  1. As you may have heard I'm building my new Linux destop, probably my last personal upgrade for a while. AMD X2 5400 4GB ram etc etc. I'd never used PCI-e so i figured this would be the time to try it. I'm NOT a ganer, the MB I bought doesnt have vid built in, and lo and behold I got an ad from buy.com XFX GeForce 7100GS 350MHz 256MB w/ TurboCache Supporting 512MB PCI Express x16 Video Card compared to the onboard video I'm using now, this should spank it (on paper anyway) BUT I know that graphics drivers are one of the BIGGEST headaches around. has anyone used this w/ MDV 2007.1? Will I be able to experiment w/ the 3d desktop effect? and if anyone wants one cheap. buy.com has it priced at $39.99 today, if you use google checkout for the 1st time (which i did) you get an additional $10 off, and there is a $20 rebat. SO if everything works out io got it shipped to my door for 9.99 (they are offering free shipping) but of course it doesnt help if i'm going to pull out my rapidly greying hair to get it to work! I'm open to all opinions and comments''thanks J
  2. cool, i hope to be placing my order by weeks end. if anyone else has more input on mothernoards OR video cads I'm all ears. thanks j
  3. mitch, ive been running "built in" video for so long i'd just like to be "able" to try the 3d desktop, i doubt i'd keep it. and since it my primary pc, user swapping wouldnt be an issue. and as states earlier, until i can get done moddeing 2008 to do what i want it will be 2007.1 thanks j
  4. hey guys, i'm getting ready to upgrade my computer for probably the last time for a year or so. hewres what i'm thinking amd x2 6000 cpu 4gb ram asus m2n MB those are the basics. now what i have found is that most built in MB vido wont support the new 3d compiz or beryl effects, and i'd like to play with them. i am NOT a heavy gamer, this will be my primary pc and i do some video and sound editing, but i have other pc's avaiulable as well. so what PCI-E mid range vid card should i get. nothing expensive, i dont care about over clocking it , i just want good reliable 1280x1024 on a 2" monior anyone who has suggestions i'd love to hear them, and i have always had good luck w/ the asus mb's but one of my local dealers is saying go MI instead. i will probably order from tiger direct. running mdv 2007.1 again, i'm open to any and all suggestions thanks j

    DDR2 ram

WOW lots of conflicting ideas. sigh. i guess I'll get the cheap stuff (whatever is available 533 or 667 ) for my new MB its a VIA C7 from the Gos ClubIT deal, so it should fly ok. and buy whatever the X2 MB needs. thanks for the ideas though
  6. One caveat I will give to the original poster. I have ALWAYS had issues trying to load Windows XP over a HD that has been taken over by : Xandros, Linspire/Freespire or SUSE. I dont know what the difference (other than they are all Debian based), but I usually have to use an intermediary OS in between XP and one of those versions of Linux. I've never acually investigated what the actual issue is, normally its about 3am and I;m trying to get things back together for monday morning. As another poster suggested, may I propose Mandriva ONE, Knoppix or MCNL, BEFORE you kill your windows partition? The great thing about MCNL is that if you WANT, and you have the spare USB Key, it will actually install and load to a 1GB+ USB key and is VERY quick. J

    DDR2 ram

I have a question about RAM. I'm just about to move from systems using DDR1 to DDR2 ram. my main linux pc will use both, so i know i will have a small increase with that. but I also just bought another MB for a PVR system that ONLY uses DDR2 - 533 (thats what the books states). I would LIKE to upgrade my personal PC to an AMD X2 6000 sometime in the near future. My question is this. a ,local reseller has DDR2=667 for $29/GB obviously thats faster than the PVR needs, but probably slower than the X2 will need. with DDR2, is there any "harm" other than NOT using the ram to its fullest potential, is I use a DDR2-667 in a MB that asks for DDR2-533? And if for example my current MB asks for DDR2-533, but the X@ will need DDR2-800 can I buy the 800 NOW and use it in my current MB, again, knowing I'll lose the extra performence edge until I update the MP. Sheesh ram hasnt been this bad since ECC nonECC days. any and all suggestions appreciated. J
  8. my experience with the linuxent drivers is that they are GREAT! however as of last week, they didnt have one for MDV 2008 (but they are working on them) if the ONLY thing you can get reasonable is the conexant, then go to http://www.linuxant.com/company/ and try the free version for a week. you WILL end up buying it (its $20 you spend THAT on mcdonalds) I have had nothing but GREAT experiences with them, in fact their LAN drivers have ALWAYS given me a better signal strength than ndiswrapper by itself. whatever they are doing they are doing it right. you CAN go buy a hardware modem, but FINDING one can be difficult (as you already know), my suggestion, since you already own it, try the driver.
