  1. Have you checked via Kmix or its equivalent in Gnome that the Sound level control is not set to MUTE ???. Are you using an insert Audio card or the onboard sound system ???. Cheers. John. PS. Welcome to MUB.
  2. "you should get a modern system". ?????????????????????????. A first class example of a total ignoramus (female or male doesn't make any difference.) who really knows nothing about computers posing as one who does. Glad it was you and not me, because the remark is insulting to a customer and I would have taken the statement to the top brass and had her put in her place and made to apologize. Cheers. John.
  3. At least you were able to get back to up and running even if it did take a couple of hours because of the Disk size. Imagine how you would have gone if it was Windows. :D After an as long or longer time you still probably wouldn't be up and running. Cheers. John.
  4. I am using the above named card. I am also using Kaffeine for Free-to-Air TV download and it works perfectly. It even has the correct regional TV channels for Cairns in far North Queensland (124k Pop.) . So no problems there it worked straight out of the box so to speak. What I want to do is transfer a lot of my VCR video tapes to Hard drive so as to eventually put them on DVDs and get rid of the tapes. I have tried googling this in relation to Kaffeine but it seems that Kaffeine may not be able to handle analog input. Two things I would like to know are 1. what is the best way to connect up the output of the VCR into the Capture card. 2. what is the best application to use to capture the VCRs input from all the possible applications around. I know there are different answers to both questions but I would like the words from those who may have experience with doing this and also any suggestions from others as well. Hopefully no CLI stuff but will still consider it. Please remember I am using Mandriva208-Spring and I have 2008-Free as an alternative. Cheers. John.
  5. If you are going to go to all that trouble to go with the Latest kernel which will also result in a number of other packages as well, why don't you go a clean install of 2008-Spring outright. Since your Laptop is not a recent Model then it is unlikely to have any Hardware problems of any significance. You just need to back up critical data and settings of KDE (or Gnome) and Mozilla-Firefox, which can be found in two hidden Folders in your Account as .kde ( which also contains all your Kmail info and settings and emails) and .mozilla (which contains all your Firefox settings, Add-ons and Themes) to an external USB Flash Drive first. Hopefully you already have /Home on a separate partition. If you haven't then I recommend you should because it makes it easier when you upgrade at anytime. Cheers. John.
  6. No matter what suggestions I try regards changes to xorg.conf, they either make no difference or I lose wheel scrolling. So I have returned xorg.conf to its original text. I have tried AdamWs suggestion of doing /usr/bin/imwheel -k --c /etc/X11/imwheel/imwheelrc.MX500. It certainly does work with konqueror and Firefox and everything else which is fine but every time I reboot or Switch Off then On for any reason then I have to do it again. This means the instruction is not being stored. I can put up with this for a while but come on Mandriva get a move on with fixing it since you caused it. ( It worked in 2007.1 and earlier didn't it ???.) I can't believe the amount of time I have wasted on experimenting to try and fix this problem. :D Cheers. John.
  7. You also need to install package ....ntfs-3g.... as well as ....transfugdrake... After you do that, go into MCC then Local Discs then Manage Disc partitions. Click on the Windows Partition/s (I am assuming it is ntfs) and in Type change the ntfs to ntfs-3g and close out. You should be good to go. Cheers. John.
  8. Thanks ACdispatcher. In my previous post where I showed that xorg.conf showed two mouse segments, this was without imwheel installed. What I found after I installed imwheel was that the reference to the second mouse was completely gone. I tried the change you suggested namely #Section "InputDevice" #Identifier "Mouse1" #Driver "mouse" #Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2" #Option "Device" "/dev/mouse" Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse1" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2" Option "Device" "/dev/mouse" Option "Buttons" "7" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" Option "Resolution" "800" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "false" Option "ButtonMapping" "1 2 3 6 7 4 5" EndSection As you can see I left the original mouse section intact and just commented it out. The server layout correctly refers to Mouse1 as you can see below Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "layout1" InputDevice "Keyboard1" "CoreKeyboard" InputDevice "Mouse1" "CorePointer" Screen "screen1" 0 0 EndSection I rebooted but nothing has fixed the problem. Any more suggestions gratefully received. :D Cheers. John.
  9. Open Konqueror and click on View and click on Show Hidden Folders This enables you to see .kde then into Share then Apps where you will see kmail. Copy it out in full and save it to a safe partition or a plug in Flash USB drive. When you complete your desired OS install then copy/paste kmail from your saved data place and have it overwrite the kmail in your new OS. You will still need to setup the send and receive parts of Kmail setup but all your sent and received emails and other settings will now be there. Another trick is to also copy and save the .mozilla folder as well and do the same to the new OS as well. It will also have all your Firefox settings, Add-ons, Themes etc as well. Cheers. John.
