  1. in order to change your G5 to the workgroup MDKGROUP, you have to go to "Directory Access" its a program in the utilities folder. click on "SMB", and the configure. in there you will be able to change your workgroup name. BTW...I just looked on 10.3.2 powerbook, its there. After that you should be able to browse to the mandrake box with no problems. I'd be more worried about getting the linux machine to work straight, than the G5. After all, it is a mac....and they just work.....

  2. nfs may be faster, but smb works in OSX straight out of the box. Just do like everyone says above for enabling windows filesharing. click on the desktop and make sure that the finder is the foreground application, and click >GO< >CONNECT TO SERVER< then type in:

    smb://ipaddressofyourlinuxbox

you should be able to connect to your default share on your linux box then. you can change your shares to fit your needs on the linux box.

as long as samba is configured properly on the linux machine, this should be a piece of cake.

  3. thanks bvc. I've become a nazi about cable management.

I love my PB. especially the 12" It is perfect in every way as far as I am concerned. I throw it ina backpack and ride to school/work every day and it just feels like another textbook. I even use it to take notes in class now.

  4. I am a network administrator at McNeese State University. This is a Microsoft only shop. That is if you don't include the sprinkling of macs on the campus. The macs however are not allowed to touch the outside world.

Today, McNeese joins the open source community. There had been an ongoing technology test here. We have been running our mail server on SuSE for the past two years. After seeing that there was not one documented problem with the mail server in that entire two years (special consideration to the admins of that project, they are to be commended) we are switching all of our servers over to Linux. All web, file, and print functions will be handled by some flavor of SuSE. The only different servers will be our domain controllers, which will remain Windows Server 2003. There are also two XServes as well. This is amazingly good news.

It doesn't stop there. We have also decided to switch to mozilla and openoffice.org as well. Saving money, you know!!

Also updated were the job descriptions and qualifications for myself and the rest of my colleagues. We now HAVE to be able to administer Linux on a large production scale.

Thats all, just wanted to share my schools triumph with you all. I'm not sure when the actual rollover will take place, it could be a while for all I know. But at least its happening, right?!

  5. you probably need to add Idesk to your ".xinitrc" thats where startx or whatever you are using to start the x server looks for things like that. If you need help with syntax, let me know.

  6. This is my desk at work (school). My desk at home is much more spartan.

  7. If you want to just try linus and not have to worry about risking ruining data on your windows box, you really need to play with knoppix or more importantly: mandrake-move. both are "live cd's" you boot from cd into a working linux distro. I give 30 minutes maximum before you are intrigued beyond belief and back here worried about how to back up your data so you can migrate to linux.

  8. use this advice at your own risk!!!

If it were my system, I would do the following:

download the latest rpm available for mandrake and install it like this in a terminal:

     rpm -Uvh --force insertrpmnamehere

again... forcing rpms is risky business. i'm a chance taker though. That error message is just telling you permissions are conflicting, files are sitting where mandrake is trying to write to. I have never had a problem forcing rpm's, but I am careful when I do so.

Use this advice at you're own risk. It really is what I would do though.

  9. but if you do the uninstalling, reinstalling loop...you'll never learn anything. thats where linux is fun. have you checked to make sure that your volume in the mixer is not all the way down? and if possible, could you paste the entire error message here so we can get a clear picture of whats up?

  10. I agree. having the fat32 partition will be good. as I understand it, there is no support for ntfs.

512 will be plenty also. I have 2 gigs in my linux box at work, and I never fill it up. I come close, but never over. I'm pretty sure that it will use whatever you make available. Besides, the 2xRAM rule was made long after gigs of ram were ever a feasable option.
