo !!
  23. i didn't think of that. I use zone alarm on the windoze box. edit: ok, I see that zone alarm has been blocking my linux box. I right-clicked on one of the blocked entries as added that connection to Trusted... still isn't printing anything edit 2: I shut down ZA on the winbox. Now it is working...!!! Unfortunately, whatever I send to the printer from my mandriva box, prints a line of characters at the top of the first page, then just shoots out the rest of the paper in the tray.... When I selected the brand & model of the printer, during KDE's add printer option, it appeared that it selected the correct driver for me, at least it said it did. Oh well, at least the two machines are communicating....!!! Now to get proper printouts....
  24. ok I am back at it. I deleted the SMB printer I set up before. Now when I re-add it, I get to the "backend" screen where it asks for what type of account, and a login name and password. I am choosing "Normal" account, not the "annonymous" or "guest" accounts. Then it wants a login name and a password... Does it want the windoze login and password ? That's what I'm gonna try.... Nope, still did not print anything, even though it says "test page successfully sent to printer". I got on my winbox earlier, and checked that the printer was shared (its name is HP). Also I notice that my windoze box thinks its in a workgroup called WORKGROUP. I chose the Network ID thing in control panel, and told it that other computers in a Home workgroup may connect to it. It asked for a login name or if it should require the administrator login. I left that on the default setting (administrator login). Here's what my KDE Add Printer ended up looking like: General Type: SMB shared printer (Windows) Name: HP Location: Description: HP DeskJet 6540 Backend URI: smb://administrator@WORKGROUP/dd-win2k/HP
  25. lol scarecrow.... , yeah, I'm pretty sure it is, but I'll check when I get home today.... Qchem - ok I'll mess around with that when I get home. Maybe its something to do with the printer name? Way back last year when I set my win2k machine as "shared" printer, I may have name it something else... like HP6540 or something....? When I add a SMB printer in KDE's Add Printer, and it asks me for a workgroup, a location, and a printer, do I have to name the printer EXACTLY what it is called on my windoze box? Probably. Maybe I didn't do that. Note: I am using Tux Magazine Aug. 2005 issue that has a nice article about setting up a SMB printer on your linux box so as to print to a printer connected to your windoze box. Its a great article, and it even has a special section for how to do it on a Mandriva box... ianw - when I set up the SMB printer on my linux box, and where it asks for type of account, I chose "normal user". (that's what Tux Magazine says to use). Then maybe I should enter root & password...? Maybe I entered "administrator" & password (the log in on my winbox). But I also tried my linux box username & password. I'll get back into it when I get home from work. Thanks !!
