  1. Not exactly a newbie, I've been using a Mandrake/Mandriva server for about 4 or 5 years, but I don't use it for much other than a file server, so I don't really know as much as I ought to. However, I'm currently running 2008 on a P4 2ghz. Ideally I'd like to to host a VMWARE virtual machine or two on it, but I'm hampered by the memory constraints not only of 32-bit, but of my P4 motherboard which is now fully populated with 2x 1Gb DDR. My linux server has always been a cheap and cheerful box made up of 2-3 yr old hardware, so to get a 32-bit CPU & MBd that can take 4Gb is possible now, but then it might be not much less cheaper to go for something 64-bit. I've seen some AMD 64bit processors and boards that can go up to 8Gb, and still run a 32bit OS. Am I correct in thinking, however, that even if I run my 32-bit box on this hardware, It'll still only see a maximum of 4Gb? Cheers! Dave
  2. It actually took me longer to swop the motherboard & cards out than it did for the system to boot up and update itself (found a new onboard NIC and...umm...that's it). My job primarily involves support to a Windows userbase, so I'm genuinely surprised when upgrades go as well as this. Mind you, you think Windows is bad. Anyone remember OS/2 Warp? Config.sys file a mile long, and when it went down, it really went down!
  3. To all concerned. Box safely transferred over to Asus P4B533-VM motherboard running P4-1700 with 1Gb 266 DDR. All working swimmingly with the old generic kernel. Sees the memory fine. And so much faster! :)
  4. Thanks v much everyone. I look forward to breaking the 1Gb barrier!
  5. Hi all I'm currently running Mandriva 2007 on a P3-600 with 768Mb RAM. That's the most the old board will take (3 slots maxed at 256Mb). However, I now find myself in possession of a P4-1700 on a board that will go up to 2Gb DDR (The Big Time!). The last time I upgraded hardware everything went swimmingly, none of this BSOD Windows rubbish with different HALs, and I'm hoping the same thing will happen again. However, this is the first time I've gone over 1Gb. I have a niggling thought that I've read somewhere I'll need another kernel to address <1Gb RAM. Is this right? If so, can I just get one off the Mandriva peg so to speak? Uname -r tells me I'm running 2.6/17-5mdv. cheers Dave
  6. Ta for the info. Still all working fine. Bound to have been something I did, but guess I'll never know what.
  7. It's working now, but how strange. I thought I'd tried everything. Even changing the ip address on the box, and altering port forwarding on the router. The one thing I never managed to do was...restart the router. It's working now that the router's been rebooted (even though the Windows workstations on the same router never had a problem at all). Guess I'll just have to put it down to one of those things.
  8. I've done something to my mandriva 2007 box and I don't know what. I only really use it as a file server, but I VNC to a kde desktop and occasionally run things. First thing I noticed was that browsers could no longer access external web pages (though they can access the internal web server). There's no error, just a "waiting for...." at the bottom of the page. All other protocols work fine, because I can access the box through ssh & vnc remotely. It's not browser specific because it happens with Opera, Mozilla, and Lynx (which sticks at "HTTP request sent; waiting for response") I've had a linux guy from work on the case & he says it's not iptables because we've turned them off and it still happens. I've changed mandriva's local IP address, and the other two PCs on the box are fine. I've run wireshark and done a test attempt to connect to www.yahoo.com, and apparantly I get 3 Acks, then I sent a GET /HTTP/ and nothing comes back. I've saved the TCPdump if anyone knows how to read it! I connect through a modem/router, and I have some port forwarding going on, but only for two ports for ssh and vnc, and they've always been there. Can anyone help? I'm not fantastically hot on commmand line, but I know my way around the file system & I can locate & view files. cheers Dave
  9. I run a vncserver at home that I connect to from work. For a year now I've been running the server off the same display - 17. For reasons that have nothing to do with this post, I have to move the server to another display. However, whenever I run my KDE desktop from any other display other than 17, most of the icons on the desktop don't work. I double-click on them, I get a bouncing mouse hourglass for a while then nothing happens. A couple of icons do work (Mozilla), but the others don't. I can't start Opera, or gproftpd, or even start a console, when I'm connected to a vncserver running on any display other than 17. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Dave PS Mandriva download edn 2007.0
  10. I used webmin, but I'll look for gproFTPd as I prefer guis. Not because I'm lazy (I'm a 44-yr old IT tech brought up on Dos), but because I like the pretty pictures! Vi? Never got on with it. I use pico or nano.
  11. Put the IPs in here: http://www.ripe.net/whois That'll tell you who owns them, and should give you mail contacts for abuse.
  12. Luckily Proftpd configured itself automatically exactly the way I wanted it, which was nice. I struggled a bit trying to figure how to get access to other folders (that weren't in my home dir), until I realised all I had to do was create a couple of symblic links. All working spankingly. Thanks for your help. Hope you get on well with 2007. When all's said and done, mine's working fine for what I want (ftp & smb server), the niggling things have workarounds, and generally it seems a lot more stable and efficient than previous releases.
