So I want to install this programs from scratch, before I used to do mostly everything by urpmi. But sooner or later I need to learn how to get to the next level. So I went to get one package, and the did the
tar -xzvf blah.tar.gz;cd blah/;../configure
To my surprise I got a message saying that it couldn't find GTK, I was like what??? I use gnome and I am pretty sure I need to have GTK. I ask around and someone told me about the devel packages. So I guess I don't understand what is the devel and the regular packages, usually I thought devel packages was some added features and I think I am wrong. Can someone explain me what I need to learn about mandriva?
Also most of the CD1 have very few devels, does that means this is a similar style to the SuSE which doesn't allow you to compile???

is the "dead" kernel an official one or a custom built one (self-compiled)?
An official I guess I can use this to update the kernel?
-
I doubt there's a fix for that sorta thing, other than using another kernel or applying a kernel patch to the bad kernel... or something.
you mean a kernel can break forever since automount a usb memory drive?
That doesnt make much sense.. at least I should be able to re-mount the damage modules or something similar.
-
yes I did, I said I booted with an older kernel and I could see my home but still got the main partition (root) as a read only partition.
Also X is not working but I guess I can worry about that later... some issues not accessing the glx.a

I was using the laptop when I insert a usb memory stick my laptop was a mess after. I couldnt umount my other hd and my laptop display kept on even if I shut down the laptop :o
After rebooting I found that the filesystem are mounted read-only and the xfs is not recognized.
I would need some help with this one, the only odd thing I did was using the depmod usb-storage which I found hardly related wiht the module for mounting xfs filesystem.
Anywone can help me out since this seems indeed really strange. I had other kernels on the lap so I could boot frmo a different kernel but I am looknig for a way to FIX IT.
When booting I saw many errors including cpufreq (not showing anymore) hal failed and smb.
Currently using Mdk 10.2 LE
-
Like SoulSe said, with the current 2.6 kernels, udev and HAL, this problem is pretty much solved. LE2005 was the first mandriva distro to use HAL and was a huge improvement over mdk10.1 for automounting and autodetecting usb storage devices being connected and disconnected. For anyone having problems with usb storage devices, I recommend an upgrade to LE2005.
I just upgrade to LE2005 but I am not sure if my upgrade was complete since I read on the boot messages the line:
using udev instead of devfs!!!!!
At the same time I dont see any messages regarding to HAL even thought I have libhal rpms.
How do I configure LE to use HAL?

I had a similar problem with my USB key, and it was because I was not unmounting it correctly before removing it. Perhaps this is the same?
Yes, my question is if once you have this problem is it possible to correct this without the need of restarting. Can I re-start the deamon.
-
Its just a test machine and reinstall wont be a issue. But I would be very happy if I am able to solve the problem. Thats what I do with my Windows always, solve the problem and no reinstalling.
Thanks anyways.
I have Mandrake 10.1 also and I also experience many errors using X.org packages. This seem to be some bugs from the xorg and glx.
My suggestion is to update your x11 xfree x.org packages from urpmi. If you know how to use urpmi then just add the following media:
http://sunsite.rediris.es/pub/mirror/mandr...1/main_updates/
If you DON't know how to use urpmi then read the forum for instructions on how to add media and manage urpmi from the command line.
Simple guide is here:

Which header/sound card do you have. I don't have bluetooth so I can't answer ur question but I do know that for bluetooth devices you need BlueZ and libbluez packages.

Interesting I am also looking into a solution for my Iomega drive. I currently have mandrake 10.1 and I have had such a pain triying to re-configure the drive.
I want to be able to unplug and plug back my iomega drive without Mandrake putting into increment partitions (i.e. 1st time it was sda, second it was sdb third sdc...etc)
-
I got a problem related to the management of USB more than the use of my iomega drive. Issue comes when I am working with a iomega drive and I un-plug the usb. When I come back and plug it back, it detect it as sdb instead of sda and it doesnt mount it.
a) Is there 'safe way' to unplug and plug bag usb devices without making it change direction.
B) In case something similar happen how can I manage the usb so it will go back to sda and restart the cycle.
PD: My solution was to restart linux and it worked fine after that but... eww... restart :o

