  1. I'm trying to install Mplayer following illogic-al's tutorial http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php...ghlight=mplayer, but I get this error at the unpacking stage: What's this mean?
  2. I recently installed Mozilla 3.1, but I can't view videos (Quicktime, Realplayer). In "About Plugins" in the Help section of Mozilla, the mplayer-plugin v0.60 is listed as installed, but if I try to view a video, I'm told I need to install the plugin I installed Mozilla with the tar.gz from their site as per the accompanying readme file How do I make Mozilla aware of the plugin?
  3. I installed the 1.3 tar.gz from the Mozilla site http://www.mozilla.org/ I went according to the instructions in the readme file in the package and it went quite smoothly

    333 FSB

I've been using the Epox 8K3AE (KT333) for about a month now and I'm very happy with it. It's coupled to a XP 1800 which is not overclocked and serves my purposes. As far as I can tell from reviews of this board, I'm not using it to it's full potential re overclocking, gaming, etc, but I can't be bothered with that unless performance is lacking, which it isn't. I noticed a huge performance increase over my previous setup, Aopen KT133 board with K6 400 cpu, but that's to be expected

I tried it a few weeks ago, but it didn't pick up my modem or sound card. As far as I can see, there's no where to manually configure, except maybe console, which I'm not too good at. They had a forum, but it's been closed until the final release comes out. So, in short, it's just sitting on my computer until I figure out how to use it
  7. Everybody answers questions here with the intention of helping. If the answers don't help you, rephrase the question and try again. You're not going to get much help by calling other people's responses "unintelligent"
  8. Go to KDE Contol Centre (if you're using KDE), look in System, Login Manager. Under "Users" tab, see if you have Root checked as a hidden user. If so, uncheck it so it will show up as an option in your login screen. However, using root like this is potentially dangerous. As stated in a previous post, the best way to use root is su/password in a console
  9. Check in /etc/X11/xf86config-4 what's listed for "driver" in the "Device" section. It should be "nvidia"
  10. Sometimes right after bootup into Mdk, if I start xmms, I get an error that the device is not available. If I try a minute or two later, it works. Don't know what the cause is
  11. Sounds like some packages weren't installed. I installed all the packages from ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distribut...ke/9.0/KDE-3.1/ and uninstalled crystal icons and Keramik (these are included in 3.1)
  12. I recently replaced my mboard, cpu and video card in one go. I let Mandrake loose on the new equipment and everything was detected and set up without my intervention. ( VIA KT333, XP1800, 440MX) Maybe I was just lucky, but I figured the worst thing that could happen, I would have to reinstall. It's only software, right? On the other hand, backing up is always a good idea

    synaptic issues

I had that problem too. Typing "apt-get update" in console fixed it for me

    No Sound in RH 8

Thanks ral, lots of ideas there. I'll filter through them

    No Sound in RH 8

I just installed RedHat 8 alongside Mdk to try it out, but I can't get the sound to work. The sound module is not starting at bootup. The sound chip is detected correctly (AC '97 onboard on VIA KT-333 chipset). I think RH is loading the wrong module. Sound works fine in Mdk 9.0 but there it's using a different module Anyone know how to tweak sound settings in RH? I can't find anything like MCC where you can select a different card/driver
  17. I'm using gkrellm-2.1.0-3tex. Your version seems quite old. When I installed it didn't ask me for that file. If you're running Mdk 9.0 I'd suggest trying a newer version of gkrellm. Here's one site: ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distribut...drake/9.0/rpms/
  18. Spoke too soon - root file manager also doesn't work, install/uninstall problems with rpmdrake I'm not willing to use a desktop that looks good but isn't functional. I'm going back to 3.0.5
  19. Finally, after three abortive attempts, rc5 up and running! I used the rpms from http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/mandrak...e-3.1-rc5/RPMS/ I couldn't get it to work with Texstar's, but I know other people did, so maybe it's a system thing. Only thing that's not working is Krusader, my file manager. Starting it in the console gives me this message: Anybody know what this means?
  20. Well I tried it again last night, before I read the last two posts about the noarch files and ended up without a functional desktop, as before. I'm now back to 3.0.5 (getting good at this). I'll try again with the latest information. Maybe this time
  21. After trashing my system first time round with KDE 3.1, I'm ready to try again. I've downloaded all the files at http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/mandrak...e-3.1-rc5/RPMS/ except the "noarch" directory. Don't know what they are - do I need them? The plan is to exit KDE, delete the .kde directory and install 3.1 rpms with urpmi. How's that sound?

    Had enough of rc5

Looking at the above site (previous post), what are the "noarch" files? Do they need to be installed too?
  23. mdg

    Had enough of rc5

The KDE3.0.5 install went smoothly and I have all my programs and functionality back - makes me happy I'm willing to have another go at 3.1 (it's just a computer, right?), I'll post again after work for details on how to go about it

    Had enough of rc5

I used Texstars rpms and no, I didn't unload .kde before. I've since done the whole thing over (details here http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=2000) but there are still problems. Kpackage won't uninstall programs and still lists them as installed even after I've deleted them with urpme. Krusader won't work, desktop fonts look terrible, plus a few other little things. I'll wait until KDE3.1 becomes official Thanks for the 3.05 link

    Had enough of rc5

I'm having various problems with KDE 3.1rc5 which I don't feel up to tackling at this stage. I had 3.04 before and it was pretty stable. What I want to do is uninstall 3.1, then install 3.05. I jumped in the deep end installing 3.1 without asking advice and with limited information. The result was Mdk reinstall. So, I'm now asking advice, how would I go about wiping out 3.1 putting in 3.05? Also where are the 3.05 rpms?
