  1. Mageia so far has it all over Mandriva with these two betas. In the Mandriva control centre you cannot delete any package without it crashing. When you choose to shut down or reboot, it starts the process but when it gets to blank screen it appears to freeze and can only be dealt with by hitting the reset button. Considering that Mandriva beta2 is about a quarter to one third the size of the Mageia beta 2 it doesn't say much for Mandrivas work to have such important faults at this stage. The only disappointment I have with Mageia is that a number of my preferred applications are or seem to be missing, namely......knemo, xmms, apcupsd plus gapcmon, and mahjongg3d. There may be others and they may all still appear in the final release. So far I have not encountered any bugs in Mageia at all. A lot of the Major packages seem to be newer versions than in Mandriva. So far, based on my current experience of both the beta OSs at this stage I think that Mageia 2011 will likely be my next main OS although I will still run Mandriva 2011 but as a secondary OS. Rosa looks flashy but it does not do anything for me and making it a default really stuns me despite the fact that one can choose not to use it. It seems to have come right out of the blue. This sort of thing does not impress me well for Mandiva. Cheers. John.
  2. Have already downloaded and installed it. Now in the process of playing around with it and trying different settings. Seems OK so far. Cheers. John.

Hi all. I am thinking of buying the named webcam but thought that I should get members views first I have installed Skype and intend to experiment using it to contact my dear friends in Maine USA. What other packages do I need to install as well ???. Even though it is a USB device, does it need any extra special drivers etc., ???. Cheers. John.
  5. Exactly what Nexus said. It is pure YUCK. John.
  6. Hi Ho Silver...............Surfer. :D Have you tried entering .....Configure your Desktop......System Settings........Advanced...........Power Management.......Edit Profiles.......Actions......"When the system is idle for more than.." change the bar to "Do nothing". Then select .....Screen and then remove the X in the "Enable display power management". I hope that solves your problem. Cheers. John.
  7. Thanks Jim, I stand corrected. I thought it was due out earlier. Have finally got home 3 hours ago and am now trying to catch up on things. Will check the current situation. Cheers. John.
  8. Hello all. I am still here. :) I have completed the Victorian part of my trip. Melbourne, Ballarat, Bendigo and Kyneton still as cold and weather miserable as it ever they were. Now in Newcastle but off to Wollongong on Friday for a grandsons wedding. Saturday it is off to Brisbane and I hope for warmer weather. Met lots of nice people along the way so it still has been extremely worthwhile. I see the Mandriva 2011 beta 2 is running very late, or at least I think it is. Sad. I will still hang in there for the long term and that includes MUB. Cheers all. John.
  9. On Tuesday midday I am off To Melbourne, direct flight, then straight up to Ballarat for an RAAF Radio Apprentices Reunion over 5 days, so I'll be sampling a few reds and whites over the time. Then it is up to Wollongong, just south of Sydney, for the wedding of Grandson number two so I expect it will mean a few more reds and whites. Gee life can be tough sometimes can't it ?. On a side note.....................I downloaded the 2011-beta 64 and it won't install from the opening Install choice nor will it install after using the Launch choice and then trying to install from there. It reaches the Wizard in each case OK and from there on does nothing in one case or reboots in the other case. I see that the 32 version is an extreme disaster as well. The alpha2 version installed OK and didn't seem to have much of aa problem. Onee I remember was that you could install programs OK but to delete any you could only do so via the CLI and urpme. Not a very good sign is it, even for a beta version ???. Maybe all the really talented people have actually gone to Mageia after all. :) Cheers. John
  10. Thanks Grendal. I'll have a look at your suggested OSs and will let you know what I experience. I am mainly trying these different OSs to find which ones besides Kubuntu don't have the USB3 problem that I discuss in an other thread. This is so I can try and pinpoint whether it is the particular kernel or kernels or the OS setup that is to blame. What I have learned so far is that the MCC (Mandriva Control Centre) is streets ahead of anything in the other OSs. I think the same when comparing Gnome versus the KCC (KDE Control Centre), KCC being way ahead. Cheers. John.

Hi Ian. I can assure you they are likely not the same. Yes it was a CD and not a DVD. The 1st. option is a Launch (Gui) and the 2nd. option is Install (text mode). I did it both ways. Doesn't matter anyhow since I won't be using it in the future. I only did it for the experience. Cheers. John.

