  1. Maybe that's it. The inability to control aspects of my machine are what drove me away from Windows. Of course now I absolutely love Linux because of all that I can do, and security, and support, etc, etc. No theming support sucks. Hopefully this will change.
  2. I've just installed 2010.1 on my laptop and am using Gnome. If I go to System>Administration>Login Screen, a box comes up giving me some control over login, but I cannot change the default background screen. I've been using older Mandriva releases and could always change this to a custom screen, but I don't know how to do this now. Can anyone help? [moved from Software by Greg2]
  3. Thanks Delboy and Boatman. I am going with the HP NW8240 laptop with the ATI Radeon X700 video card, and I'm using Gnome. I've set the laptop resolution to 1280x720, which is also acceptable according to the TV manual. The screen is somewhat better, still cut off, but not by as much. I am trying to use it to show educational videos, so the cut edges are not such a problem now as the videos show inside a window. (I would like to see it perfect though.) I am not knowledgeable enough to understand what my Xorg.0.log says, but I am including it below. Right now, I can see most of the screen and it's usable, but I've run across another problem. I prefer to use VLC media player because many of the videos have multiple audio tracks. Some have subtitles, and I often have to switch to different tracks depending on the viewers. VLC gives a lot of control over this -- but though the VLC window comes up the actual video does not show. There is a blue rectangle where the video would be. Movie Player and Banshee show the video without problems, but I can't seem to control the audio and subtitle tracks in them. 4. I am trying to display my laptop's LCD onto an LCD TV, but no matter what I do the TV cuts off some of the screen. I actually have two laptops, an HP NC6400 and an HP NW8240. The first has an embedded Intel video chip (945?), and the second has an ATI Radeon FireGL X1300. The TV is a Sharp LC-26AD22U. The TV's manual says that it is compatible with a PC using 1360x768 resolution. I am able to see the laptop's screen on the TV, but the TV always cuts some of it off. Another odd thing: I normally use higher resolutions on the laptop screens, but when I tried to reset them to 1360x768 (which was offered as a setting in MCC) the screens did not actually seem to change resolution on the laptops' screens. Going into MCC afterwards shows the 1360x768 res, but still the screens look like the normal higher resolutions. I have attempted to reset he screen ratios on the TV, but no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions?
  5. I have an HP NC6400 laptop, and I'm running Mandriva 2010. Currently, I have no battery and am using the adapter constantly. Whenever the machine is on, the fan keeps spinning up, then slows, then stops, over and over again in a cycle of about 15 seconds. As far as I can tell, the cpu is not overheating, but I am not certain of this. I have a load sensor going and it puts each core of the cpu at about 4% to 5% when nothing is happening. I am not sure how to check the temperature more precisely. Anything I can do? [moved from Hardware by spinynorman]
  6. (I'm not sure if I'm in the right forum for this, but. . .) I'm getting a kernel panic and freeze when Mandriva 2010 first begins. The Grub screen comes up and then when booting begins things freeze. There is a reference to a "panic" in the onscreen boot msgs. When I restart, things seem to boot just fine, though sometimes the panic recurs. This behaviour is rather consistent: initial panic followed by successful boot. Once started, Mandriva seems to run without any problems. I am still rather new to linux. I'm running 2010, using Gnome, on an HP NC2400 laptop. I don't really know how to address this problem. Is there a boot log some place that might tell me what is happening? Are there tests I can run? What causes kernel panics anyway?
  7. I'm reading around on this forum, and others, and it seems that some Sony laptops are problematic for intalling Linux. I just got a VGN-S270P and can't install on it. I'm trying 2010; I've also tried Ubuntu 9.04, but no luck. The machine boots up and begins to load from the internal cdrom, but then things just seem to stop. I am at present installing Win just to get it to a usable state, but I really want to install linux. Any advice?
  8. Thanks Ian and Kieth. I was able to change the default in MCC, and it works great now. Problem solved.
  9. I have a new install of 2010 on a machine that also runs Vista. I need Vista to be the default boot OS. During the (graphical) install of Mandriva, I moved the Vista entry up to the first line in the Grub menu. When grub starts, it does give me Vista as the first entry, but it also defaults to Mandriva as the highlighted entry which boots after the countdown. How do I get grub to default to Vista? Many thanks!
  10. Happy New Year Everyone! I have an older laptop that runs 2008.0. The Belkin wifi card shows up as a RaLink RT2600 802.11 mimo card, but I think this is just because Belkin uses a RaLink chip. My problem is that when I go to configure the card, the default encryption mode shows as WEP, and when I try to change this to WPA which my router uses it always seems to default back to WEP. In the end, I cannot connect to the router. How can I get the card to use WPA?
