  1. A copy of the actual patent can be seen here:

    http://www.google.com/patents?id=3tUkAAAAE...mp;dq=5,072,412

Having read it, albeit briefly, it seems to me that the holders would have good case to go after Microsoft for Internet Explorer. It to uses workspaces with forward and back 'doors'. Not to mention the snazzy new Vista desktop!

I am sure we will see M$ leaping to the the aid if their pals at Novell to make sure this fails and IP Innovation don't come after them next (or maybe not? ;) )

  2. When trying to do the first boot after installing 2008 it hangs with a kernel panic. I tried to install 2007 One and that did exactly the same. I used to have 2007 installed and working but since then I have added a second hard drive so I assume that is the issue. I have previously had Sabayon installed in this PC so I know Linux does work with it. The hard drive partitions are as follows:

    SDA1 Windows XP (NTFS)

    SDA2 Data (FAT32)

    SDB1 /boot

    SDB2 /

    SDB3 Data (NTFS)

When I look at the partition table using Gparted it says that the file system on SDB2 is 'unknown'. I don't know if that is significant or just because the installation hasn't been completed?

The error message during boot up is as follows:

    mounting filesystem /dev/root
mount: error 6 mounting ext3 flags default
    well, retrying without option flags
    mount: error 6 mounting ext3
    well, retrying without any flags
    mount: error 6 mounting ext3
    switching to new root
    ERROR opening /dev/console!!!!:2
    unmounting old /proc
    unmounting old /sys
    switch root: mount failed:22
    initrd finished
kernel panic - not syncing:attempted to kill init

  3. Hello!

I have been using Sabayon for quite a while but for various reasons want to go back to a more 'conventional' distro. One of the features of Sabayon is that it can read AND write to NTFS partitions, can Mandriva 2008 do the same?

Edit: Actually what I meant to ask was can Mandriva 2008 write to NTFS by default or do you have to intall NTFS-3g or similar?

I will believe this when I see it! ;)

It is one thing to "... offer Ubuntu 7.04 as an option on select consumer models..." it is quite another to actively promote Ubuntu as an option.

Is it a marketing strategy to get business from existing Linux users but don't try and win any new converts so as not to upset the folks at Redmond? Everyone in the Linux community will know about this but the majority of Dell customers will still be in blissful ignorance.

  5. I have been using Mandriva One 2007 (KDE) for several weeks, and very nice it is too. However, a few days ago I opened the Mandriva Control Centre and got a 'new media detect' message window. This was for my floppy drive which did not have a disk in it. This now happens every time I open the control centre. If I click cancel it goes away, if select 'open' it tries to mount the disk but obviously fails as there is no disk. Any idea why this is happening and what I can do to stop it. The only changes i have made to the system lately is installing Google Earth.

  6. I am using Mandriva One with KDE. I changed the icon them using the 'configure your computer' option from the system menu. Then i decided I didn't like the new theme and went to change it back but the setup menu wouldn't open. If I run it from console I get the following:

    [dt@Viglen ~]$ /usr/sbin/drakconf
    [dt@Viglen ~]$
(drakconf.real:5847): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme file for default has no name

(drakconf.real:5847): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme file for default has no directories

    Any ideas anyone? Anyone?

  7. Using Mandriva One, when I plug in my digital camera via the USB port it is detected with the folllowing message:

A new medium has been detected what do you want to do?

    Medium Type: Camera

If I choose 'open in a new window' I get the following error message:

Could not start process Unable to create io-slave:

    klauncher said: Unknown protocol 'camera'.

Any suggestions most welcome. It is not a huge issue as the camera IS detected by digiKam and I can download pics with that. however. I do not like unresolved error messages so it would be nice to fix it.

  8. i just bought a 250 gb external hard drive and want to install mandriva on it.

    1)= is it possable

    it connects via usb

my pc has a 20g that has windows on it that i wish to keep and make a dual boot

anyone tell me if it possable to put mandriva on th usb harddrive

If it was me, I would seriously consider getting another internal HD and keep the external one for data. I think booting from a USB drive is going to be very inneficient. You can get an 80G HD for under £30 and companies like Maxtor provide cloning software FOC that will let you clone all the data on your existing HD.

You could just add a 2nd drive but you would lose the benefits of having a newer and fast HD as your main drive.

  9. Since my last post on this subject I have dumped Skype, for the pure reason a lot of my acquaintances had other networks for communication ( fwd.pulver.com amongst others ) and I could not connect with skype. So I opted for Ekiga from ekiga.net Now I can connect to quite a few different networks and ekiga was written for linux. Not as fancy as skype but it works for me. Cheap landline calls globally. Can't fault it really. :P

The 'problem' with Ekiga is that it is not compatible with Skype. Whatever you may think about Skype it is the market leader.

  10. Thanks John!

I didn t realise that MS was actually manufactured by logitech, I ll get one of those then!

For the batteries I don t worry too much, I charge them during long car trips or with the sun (i-sun) so it's ok.

I use Logitech cordless keyboard and mouse. It has worked perfectly with every Linux distro I have tried (including live CDs). The transmitter has a PS2 and USB connector so you can choose what suites you best.
