  1. Hi,

    Just a quick question,

does anyone know what logic is applied to dual core cpu usage under Linux.

For example, I am right now encoding a video using avidemux, gkrellm is showing each core using 70 percent cpu, this is good, because its fast, yet allows me to use the pc for other things without slowdown.

just wondered what logic denotes using 70 percent of each core when using avidemux.

  2. Many of you Cedega users will notice that most games wont play in full screen mode while you have 3D Desktop/Compiz/XGL/Beryl loaded.

Googling around there`s plenty suggestions on how to solve this problem by loading a second instance of X display, some say that a future Kernel update will solve this problem too.

A great workaround is to use Beryl, and Beryl manager instead of Compiz.

Beryl manager gives you a small tray icon with easy access to switch between full 3D/composite desktop manager and Kwin (Kde windows manager) without you having to logout or restart x server.

So, you simply switch from Beryl to Kwin, load you game, play and when finished simply switch back to Beryl.

Here`s a video to show how easy it is.

    Hope this helps someone,

  3. Cheers for info, most Linux users are not gamers, including me, so rightly so, I just like playing a few games via Cedega, Hallf Life 2, Battlefield 1942, Battlefield 2 and GTA Vice City. Oh and Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 hehhe.

    Nothing there needing SLI

But if someone programs full SLI support, can only be a plus.

  4. Exactly ;)

Just one CD, install the OS and you're done! :D

Couple of questions, someone might know the answers.

The board supports SLI mode, where you can insert 2 identical graphics cards and link them via supplied "Gold fingers" cable. It say`s in manual that its only supported in Windows. Not that I want to use this feature, just curious if it works in Linux.

Next one is tricky to explain due to not knowing the correct terminology.....

In windows, there is a program that makes both cores work at same time, or manages them to work more efficient, i suspect this is built into Linux kernel? as it seems pretty efficient to me viewing the cpu usage of the cores in gkrellm

  5. Cool

I'm toying with one using an AMD processor, nvidia chipset and my nvidia video card, as it seems the best combo for upgrading my machine. I'd use an Intel board, if it was for business use though, but depending on cost comparison.

Go for it, must say I`m very impressed with the speed of this machine now, and way everything just worked, no need for the 70 million cd`s that came with the parts for windows heheh.

  6. Hi there, my PC running Mandiva has finally died (Motherboard Problem) so it`s time for a new one, may aswell go for complete new system (apart from case).

I`ve selected to base it around AMD Dual Core 4200 AM2 Nforce4 Chipset with PCI-E graphics, Using the hard disk with Mandriva 2007.1 already installed from my old PC.

Would be a nightmare if Mandriva wasnt compatable with the hardware, what are the chances?

  7. Yes, same here. Initially had no Entrance option in Display manager setup, so installed it vie urpmi entrance (including the dependencies).

With Entrance now selected as display manager, I get tty login.

Would be cool to see it working :)

  8. I did the following, "Open MCC, go to....Hardware then........Configure 3D Desktop effects." As soon as I clicked on "Configure 3D Desktop effects" I was immediately logged out of KDE. never even saw what was supposed to be in the dropdown. I tried selecting 3D from the login prompt, but was then prompted for the root password which I supplied. Thereupon, it went back to the login screen again. Guess I'll have to pass on Metisse.

EDIT: This was after an upgrade from 2007.0 to 2007.1 and am running dual monitors.

Had the same identical problem, solution for me was to ditch nvidia dkms rpm and manually install the nvidia driver.

    Hope that helps.

  9. Hi there,

I was performing an update via :-

    urpmi.update -a

    urpmi --auto-select

During the update I had a power failure, and now my rpm database appears to be corrupt.

    Preparing... #############################################

    1/5: gtk+2.0 #############################################

    rpmdb: PANIC: Invalid argument

error: db4 error(-30974) from dbcursor->c_put: DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery

    rpm --rebuilddb

rpmdb: PANIC: fatal region error detected; run recovery

error: db4 error(-30974) from dbenv->open: DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery

    Any help most welcome.

  10. Hi there,

I have recently completed such a project, I`ll detail how I achieved it using Mandriva 2007, it may be helpfull :)

I used a Hauppage WinTV TV tuner card.

Connected the VCR to the WinTV card via scart to composite cable, you could also use a RF cable.

The WinTV and composite is more than good enough to capture from VHS.

To record the composite signal :-

mencoder tv:// -tv driver=v4l:input=1:width=720:height=406:volume=80 -of avi -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg2video:vbitrate=4000 -oac lavc -lavcopts acodec=ac3:abitrate=96 -o record.avi -endpos 119:00

Note the resolution in this example is 720x406 which is for a widescreen movie. Depending on your PC specs, you might not be able to capture at this resolution. 640x480 is good for 4:3 VHS.

The 119:00 is just the length of time you wish to record, remove this part if you want to record forever (using ctrl c to stop)

I used mpeg2video codec because it uses much less CPU than for example XVID and also it`s closer to the end format of DVD.

Convert the recording to DVD using the excellent ManDVD application. It can edit the original video, create menu`s, chapters, backgrounds, aswell as allowing you to burn the final project to DVD directly from within ManDVD, externally via K3b or save as an ISO file.

Hope that helps, I have converted 50+ VHS tapes to DVD this way.