  9. cool i'll try that strangely enough, my 1st linux box actually is seeing and being seen on the network, now i'm working on box #2 i just wish i knew EXACTLY what it is that I did. thanks I'll try that in box #2 j
  10. sounds interesting, can you explain how? thanks j
  11. like i said it appears to be: [root@localhost mindwavex]# service smb status smbd (pid 3868 3834) is running... nmbd (pid 3843) is running... j
  12. it seems to be, but if you have a special method i can use to verify it, i'm all about it!
  13. ok, I have tried stripping my smb.conf down to almost NOTHING still no go. I'm posting this from memory right now, but if i'm not mistaken it looks like this: heres my SMB.conf [global] log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log dns proxy = No default = USR3 path = /usr3 printcap name = cups max log size = 50 workgroup = Fedora netbios name = server string = LINUXSERVER security = share [homes] comment = Home Directories read only = No but even THAT doesnt work. to make strange even stranger, I tried to see of my OTHER linux pc could see my main linux pc, no go
  14. heres my SMB.conf # Samba config file created using SWAT # from 0.0.0.0 (0.0.0.0) # Date: 2007/11/06 20:09:51 [global] log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log printcap cache time = 60 dns proxy = No default = USR3 path = /usr3 map to guest = Bad User printcap name = cups max log size = 50 workgroup = Fedora netbios name = server string = LINUXSERVER dos charset = 850 unix charset = ISO8859-1 security = share [homes] comment = Home Directories read only = No [printers] comment = All Printers path = /var/spool/samba create mask = 0700 guest ok = Yes printable = Yes print command = lpr-cups -P %p -o raw %s -r # using client side printer drivers. use client driver = Yes browseable = No [print$] path = /var/lib/samba/printers write list = @adm, root inherit permissions = Yes guest ok = Yes [pdf-gen] comment = PDF Generator (only valid users) path = /var/tmp printable = Yes printing = bsd print command = /usr/share/samba/scripts/print-pdf "%s" "%H" "//%L/%u" "%m" "%I" "%J" & lpq command = /bin/true lprm command = lprm -P'%p' %j [uSR3] path = /usr3 comment = usr3MY PC browseable = yes public = yes writable = yes hide files = yes default case = upper inherit permissions = yes any ideas?
  15. installed the wizard, setup samba through that, no change, however i left the netbios name blank, is that ok? smb:/ shows NAME = Fedora size = 0B File Types= Windows Workgroup that looks ok, but still no available shares?
  16. I havent tried the drakwizard but I will try BOTH ideas and report back tonite. thanks for the suggestions! j
  17. can someone who is REAL good w/ samba and has a GREAT deal of patience please help me out here? I have a 7 station network at my house 2 winxp's and the rest are linux of one sort or another. I have JUST started to reach the point where I NEED my linux and XP pc's to talk. My MAIN MDV PC is running 2007.1, I have SWAT, and WEBMIN installed and up to about 2 weeks ago it was chatting away very nicely. then i changed routers and everything stopped. I went BACK to my original router and I STILL cant get back to "normal. Here's my deal: CABLE MODEM ---->Linksys WRG Wireless G router 4 wired ports wireless not being used -----> 10 port HUB ------> all other PC's and printers Workgroup name = FEDORA PC NAMES (that I'm concerned with) = XP3K, LINUXDUO, MICS I have everyone setup on a 10.0.0.X TCPIP and everyone gets to the internet just fine, everyone can even get to the home page of the router just fine as well (10.0.0.1) In Network Neighborhood on the windows pc's FEDORA comes up clear as day, I can access all the shared drives on both windows pc's no problems I have 1 directory on LINUXDUO shared as /USR3, I have added Samba Users to match the windows PC's, I MOUNT the shared drive manually I cant see ANYTHING from LINUXDUO, more importantly from network neighborhood, I SEE the FEDORA workgroup, but the ONLY 2 members are MICS and XP3K. I'm SURE its something that I did, I have successfully used SAMBA in the past (when you had to manually edit the CNF file) I've even used WEBMIN successfully in the past. But for some reason ever since I exchanged routers, and then back again, my MDV's are blind. I would REALLY appreciate anyone who has the time and the patience to work me through this. I KNOW I must be doing the same thing wrong everytime, I just cant magine WHAT it is. According to my book "Samba Primer-Plus" everything SHOULD be working, but its not Sigh
  18. BOOKIE - CLEAN OUT YOUR U2U mailbox, ITS FULL and I CANT SEND TO IT UNLESS THERES SOME ROOM MADE
  19. actually i missed that, as i believe most folks who are buying at wally world will! i'd hate to be working THERE the day after xmas, or worse yet Tech Support on Xmas day. "Hey Halo3 wont run!" but I loaded the live dvd (I cant get mine to successfully overburn onto a cd 724MB) on my Via Epia 800MHZ 512MB system that I use as a DVR in the bedroom and it seems to load just fine which leads me to THINK that MAYBE KUBU will run on this thing as well! Like I said arlier I'm one ofthe few who do not LIKE UBU, but hey if it will work on my C5 maybe I could start to move in that direction, I jusy HATE to start over w/ a nw distro, it just befuddles me that MDV wont run....
