  1. Atually I did have more to lose, my computer wouldn't boot after setting the iptables, it would hang on...you guessed it iptables. I had to boot in the fai-safe and flush the iptables to get it to load, luckily all I had to do was up-arrow to get the right command or I would have had to reinstall my system. I am willing to try new things on my computer, but it is the only one I have so if it won't boot I am in trouble. I will try webmin, see if I have any better luck with it.
  2. I accidentally erased all my pms. I am not really comfortable with command line yet, so I was kind of scared to do anything with it.
  3. I don't know how to use the text editors. I am trying to change my rules for shorewall and I don't know how to do it. I tried to figure it out in kwrite and kate and I have no idea what I am doing.
  4. I have been having a problem with all the firewalls I have tried (firestarter, guarddog, shorewall). When ever I try to use one it stops all traffic to the net. I can't even use http. I have tried configureing shorewall. I have set the protocols on guarddog. I just tried to set the rules shorewall, and I don't really know how. I tried Kate, but i don't know where or what goes in the rules. I have been using mandrake 9.1 since july and I have never had a firewall work right and I cannot use one right now. I have tried th gui for shorewall and it just cuts off nete traffic. I looked under FAQ, but I don't know how to use the editors.
  5. The main problem for my sources is/are contrib and updates, all the other ones seem to be pretty reliable. Occasionally main has trouble. The main one is contribs. The only site I have had work for contribs is darenet. I haven't found any others that will work. I wonder why contribs has such a problem? I don't know what ximian is but I will check it out.
  6. Chris I just did a fresh install of 9.1 and I just put all of my sources on. I did it from easy urpmi. I am using dial up and I have a very hard time finding sources that work. My guess is that it is the slow connection speed. It just won't rebuild my databases.
  7. I think I have it fixed. I was missing urpmi-4.2-3.1mdk urpmi wouldnt install it so I did through mandrake control centre. I still can't rebuild my database.
  8. I tried rpm -rebuilddb and it doesn't do anything, it doesn't give me my user prompt. When I try rm -f /var/lib/rpm I get rm:cannot remove `/var/lib/rpm': Is a directory
  9. I can't rebuild my urpmi database. I tried <rm -f/var/lib/rpm/ _db* && rebuilddb> the response I get is <rm: cannot lstat `/var/lib/rpm/_db*': no such file> Am I using the right command? I am also having a problem when I try <urpmi urpmi> The response I get them is <installation failed, some files are missing: /var/cache/urpmi/rpms/urpmi-4.2-34.1mdj.noarch.rpm You may want to update your database> I tried <urpmi urpmi-4.2-34.1mdj.noarch.rpm> and my response is <unable to access rpm file [urpmi-4.2-34.1mdj.noarch.rpm] error registering local packages> what command do I use to update my database? This is alot like the problems I had before, it wouldn't register local packages and then urpmi stopped working and them my computer stopped working.
  10. I'm not sure how to do what you are telling me. I tried </dev/cdrom eject> and I was told permission denied.
  11. How do I adjust the read speed on my cdrom? I am getting an I/O error when I try to access large files from my cdrom.
  12. When I try to run ephiany as a usr in a terminal I get bash: epiphany: command not found And for ls /usr/lib/mozilla I get ls: /usr/lib/mozilla: No such file or directory I checked and mozilla does work.
  13. Well that didn't work. I just download it from texstar (I think) I just did a fresh install of 9.1 and I figured I would try epiphany. Mozilla does work. I tried export MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME=/usr/lib/mozilla export MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME as both a normal user and as root and nothing happened. It just gave me another normal, promt.
  14. I tried that as both a normal user and as root and all id did was give me another promt, and epiphany still doesn't work. I think cannonfodder was using epiphany, I will try a pm to him.
  15. bvc I don't know what you are trying to tell me to do, should I type > MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME=path_to_mozilla_tree/dist/lib in a terminal? I tried it and I got: bash: MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME: command not found The only reason I have 2 penguins under my name is that I have had alot of problems, not because I know alot about mandrake.
  16. I guess I need to more clear here. Even if I knew what MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME was, I wouldn't know how to "set" it to anywere.
  17. I do have mozilla installed . I went to the advanced searchand there was only 1 other thread and it was no help. What is MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME?
  18. I just installed epiphany and I tried to run it from a terminal and I got this message. Cannot find mozilla installation directory. PLease set MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME to your mozilla directory What does this mean and how do I do it? I just did a clean install of 9.1 and things seem to be set up different than last time. I am confused!
  19. I found this on http://www-level3.experts-exchange.com/Ope...Q_20659517.html If Packages really is toast, you've got your work cut out for you:-). First try to rebuild/save the db like this: mv /var/lib/rpm /var/lib/rpm.sav mkdir /var/lib/rpm rpm --initdb cp /var/lib/rpm.sav/Packages /var/lib/rpm rpm --rebuilddb With luck, your db is sane after this. Without luck, you need to get a listing of what is installed, and "fake" the installation for each and every package into a clean (se above less the copy of Package file) database. This might sound bad, but it can be ... eased a bit. In /var/log/rpmpkgs* you have listings of all rpm packages installed. These are generated by a cron.weekly script by default IIRC. Mount the first install CD, cd to the RPMS directory, and run something like for i in $(cat /var/log/rpmpkgs) do j=${i}* if [ -f $j ] then rpm -ivh --justdb --nodeps $j fi done and repeat with the rest of the installation CDs... and any update repository (or just DL all the updates... again:-). When done, verify that the rpmpkgs logfile and rpm -qa seem to be the same.
  20. I just re-installed 9.1 and when I boot up it loads about 30 different programs, and I don't know which ones I need and which ones I don't. I also don't know how to change which ones arer loaded on boot. It is making my system run very slow.
  21. what does the bbconf tool do? and where can I get it? I love blackbox.
  22. I typed <rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db* && rpm --rebuilddb>
  23. I was trying to rebuild my urpmi data base and I got the following error messages. error: rpmdb: damaged header instance #682 retrieved, skipping. error: rpmdb: damaged header instance #694 retrieved, skipping. I ran rebuilddb again and I didn't get the error agian. Does anybody understand this?
  24. Does anybody know the difference between the powerpack version of 9.2 that comes on 7 cds and the version you can get a cheapbytes.com that comes on 3 cds?