  10. The fact that your computer is only a year old does not mean a single thing. I had four brand new 1Gb sticks 3 weeks ago and one failed within a half an hour. Two years ago I had 2 sticks that ran great for 6 months and then kept having problems for a couple of weeks then the computer refused to boot up at all . Found trouble was one of the two sticks but when sent back twice to be replaced but returned each time saying they were OK. I eventually found that if I made the bios settings for a slower memory speed than the manufacturers recommended that it worked AOK and has done ever since. It is in another box with its mate as a spare machine. My first suggestion is simple and easy, have you tried it before dismissing it ???. I really don't know much about electronic servicing, I was only a qualified electronics Technician for most of my working life. Cheers. John.
  11. It sounds like a symptom of Memory. Try shutting down and removing the memory sticks. Use some Methylated spirits or white spirit (pure alcohol) to clean the memory stick contacts. Then firmly reinsert the memory sticks making sure that they securely lock in place. If this doesn't work then run MEMTEST and let it run overnight or at least 10 to 12 hours and see what comes up. I don't think your problem has anything to do with 2008-Spring. I think my first suggestion is the most likely. Cheers. John.
  12. I found the answer was to install two flash rpms that I had downloaded ages ago, and had been using in 2007.1 and 2008-Free. The two are ............FlashPlayer-9.0.31.0-1mde2007.0.i586.rpm ................................flashplayer9_install_i385_100107.rpm Seems like software gets worse instead of better as time goes on. :D Cheers. John.
  13. Thanks fellas. I tried putting the text into xorg.conf (as root) and commenting out the original two entrys which are as per below ........ Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse1" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2" Option "Device" "/dev/mouse" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse2" Driver "evdev" Option "device" "/dev/input/by-id/usb--event-mouse" Option "HWheelRelativeAxisButtons" "7 6" EndSection However it would not enable me to login with using either startx or kde so had to cli into xorg.conf to uncomment them both to get back in again. What I don't understand is why there are two entrys for Mouse when there is only one Mouse connected. It doesn't work with either one commented out, both have to be there. Am I missing some action I am am supposed to do after adding your suggested text insert apart from Save when it is typed in ???. I always install imwheel, for all the good it doesn't do. Thanks for your posts and cheers. John.
  14. I had to do a replacement of my First SATA II HD (sda) with a new larger one so needed to do a Fresh install of 2008-Spring. Naturally I immediately did an install of ALL updates. Alas I still have no Thumb Button operation again. I have fiddled a lot but again no success. I truly don't know how it started working earlier since I did not do any of the suggested mucking around with certain files. So far as I am concerned it should just work, the way it used to in 2007.1 and earlier versions. So sad. John.
  15. I am finding that if I open a page in Firefox that contains a flash video that if I click on the video then Firefox drops out (crashes or call it what you will). Reopening Firefox and selecting restore opened pages and then clicking on the same flash video it plays AOK with no problems. It started occurring after a Firefox update but I cannot remember if it started with the latest update or one earlier and has continued through. Has anyone else encountered this ???. I seem to vaguely remember seeing posts some where about Flash videos causing Firefox dropouts. Cheers. John.
  16. After the long running problem of no left Thumb button operation of my Logitech Dual-Optical Mouse in 2008-Free and then with 2008-Spring, I have discovered at last that it is now working again. It must have been fixed in one of the latest packages updates but I am not sure which one it was because i have been constantly updating and had partly got used to not using it so wasn't testing after each update. Wow. Mouse thumb button works, sound works, scanner works so the only outstanding issue is the SATA related one described in another thread. Good one Mandriva, you are slowly but surely getting on top of the list of bug issues. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  17. Thanks to FFI , I was able to fix it easily and quickly. Cheers. John.
  18. Open KDE Control Centre........System Administration........Login Manager......Administrator Mode.. Go to ......Users..... the Users Show list and untick your User Name in Selected Users. Underneath the Users List, untick the three buttons below it as well for good measure. Hope that helps you out. Cheers. John.