  11. Thank you Ian! That worked. Many thanks.
  12. Yes, volume is fine, both in the volume control software and in the manual switch on the laptop. Still no sound. If I go to System>Preferences>Sound I see two devices listed; ESS Allegro PCI (Alsa mixer) and ESS Technology ESS1988 (OSS Mixer). In MCC I see "ES1988 Allegro-1" under soundcard. Something weird happened. I shut the computer down and got the shutdown sound, but there is nothing when I reboot. I will try again to see if it does it again. >>No, can't recreate the sound on shutdown.
  13. I've installed Mandriva Powerpack 2008.0 on an old laptop. Everything is working well, but I cannot get the sound to work. In the control center, the hardware shows as installed with the maestro3 driver, but there is no sound, and I am unable to change drivers in the control center. Any ideas?
  14. Thanks guys. I'm pretty much a noob at everything, especially networking. Anyway, I connected to the D-Link without the cable modem and was usually able to get to the webpage access for it, but this seemed buggy to me. Then I disconnected it and ran directly off the cable modem. I clicked around the internet with abandon for an hour without any disruption. (The cable company did come to re-string some of my cables to give better power.) Back to the D-Link, dropouts right away. Seems that the router is bad. I began doing some research online about this particular model, the DIR-825. Seems that is does not have a good reputation. Should have done this earlier! Well, back it goes. Thanks for all the advice.
  15. My internet connection keeps dropping out. I have a new TV/Phone/Internet service with a cable modem. From there, I have a new D-Link DIR-825 router which link directly to my wired desktop and to a couple of wireless computers. The cable modem is a new installation as is the D-Link router. Something, though, keeps dropping my internet connection. I have been testing as best as I can, and this is the behaviour that I see: the wired desktop will connect for awhile, then drop the connection with Firefox saying that it cannot connect. At the same time, wireless connections seem to keep working. Sometimes the wireless goes out too, but less frequently. I've made another wired connection with another computer, but it shows the same problem. I've had the cable company out, and the only thing they've noticed is a slightly less than average signal strength on the cable going into the modem. (It is apparently only slightly below normal.) The modem seems to be fine, but they said it may still have something wrong with it. I am dual booting Vista on my main desktop. The other wired desktop runs only Mandriva 2008, and my laptop runs Ubuntu 9.04. My question is this: is there anyway I can detect where the problem actually is? It is in the cable modem, or is it in the D-Link router? Thanks for any advice.
  16. I just installed 2010 to give it a try. I cannot get 3D effects going though. I have an HP NW8240 laptop with ATI Mobility FireGL V5000 video card. I know that the hardware handles 3D as earlier Mandriva and Ubuntu work fine. Any suggestions?
  17. Thanks everyone. I got it going. In MCC there was actually no KDM listed as an option, only GDM. I had to do autologin and give the Gnome option for it to work. I also deleted .dmrc. All is fine now. I have two HP Omnibook 6100s; they are identical except for different size hard drives. The other one has been running 2008.0 since it came out with very few glitches. I always noticed though that when I installed Amarok KDE was also installed and the next boot always went to KDE. And thanks about the warning about gnome-look, but that login screen works fine on the other identical machine. I guess not so here. Thanks again.
  18. I have just installed 2008.0 Powerpack on an older laptop. (It's the only version that works well.) I loaded new apps from the repositories, but with them came KDE. Now, when I boot up and login, it goes directly to KDE, not Gnome. Unfortunately, I also installed a GDM login page (from gnome-look.org), but I cannot choose between KDE and Gnome; there is no option given. Is there a way, from KDE, to start a Gnome session?
  19. WOW! I never realized how particular the right medium had to be. I went and got some of the Verbatim discs and . . . everything worked! Now all seems fine. Thanks for the advice.
  20. I have installed 2008.0 Powerpack on my HP nw8240 laptop. However, I cannot burn double-layer discs or isos. My disc drive model is Panasonic UJ-842, and it is supposed to handle DVD-R and DVD+R media, dual layer, and everything else basically. Mandriva shows it as correctly installed, and I can read discs, watch dvds, burn cdroms and even single-layer data discs. I have tried using both K3B and Brasero, but both fail. What can I try now?
  21. I just installed the latest version of Mandriva (2009.1 RC2) on my laptop. The video card installed correctly (I think), and I got compiz working, but I can't move windows across the desktop, nor can I resize. After installation, compiz did not work, nor did I have window borders visible. Changing to Emerald in the Windows Decoration box of compiz got the borders to appear, but something isn't right yet. Any suggestions? [moved from Hardware by Greg2]
  22. Many thanks everyone! I got it working -- well, you guys got it working. I love this forum. Again, thanks.
  23. OK, but I'm not sure what to do exactly. I go to MCC>Hardware>Set up the Graphical Server. I see bars, "Graphic Card", "Monitor", etc. If I click on Graphic Card, it shows me a list of X servers. The one already highlighted is under NVIDIA and says "GeForce 6100 and later". Am I supposed to pick something else?
