  1. Hi, well, actually im more of a strategy kind of guy... :D Lately i dont play much, but one reason is being in Linux... Some games i used to play and still do from time to time: Civ2, Civ3. Hearts of Iron Combat Mission Superpower Diablo 2 .... cant think any other really addictive right now but im sure im missing some. Had some dissapointment with: Warcraft3 Age of kings (age of empires2) C&C Generals Well thats about it... I could argue for hours why W3, AoK or C&C are no way what they used to be, but in short, they went for graphics instead of going deeper into strategy or tactics... I will look for Majesty and read about it, it sounds interesting ;) There is a native version for Linux, i assume.
  2. A lot! Again, a lot! the structure is adapted to standars and/or user commodity. Also, pkgs are removed and added according to whats going on in the community, A couple of years ago you didnt had all the beauty things you have now! I think i dont understand this last lines, but i will try: Some pkgs arent compatible with others that are outdated, by using a LFS system, you dont only know what should work, but where is everything. If you have to use a pkg, then you have to configure it, compile it and install it, if you dont have a dependency, you will get an error at the config stage. You will know what works and what not, when you know if the dependencies are met. Anyway, the Book, is that, a guide to make a Linux system, from scratch, without all the crap other distros install and thats innecesary. Although its a nice thing to have, its pretty much a pain in the ass to upgrade and install pkgs, mainly due to dependency-hell and the issues regarding how to uninstall a pkgs. I dont know if this helped.... as a summary, LFS is a great way to learn how to handle source software, know the Linux structure, how the system works, tweak some files to get the system "customized" and some other stuff... but i dont think its a good idea to use it as main system, unless you have lots of time free and a broadband connection (or, your PC has a broadband and lots of free time with a little automatition ;))
  3. Yeah i did. sorry! As English its not my native language, i might misunderstand some things, hope i wasnt to rude with my answer, coz i didnt meant to. I didnt know about a name called Majesty, and i dont know whats about, if you tell me a bit more, i might get interested... ;) I cant believe it runs bad on a GF4 Ti4200 coupled with a 1.2 Athlon... i would doble check some things!!! I do believe it wont run flawlessly but not crawling! Anyway, what i really want to get working is Counter Strike or Day of Defeat... that would be real nice, though i dont have any free time for now to try it. As soon as i can i will post something about this. About the demo, i would ask someone else to download it --a friend with cable or dsl--, i cant spend 8 hours downloading just a demo of a game... its just not me! Thanks for going deeper in your explination.
  4. LFS 5.0 Pre2 released... some changes... getting closer....!!
  5. mmmm... How can i answer that... Oh, I know! I would search in the manual if i had the game, but as i dont i cant... Besides, manuals always say (sorry for the word) shit. Their specs are always or to low or to high... the best way to know is to ask someone how has it, at least that was what i thought...
  6. Or you could download from CVS and compile yourself.... Ofcourse this is not as easy as a RPM but, its with-out-charge. There where some sites that had RPMs for WineX but, Transmeta emailed them to put down this as it was bad for their bussiness... <cursing>transmeta</cursing>
  7. If i didnt missread "or read wrong" ;) sometime ago, Half-Life2 was going to be ported to Linux, if not at the same time as the launch for windows, soon after... same as doom3 i dont think that stealing the code will help in anything, but also i cant find a bad thing... as i dont use MP servers wich could abuse of possible hacks. also, i think there will be some trouble following this regarding legal issues, as it seems the source was stolen, its possible that its for sale or something... I dont think someone would stole it for nothing.... needless to say that i dont think it was stolen as Gabe says in his letter... its a D.A.M.N. S.T.U.P.I.D. argument. And if its true.... then screw them for using Outlook...
  8. Talking about UT2003 and machine specs... A friend with windows and a Athlon 1.3ghz and 392mb ram and a GeForce2MX run it not that good... I have a p3 550@773 and 256mb and a GF2MX, do you think the Linux version would run "decently" on it?? I dont want fancy-graphics... but also dont want to see a big pixel simulating a bot.