  13. Hi ianw1974 Thanks for that. Yes, easyurpmi worked splendidly. Although I am fairly comfortable in a console, I still get nervous when a process is whizzing past the screen and I don't quite know what it's doing. :D The wizards section is actually in System/Configuration/Network Services, but despite successfully installing drakwizard, no ftp server option has appeared. However, a lot more options now appear in Software Management. Urpmi proftpd worked fine too, thanks. Now I'm going to have to plough through user guides to get it configured the hard way! I must say having been with Mandrake/Mandriva since about version 8, I'm not impressed with 2007. Although it's a lot more "user-friendly" than previous versions, a lot of things seem to be broken. Stuff like these problems with software management, and (as reported on a previous post here) the fact that the version of SWAT installed doesn't work. Oh and Mandriva's implementation of Webmin had some errors in it too - the modules for Bootup & Shutdown services, and Samba, weren't configured out of the box. Or maybe it's just me. Oh, yes, and java's not enabled on it either.
  14. I've recently done a vanilla install of Mandriva 2007. I decided to try and set up an ftp server, but proftp doesn't show up as an installable option in Software Management. When I installed Mandriva I chose the copy CDs to drive option, and I've even search the media folder and found no RPMs with proftp in the filename. I've downloaded all the rpms I could find from a Mandriva 2007 mirror, but am unable to install these because each one I try won't install because it says it's missing dependencies, and then lists all the others (like proftp-mod-ldap, or proftp-anonymous). Although I primarily use kde I am ok at command-line navigating and editing. Is there any file I can edit or view to see why proftp is not coming up as an installable option? It isn't installed either, as a locate search for "proftp" only shows modules listed under webmin.
  15. I'm not the only one. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/sh...ad.php?t=222063 http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=10723 http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/sh...ead.php?t=51094
  16. Hi there No, I have a root password. Root also has a samba password (using smbpasswd -a, natch), as does the user dave. I've had this server through many incarnations of Mandrake, for about the last 3 years, and since it is an integral part of my LAN it would be practically impossible for me to do anything without access to root. I also set security to standard and bolt things down tight using shorewall. This has never happened to me before, but a quick google on "401 Bad Authorization" shows that other people have been having this problem for at least the last 3 years. Unfortunately none of this hits has provided an answer. Changing root password doesn't do it either. EDIT - nor does removing and reinstalling SWAT. I suspect it's some kind of authorisation error. Since my workstations are Windoze XP, I've got encrypt passwords = yes in smb.conf. Perhaps SWAT is having problems with this.
  17. Hi all I've recently installed 2007 for the first time from scratch. I'm a very lazy user so I rely heavily on Webmin (though I can navigate & edit command-line). This version has installed Webmin 1.290, and the Bootup & Shutdown module of the System tab only shows two buttons - Bootup & Shutdown! The list of startup services is missing. Webmin was installed as part of the installation process. I did try to removed 1.290 and install 1.300 from webmin.com, but that made things even worse (hardly any of the modules worked). Luckily going back to 1.290 fixed things. Has anyone else noticed this? Can anyone give me some hints on how to get this module configured? EDIT: It's alright. Sussed it. Filled in the correct paths in the module and works now.
  18. Hi all New to the forum. Please excuse me if this has been covered before, I've done a search but couldn't find anything. Due to a HDD crash I've recently reinstalled my box to Mandriva 2007, totally from scratch. Previously I ran 2006 for about the last year, and 9.2 before that. I use the box as a file server for a home Windows LAN, so the first thing I always get up and running is Samba, and I usually configure it through SWAT. This time I can't log into SWAT. I didn't set up the services myself, but let the box set everything up during installation as usual. SWAT runs fine from localhost:901 or from webmin but does not allow me to get past the logon screen. Only two usernames exist on the box (root and "dave") but SWAT says both are incorrect. Both these usernames have samba passwords (same as the linux ones). Root doesn't exist as a local user on the Windows workstations, but Dave does, and Dave is connecting fine to the samba shares on the box. Luckily the Samba module in webmin is still working, and I know enough about command line editing to get an smb.conf file configured! :) Can anyone give me any clues as to why I can't logon with root, or how I can log on with "dave" instead? If it helps, below is the contents of /etc/xinetd.d/swat: # default: off # description: SWAT is the Samba Web Admin Tool. Use swat \ # to configure your Samba server. To use SWAT, \ # connect to port 901 with your favorite web browser. service swat { disable = no port = 901 socket_type = stream wait = no only_from = 127.0.0.1 192.168.0.5 user = root server = /usr/sbin/swat log_on_failure += USERID } cheers Dave
