  1. That did the trick. Thanks bud. I also gave Peazip a whirl and it is a decent little app. Thanks for the advice on that mindwave. I also appreciate the others who chimmed in with help = ]
  2. Been haapily running 2007.1 and just did a fresh install of 2008.1 yesterday. So far all is well except I can't seem to find an unrar utility anywhere. I updated my sources using the new Easy-Urmpi but when I type in "unrar" nothing comes up in the search. Although I have been using Mandriva for about 8 months now I really don't know much about Linux, I have never compiled anything from source. I went to rarlabs.com but they only offer the tarball. Is that what I have to do or is there something else? If I do have to use the tarball would someone give me a step by step on what to do? Thanks guys.
  3. I was browsing the How-To section and ran across this post https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=19212 on writting to NTFS partitions. It has not been updated since 2004 and thought a mod might want to include the ntfs-3g/ntfs-config info.
  4. Thanks for the help guys. I installed ntfs-3g used the ntfs-config gui - couldn't be easier. Thanks again.
  5. I have Win2k setup as my second OS on another hard drive. I can read it under my file manager but I cannot write to it. How do I change that? I tried looking under the MCC in Mount Points and set the options for it so that ordinary users can write to it but it did not work. I also right clicked on the drive in my file manager and in the properties I set it so that everyone has write access to it but that did not work either. It is HDB and the mount point is /mnt/win_c2 The other partition that is doing the same thing is on hda and the mount point is /mnt/windows Any ideas?
  6. Awesome guys thanks for the info. I used a friends pc and setup her Ipod then brought it to my pc and tried Banshee and Gtkpod but neither worked. So I need to flash it? Can someone point me in the right direction for that? It is a 4GB Silver Nano the newer widescreen ones w/video support if that is relevent. And Willie, thanks for the link to the libgpod app but I am running 2007.1 and those links are for 2008.1 :)
  7. I see, that makes sense now. So I do need to use Itunes to initially setup the Ipod then once that is done I can use Banshee to add content to it. It is the new generation Nano with video support. Nice little unit. I was completely satisfied with my little Creative MP3 player till I started mucking around with this Ipod, mine seems like an old 8 track in comparision now = ]
  8. Hey guys, my daughter just got a 4Gb Ipod Nano. Unbeknownst to me you can't just plug it in and drop some tunes onto it like with my Creative MP3 player. It wants to use Itunes. I checked Apple's site but they only have Windows versions. I do have a Win2k partition but her Ipod is new and it requires Itunes 7.4 to run and Apple discontinued Win2k support with version 7.3x ... this means I need to get her Ipod up and running from scratch on Linux. I searched around and found an app that replace Itunes, called Banshee http://www.banshee-project.org/Main_Page Anyone use this and if so can I setup my girls Ipod out of the box with it? If not does anyone have any advice for me?
  9. I like to keep things clean and simple = ]
  10. Thanks jkerr82508 that works just as well for me.
  11. Is there a way to add a shortcut for a new tab in the area shown in the pic below? Although it is easy enough to click file/new tab, it would be even better if I could make a little shortcut to it = ] [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  12. Thanks guys, appreciate the help. Is there an app that does a secure deletion of the free space on your drive?
  13. Howdy guys, when I used Windows there was a nifty little free app called Crap Cleaner that I used. It cleaned out all your temp files, browser tracks, recycle bin, etc. Is there something like I can toss on Mandriva? I know how to clean out the places manually one by one but ... = ]
  14. Don't worry about this issue. I am finding 2008.0 to be somewhat buggy and unstable. I am going to format my system and toss on my trusty 2007 Spring again. Thanks guys = ]
  15. No go! I tried out the alt+ctrl+backspace and I am still getting no love. Any other ideas? If I was the only one using the computer it would be no biggie but there are a few of us so it is necessary to log off and on while switching users.
  16. Been using 07 Spring for a while now and love it. The other day I thought I would format my system and give the new 08 a whirl. Everything seems alright except when I try to log off. When I click on "End current session" it looks like it starts to log off then my monitor goes black and clicks into power saving mode (I guess), you know what I mean, when the green monitor power light turns yellow. Then it just sits there indefinitly. I have tried pressing every button on the keyboard, clicking the mouse, nothing happens. The only thing I can do it hit the reset button on the pc. Any ideas?
  17. I don't believe you can do that. I think you can only put your XP cd in the drive and do a fresh install under virtualbox. I assume from what you have said that you have both Linux and XP installed and you are doing a duel boot but want to use your current XP install under Virtualbox. Is that correct?
  18. I have a few divx titles that I would live to convert and burn onto DVD so I can sit on my couch and watch them on my TV. I tried K3B but it doesn't seem to have that function. Is there an app that will do this for me? When I used Windows there was a great little app called "Convert X to DVD", something similar would be excellent.
  19. Yes sir, that was it. When I did the EasyUrpmi I had it set for 2007 not 2007 Spring. I did the "urpmi.removemedia -a" in the terminal and set it up anew with the 07 spring repos. Thanks guys = ]
  20. I found an RPM for the newest version here ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/Mandrake/2007.1/i...2007.1.i586.rpm installed it and now all is well. Thanks for the help.
  21. Thanks for looking into that for me scarecrow. I went to the Ktorrent site and snagged the newest version (2.2.2). They didn't have anything made up specifically for Mandriva so I had to grab the ktorrent-2.2.2.tar.gz I am really new to Linux so bear with me here! I used ark to extract it, then opened up a terminal and cd to the folder I just extracted. Then as per the instructions on the Ktorrent website I tried typing "./configure" Here is the last part of what happened in my terminal: checking for KDE... configure: error: in the prefix, you've chosen, are no KDE headers installed. This will fail. So, check this please and use another prefix! [dad@localhost ktorrent-2.2.2]$ Any ideas on what I did wrong?
  22. Everything was running great, then yesterday Ktorrent started crashing on me. This happens as I open it up - won't even load. Any ideas on how I can fix it?
  23. Excellent, thanks for the help guys. This is one of the main reasons I came back to Mandriva - the support you guys are willing to give when people like me have a question. I am using the 2007 Spring Edition - the DVD. I tried as neddie suggested and all seems to be well: [dad@localhost ~]$ urpmi.update -a medium "plf-free" is up-to-date medium "plf-nonfree" is up-to-date medium "main" is up-to-date medium "main_updates" is up-to-date medium "contrib" is up-to-date medium "contrib_updates" is up-to-date I will try adding the non-free repo as well and see if that gets me anywhere. I did not know that 2008 was due out shortly, I will look forward to giving it a whirl when it is out in a few weeks.
  24. I have been trying to decide on which distro to use and have been bouncing back and forth between Mandriva, OpenSUSE and Kubuntu. I am back to Mandriva again. I just installed it again last night after having OpenSUSE on my system for a few weeks. I used the Easy-Urpmi to setup my repositories and I am wondering if there are other repos to setup that I am missing. I am doing a search for simple things things like virtualbox or the dolphin file manager and nothing is coming up. Any ideas or am I just being daft?
  25. I did do some searching on the Wolf:ET pages but found no answer to this question. With your help I was able to install Wolfenstien: Enemy territory just fine but I can not figure out how to install the update. Here are the update files is gives me: I looked in my Wolf:Et directory but there were no applicable files to replace. I read the info.text that came with them but there was no help in there either. So, is there someting I do with these files in the Konsole? Any help would be appreciated.