Great, but how does bonjour has to do with ZeroConf?
Is there anyone on this list using a ZeroConf network... comments?
Does Zeroconf networks sees other ZercoConf stations, can I share files/services?
-
Back in Mandrake 9.1 I heard about ZeroConf about using it for the complete Mandrake network.
It was the same time of Rendevous in the Apple. However I havent heard or read any tutorial on how to set it up
Anyone has documentation not just on the protocol but some practical tutorials about doing the things exected frmo a network.
- Share services
- Share files
- Talk to other machines
- Extensibility
- Manageability

I re-installed apache and disable most of the extensions and the error signal is similar to this one:
[notice] caught SIGTERM, shutting down
[notice] Digest: generating secret for digest authentication ...
[notice] Apache/2.0.54 configured -- resuming normal operations

sftp protocol is available in konqueror. At least in my Mandriva 2005 LE.
Now, there is this protocol named fish. Seems to be similar to ssh. Try it, maybe you can use it.
What about WebDav? is WebDav available through Fink?

i wonder if there is a way to install GPE, Qtopia and all those desktop using a mandrake kernel on a pocket PC

I used to knock Linspire in the past. No more. Why?
I had a buddy his mom asked me how do get rid of those viri and malware. Joking I told her "use Linux"
After about a half hour explaining what Linux was she wanted to try it. Frankly I did not have the time to setup a Distro for her. I told her go to www.linspire.com.
A couple of weeks later she is using some Lphoto program for her pictures. She loved all the "howTo's" and said getting a hold of Linsipre on the phone was not difficult.
I was shocked. Yea I didnt like the user as root part so I talked to her about that but her was a grandma that bought a Distro (linspire) and installed / run with no help. When a Distro can take a total computer noice and make them into a Linux user they have my vote.
Yeah I wasn't happy when I found out they make users run as root. But I dont think that is ENOUGH reason to write them off.
I like what they are doing from day one, below perfection is acceptable on this young linux industry.

hi I installed the Pytone and got some erros when I tried running, I saw that some stuff in the configuration file are hardcoded.
For example on the
/usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages/pytone/config.py
I found that there is a fixed mp3 folder saying
/mnt/mp3/playlist
I obviously dont have that folder so I wrote mine, but I also found there are A LOT of hardcoded stuff.
If someone has run this software and have some word of advice I will appreciate.
I am also writing the pytone mailing list so save that suggestion :P

Samba is not a good way because you're using a Windows protocol for two Unix boxes to talk. Silly.
Instead, use whatever you would use in Linux! I use scp over ssh personally, that is the quickest and the easiest, but you can also use rsync, nfs shares, etc.
Remember that OSX is a Unix, like Linux, and they share a lot of tools ;)
If you need help with scp lemme know.
What about rendevous or zeroconf?
Mandrake was making a lot of noise about instant networking with mandrake 9.1 machines using the zercoconf protocol.
Any thoughts?

Help, my apache hasnt being able to boot for sometime. I wonder how can I fix this. The /var/logs/httpd/error.log tells me some process hasnt been able to run on the SUIEXEC.
I make sure that I installed apache2-suexec...rpm but I still have the issue. I wonder if its something else.
I also found that apache reports an error on mod_python saying something about 32 instances, but I also doubt this is what causes apache2 to not run since I am not using the python handler.
Is there any idea what can I do to debug it. I have installed some apache packages and autoconf but havent had much luck regarding this. Any advice?
PD: Something interesting I found is that I type ifconfig and 'lo' was not reported.

Not very functional, I want to create a kiosk interface so for that I want the actual session to be configured so that the user use just the icons on the screen. hiding them like is not very suitable. I want to know if gconfd can help.
-
I am using gconf-editor to hide icons from the desktop. I DO want to have icons but not the devices/system icons on my desktop. I just want to put 3 costumized icons.
Can anyone point me out how to take icons out of the GNOME desktop.
Also I want the gnome-panel to NOT load, when starting. I want to see just a clean desktop with 1 icon created by me.
Anyway to make this happen?