  20. Ok, now I'm NO fan of huge corporations muscling in on our turf , and I'm absolutely NOT a fan of ubunutu (I wish I was, I seem to be the only one on the planet who DOESNT) BUT has anyone seen or TRIED ThinkGos? found at www.thinkgos.com of all places.... Apparently Google has decided that they can seel, through wal-mart a $200 pc (monitor not included) with their own branded distrobution and make a mark on the world! Here are some things i DO like. I downloaded the OS this weekend and threw it on my "test box" It is VERY graphical, its pretty quick (this is a 2.2GHZ sempron with 512mb ram and a 40GB hd). but see THATS not what has me psyched! if you can get connected to the web site (they have had more than they're share of issues getting the site up and running), which is a shame from a web giant like google. BUT here's the thing that has me excited, if you look under their "products " page they have done the developers (and enthusiests ) a HUGE favor: through a partnership with ClubIT they will ship you the Gos DVD AND a Via C7 MB and 1.5GHZ CPU for $59 USD. Now I have a C5 cpu and MB and unfortunately out of the box MDV wont run on it (and yet winXP will?) so if they are telling me that Gos WILL and they are willing to SAVE me $80 on the hardware....well please cruise on over to ebay and check out some of my auctions, I ned $60. THIS would be SO great, The C5 that I have (800MHZ) runs VERY quiet and very nicely (using it as a PVR) and I would love to see how FAST it would be using a decent linux distro. and hey, maybe i would even begin to LIKE ubunutu!!!!! Anyway, anyone here who has Gos installed I'd love to hear what you have found to like or dislike. As soon as I get some time to play with it, I'll let you know! j
  21. well temps are always good to. but the REAL question is, what else have you INSTALLED since you did the HD install. unfortunately it doesnt take much to outgrow a CD. I think Kris has done a great job at slimming down MDV, but for example I did a power pak+ hd install with the specific idea of creating an MCNL type setup. the SMALLEST ive ever gotten it is 2.2GB, I typically hover around 3.1 and 4.1GB, now they compress down to 2.1 when I ISO them, but i have NO games 1 mail prog and about 8 other apps installed from the base. so again, open konsole, SU and the DF, and see how much room youre taking up. one thing i DID learn the hard way. I have never gotten a working live ISO by leaving anything other than my "/" mounted I have a 320gb data drive, and even when it was empty if I left it mounted my ISO's woundt run
  22. which ACer? I have a 5035wli that t works great on, even got the wireless working
  23. just my 2 cts, I too had LOTS of issues w/ CUPS (still do occasionally) but I installed webmin basically a graphical front end for most servers, and everything works well
  24. Hey, 2007.1 install on a HD that had a previous 2007 install. Everything looked like it went fine, booted to the GRUB menu, selecetd the regular OS. and I get the GRUB error 24 I believe that a complete reformat fdisk will make things right (and a reinstall) but anyone else have any better ideas? thanks
  25. Hey! I just saw the Linksys WRT150N at BB for $99 and on pricewatch for MUCH less. I need to update my networking hardware and I'd like to go N (yeah yeah I know its not a standard yet) but i have to wonder why thee is almost a $50-$75 difference between this and their original N series WRT300N. now i'll admit the 300N LOOKS a whole lot more impressive....