I decided to try a number of OSs and got the results I discuss below. I can now say that Fedora would be the very last of the major Linux OSs that I would ever consider using full time. Sure it is glitzy and sharp but what an agony and a pain in the a**e to install and setup. It seems to take 2 to 3 times as long to install and setup plus 3 times the effort compared to Mandriva. One such annoyance, among many, is it refuses to let you run an Account without a password.....lack of choice....yes I know it is all about security.....blah, blah, blah. OpenSUSE wasn't too bad. But in the end Mandriva still has the edge on all of them with ease of installing and setting up. Mandriva MCC is what makes it all so so easy. :) Kubuntu looked promising but having to basically go Live before you can install it is a bit of a deal breaker. I also tried its direct install which is text based only, but is so tricky to follow that it screwed up the partitions I had set up on the Hard Drive. Since it was a different HDD to my Main OS then no real damage was done. It was the only one which allowed my Dual HDD USD3 Dock to work as USB3 and it used kernel-desktop-2.6.35-27. Kernel-desktop-2.6.37-3 in Mageia Alpha1 didn't run the Dock in USB3 mode but that doesn't really mean anything at this stage of Mageia development. Kernel-desktop-2.6.34-12 in openSuse didnt work the Dock either. Kernel-desktop-2.6.35.11-83 in Fedora-14 also failed to work the Dock as USB3. It would seem at this stage that it is a kernel deficiency of only just now starting to come to grips with USB3, or Kubuntu are the only ones to have seen and fixed the problem. I am leaning towards the former scenario. Mandriva 2011 doesn't seem too promising if it is sticking to the kernels being used thus far because the Dock doesn't work in the USB3 mode with it either. Cheers. John.
  13. A followup. Thanks Scarecrow it worked exactly as you recommended. Cheers. John.
  14. Thank you, Scarecrow for being so quick and a detailed response. I will post on success or otherwise. :) Cheers. John.
  15. I have installed Fedora-14 on a spare HDD.(I did the same with kubuntu, openSuse, Mageia-alpha1 and Mandriva2011-beta2.) It is obviously Gnome oriented but I wanted KDE4 so installed what I thought was the necessary packages for KDE4 including kdm and so on. I cannot find a window manager or suchlike to enable me to select between a gnome and KDE desktop. I want to see how they all compare but I so far cannot set up fedora with kde to make this comparison. Did I miss something or is there more to install to be able to do this ???. Cheers. John. Hi Ian. I downloaded and installed Kubuntu on another spare partition. Apart from the fact that it was difficult to negotiate and the fact that it is not in the class of Mandriva, it used the 2.6.35-27 kernel. The USB3 worked spectacularly well. Was even able to view my saved personal Videos from the Hard Drive without any problems what so ever. So the trouble is either Mandriva or the behind the times kernels that Mandriva is using in 2010.2 and/or the reputed troublesome 2.6.37 in 2011-beta2. As an aside, I have found that trying to delete packages in 2011-beta2 causes an error so packages cannot be deleted via the MCC but only by using urpme in Konsole. I am going to see if I can download a progressive string of kernels in 22011-beta2 from Cooker and see if there is some point where the problem disappears. I've plenty of time to fool around, maybe a little. :-) Cheers. John.

Hi Ian. I did update the firmware using a neighbors computer (needed Windows to do it.............Revulsion). Made no difference. I will try the kernel approach that you suggest and see how I go. Cheers. John.

Hi Ian. 2.6.33.7-desktop-2mnb I am also going to do a firmware upgrade of the Vantec Dock since I see one is available and it mentions about changes in USB3 drivers. Downloaded it but need Windows (revulsion) to install it so will be using a neighbors machine to do it and see if that is the answer. Cheers. John. PS I don't mind simple CLIs such as you ask for so no sorrys needed. :-) JB

    USB3

Just a bump. Doesn't anyone have a suggestion or is USB3 too new to everyone, just like me ???. :) Cheers. John.
  21. Hi Ian. Yes it does say no scanners detected, this also includes an Epson Photo 2450 connected by firewire. I shouldn't need to do what you suggest because everything worked effortlessly in the prior install of 2010.2 and nothing was changed in between these two latest installs. That is what makes me think I am missing something obvious . Come to think off it perhaps an updated package is at fault as seems to be the case in the GoogleEarth discussed in the other post on that topic. Unless someone else has a suggestion or two, I might wait a couple of days and see if the problem disappears after newer updates Cheers. John.
  22. Thanks Isadora. I tried just now and it said "No such file or Directory". Thanks Ian. I think that is the answer. I think I will wait for the next updated version, whenever that is. It's not like it is a critical application after all. I truly can't be bothered doing a manual install off the earlier version. At least I feel now that it was not a mistep on my part. Thank you, also Ken and Isadora for responding. Cheers. John.
  23. Hi Ken, you are correct. I forgot about that. Head is a little foggy today, hence the lapse of having put the post in the wrong forum. The installer is the only thing that comes from PLF. GoogleEarth installs normally with no error messages. It puts an Icon on the desktop which when clicked says that will start GoogleEarth but it just times out and then zilch. What routine do you mean when you say use Konsole to start it ???. Cheers. John.
  24. I am running 2010.2 which was a clean install. In the previous install which was also 2010.2, I had no trouble running the Scanner part of the device and the Printer has run AOK in both this and the earlier installs of this OS version. The unit is HP PhotoSmart b109a-m and I have taken care of the models.dat file correction that was necessary and also ensured that lib64sane-hpaio1 is installed. Although I have gone over it countless times, I still think I am missing something obvious. Thoughts or suggestions anyone, please. Cheers. John.
  25. I have installed GoogleEarth seemingly OK however when clicked on it does not start up. I am running Mandriva2010.2 x64 (Third time clean install same result) I have followed up on past posts that I could find here and at Mandriva but may have missed some. Did all suggested. The version I am trying to run is the one from PLF. Any ideas are welcome, please. Cheers. John Sorry Mods. Could you please move this to the appropriate Software forum. Wasn't thinking too clearly. Thanks. JB [moved from Hardware by spinynorman]
