  1. For years, I've used Bastille. It's a frontend to iptables like almost all Linux firewalls and so does all the usual firewalling chores like IP mask, NAT, etc. The difference is it's much more than just a firewall. Bastille is a comprehensive system-hardening security tool with an easy to configure, highly informative interface. I consider Bastille indispensible and install it on every Linux installation I do. There's just nothing else like it. Anyone who takes system security seriously should check it out.

Bastille not working on Mandriva 2007 yet, or ever?

    Pitty, looks great!

  2. When bootup stops after hostname, hit reset on your computer, it will then reboot, and boot up fully this time.
That's not only drastic, but also a very, very bad idea. You're better off hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del to attempt to send the computer into reboot mood. A hard reboot like that while the computer is trying to start services and doing various things can make your situation even worse.

Agree it`s a bad idea, but it might hold a clue as to what the problem is. The fact that it works on second boot attempt.

  3. Krusader has excellent directory sync facilities

    Krusader Synchronizer

This function compares the left and the right panel directories and shows the difference between them. After selecting some options and the Compare function you can synchronize the files and directories. One panel could be an FTP server. Don't forget the Compare by content option if the file size stays equal. Choose Commands->Synchronize Directories or Ctrl+Y to start this feature. The colors are configurable.

  4. GAIM specifically because (a) that's what I'm used to (in actual fact, I'm thinking of moving over to KMess), but more importantly (B) because it has a debug window that I can get information from. Kopete suffers from what I assume is the same problem, but handily has no indication of what it's doing.

I suspect that my problem isn't to do with GAIM specifically, but rather either MSN or my internet connection (I'm on a university ethernet, so odd things go on between my computer and the outside world). I was just hoping that someone out there would be able to give me any ideas of what might be going on.

Anyone actually able to help me here?

Looks like it is a problem with your internet connection, I remain connected to MSN all day everyday no problem using either Gaim or Kopete or amsn

  5. By the way, you shouldn't have to reboot after installing new software! Just run it! ;)

You can make a shortcut on your desktop, on your menu bar, or on your kicker panel to run Skype - just point it at the executable /usr/bin/skype

Also if you find you have problems with sound after first call :-

Go into your skype-install/sound directory and rename or delete the hangup.wav file.

  6. in Kmix, have you selected the microphone to record mode? it varies depending on your soundcard, on mine i need to have microhone set to record, and capture slider all the way to the top, also activate mic boost

  7. var/log/messages shows same as dmesg

Oct 11 12:41:20 localhost kernel: usb 2-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

Oct 11 12:42:26 localhost kernel: usb 2-1: USB disconnect, address 4

But I think I found the device, it`s in /dev/bus/usb/002/011 the last part /011 increments each time I press hotsync.

Thanks for help so far Gowata, Ianw1974 :)

  8. Hi there, been using kpilot to hotsync Palm Tunsten E2 with Kontact since version 10.0 of Mandriva.

All of a sudden, in Mandriva 2007, it no longer works.

The setting I have always used in Kpilot device settings is /dev/ttyusb0

Interestingly I notice that there is no longer ttyusb* in /dev or /dev/usb

    Has something changed?

    Mike