  9. Zeta got reviewed at ZetaNews... It seems it has quite lot of improvements over BeOS 5.1 (a devel version, final stable was 5.0) Among other things, full support for the newest hardware... Its seems its much faster in multimedia applications and that got some real good eye-candy. I think i'll give it a try when the final version comes out. 10. Hey, the easiest way for me is to run it from Gkrellm. You got to configure wvdial with wvdialconf and the manually fix the pertinating files, /etc/resolv.conf and check the files at /etc/ppp/ To make Gkrellm dial, just go to Configuration, under Built in, the Net section, enable the timer button and then set the start to wvdial and the stop to killall wvdial this way, when you click, dials, and when you click it again, hangs. If the explanation is to bad, PM and i will make it better... :)

Sorry for breaking into the Site-Admin/Moderator thread! Thanks for the links... real nice.
  12. uhmmm... i´ll try that later... i really dont know if i want that thing to work!! ;)
  13. Hi, I think you didnt understand the message ;) I will explain my self a bit better. The command you name (tar XVFZ) its for eXtract, Verbose, File, gZipped (the caps are for each option after tar). Thats why it doesnt work with multiple files, because i dont want to extract a single File, but several so i have to use a list or other method wich i dont know. when i say, now its not working with tar, refer to this: hope someone gets what i mean and has a solution. unzip '*.zip' but ussing tar instead of a zip file: tar xvz '*.gz'
  14. Allright tyme, thanks for the input. I knew it was on Incoming, and was waiting until they move it to unofficial or official so i would save the "problem" (im lazy!) of downloading each pkg manually and install them. Actually now that i think about it, i dont understand why anyone hasnt moved it yet... XFce4 was in incoming for less than 2 days... Guess i´ll have to ask there... anyway, if i dont get a positive answer (moved at least in the next two weeks) i will start downloading manually... ps. couldn find a use for pacman -U till now, thanks! Now, going back to my books, have an exam in the upcoming week.
  15. ;) i still have to try Gnome, i guess as soon as 2.4 is in Arch unoffcial repos i will give a try. for what ive seen looks pretty good... but i like fast loading desktops, thats why i used fluxbox (yeah yeah its a WM).... for now, im giving a try at this one and its pretty good but not so fast.
  16. Nice... i saw somewhere that MSI is bundling a A64 3200+ with its Neo motherboard for about 420 or 450 bucks... not too bad....
  17. Hi, good news, got it working in Arch, i will post some screenshots as soon as i can in the show off your desktop thread.... im glad you got everything working again and decided to give xfce4 a second chance ;)
  18. Slackware 9.1 is now officially released. Its seems brings cutting edge soft eh? GCC 3.2.3, GNOME 2.4.0, KDE 3.1.4, ALSA, and Kernel 2.4.22. (kernel 2.6 ready) check it [w]www.slackware.org[/w] it seems that for download you need bitTorrent as it wont be in ftp for now.[/url]
  19. mmm... good point forgot that one. i will have to check again a couple of things again it seems...hehe... does anyone know how much does a 3200+ cost? not in the net, but in real life?
  20. Ok, i see. But a see you say Gentoo pkging system... bla bla... and then confirms, you use Gentoo, and i really dont know how it works, so i dont think it will break everything for me... any way, i prettend to try it in LFS, Arch or MDK, as soon as i can find the time to compile in LFS or the pkgs for any of the other two. ohh, and... i dont use Gnome ;) i just *box anyway, you took some confidence from me... i was just going to try the latest pkgs for Arch...mmmm.... hope you get to solve the fubar. thanks for the input.
  21. mmmm.... i dont know why.. but now its not working with tar... please help? i want to unpack lots of skinz for GKrellm and i wont be doing that manually, also tryed using a list: tar xvz --from-file skins didnt worked... dont know why either...
  22. :) i knew you would post something! hehe... im sorry, but...mmm... i must say that i do not know what fubar is... i read it several times, but never knew (neither thought mattered much) what was.... now i would like to know what that means... i think i will take a look at the tips...
  23. Yep! XFce 4.0 is out: Link: www.xfce.org If someone gets to try it before me.... POST SOMETHING! ;) [/u]
  24. Usually if i use more than one desktop is for doing something that needs the full screen for it self and also that allows me from time to time to go to the other and do some other stuff, but mostly i shade my windows... works pretty good. I dont think your "direction" was bad, about your organization i would say give it a try, its mostly a personal thing so noone can tell you what will fit best for you. TRY EVERYTHING! (love Linux!)