  19. Thank you FFI that was the one. Home used to be in the menu but is not anymore. That is why I could not remember it. Actually the Home Folder was in the Computer part rather than the Favourites, so from there it was plain sailing. After the drag and drop it was only necessary to Rename and Apply the Home icon itself. Logged out and back in and still there so all is OK now thanks to you. Thanks to everyone else who came in on this. Cheers. John. SOLVED
  20. Thanks Arctic but I deleted it entirely and not to the trash can. I did check there as you suggested just in case. Thanks FFII but that is not the answer I am seeking. I know there is a simple way and I want to find it so I can make a permanent note of it in my Notebook (a real one, not a digital one). Cheers. John.
  21. Thanks Aphelion. I delete the Home Icon on the Panel shortly after install to gain space on the Panel. So that idea goes nowhere I am afraid. I know the 2nd method you mention but I am fairly positve there is a simpler way but I cannot remember it. Cheers. John.
  22. I stupidly accidentally deleted my Home icon as well. :wall: Cheers. John.
  23. I hope some one can quickly help me to putting the HOME icon back on the desktop and without the link symbol attached to it.. Must be older age because I can't remember the quick solution that I used a number of years ago when I happened to do the same thing. Cheers. John [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  24. Thanks Adam, at last. No I have not filed a bug because there is no error messages or such like. I will run through the problem again. I installed 2008-Fee on sda with the following partitions titled as ..../, swap, /home, /allmusic, /allpictures, /zstore. Remember, all on sda. I installed 2008-Spring on my second hard drive, on sdb with the following partitions titled..../, swap, /home, /allmymusic, /allmypictures, /zmystore. Note, all on sdb. The fstab for 2008-Free correctly shows only the sda partitions but also the swap on sdb. Just like it should. The fstab for 2008-Spring correctly only shows the partitions of sdb plus the swap of sda. Just like it should. All perfectly normal. When I log into 2008-Free and I open Konqueror and look at /allmusic and /allpictures and /zstore I see what I expect to see in them because lots of data only exist in those partitions. Therefore I know I am actually looking at the correct partitions. When I log into 2008 Spring and I open Konqueror and look at /allmymusic and /allmypictures and /zmystore, I DONT see what I would expect to see in them because what I am looking at is the sda /allmusic but labelled as /allmymusic, the sda /allpictures but now labelled as /allmypictures, the sda /zstore but now labelled as /zmystore. In other words 2008-Spring is not looking at the three partitions it should be looking at on sdb despite what Springs fstab says it should be looking at. Note that the partition sizes are identical on sda and sdb as the result of 2007.1 being setup as RAID-1 some time ago and the two SATA II are identical models. This happened with an Asus main board fitted with an Asus Nvidia Video card and 1Gb of DDR memory. I have replaced them with a new Gigabyte mainboard + Gigabyte Nvidia Video Card and 4Gb of DDR2 memory and it still happens. The next part of the drama was when I did a clean install of 2008-Free on to sdb this time and a clean install of 2008-Spring onto sda. This time there was no problem with 2008-Spring nor was there any problem with 2008-Free (which has never been a problem of this type whether on sda or sdb). This time when I went to /allmymusic it was on sda as it was supposed to be. Likewise for /allmypictures and /zmystore (I carried the same Partitions titles for Spring and for Free as earlier) Just to make certain of the problem, I went through the routine of clean installing of Free on sda again and Spring on sdb and sure enough there was the same old problem again. Clean installs of the two again but reversed and problem gone. This is what I am using now i.e. Spring on sda. By the way when in the problem mode namely Spring on sdb, going into MCC....Partition Management shows / and /home highlighted on sdb while on sda the three partitions labelled for Free as /allmusic and /allpictures and /zstore are highlighted and appear as / allmymusic and /allmypictures and /zmystore. Unmounting these three in sda and mounting and renaming them on sdb has no effect because when you click on Done, it immediately exits MCC with no Pop-Up asking to save to fstab. This is quite logical because fstab already has that instruction it is just that something in Mandriva just ignores fstab or is somehow confused but ONLY when Spring is on the second SATA being sdb Like I said there are no error messages at any time anywhere so how can I send a bug report when there is no error message to define the bug. The problem is easily reproduceable Identical drives with identical partitions. What is really weird is that /home is not effected as are the other three partitions. I hope you can carry this back to Mandriva for me. Personally I really couldn't care less about the problem anymore because I will just never install Mandriva-Spring on to sdb again but it should be investigated and fixed by Mandriva because otherwise it will likely carry over into 2009-Free and that is not a good prospect for anyone in the future. Cheers. John.
  25. Hi. Anything from anyone on this SATA problem with Mandriva-Spring besides Roxen in another thread ???. John.
