i am really confused. it now crashes less frequently, when i leave the computer for long periods of time. sometimes when i go to sleep. my laptop is pretty much on 24/7. at first i thought it was a heat problem as i switched of ACPI and Laptop Mode but then i raised the laptop to give it extra airflow. these are the last few lines of my log. please help. TIA

another tool if u choose to use it is Gparter. its a non distructive NTFS resizer that runs on Linux, and is on a Live Boot CD. uses gnome interface. very handy

Mandriva Hanging [solved]
praveenmarkandu replied to praveenmarkandu's topic in Laptops and Portable Devices
i did some searching through mandrivaclub forum...which is not that great a forum but found someones "solution" went into /etc/acpi/events/lm_lid.txt which was this event=button[ /]lid action=/etc/acpi/actions/lm_lid.sh %e and commented the action by putting # infront of it. AND IT WORKS! no more hanging. however, my wireless dies after awhile when i close the lid. so im going to try to stop the laptop service and see what happens then. -

more problems strike me. this has been going on for awhile. mandriva hangs.... and it does it when im not around at my computer. i close my laptop lid and walk away and when i come back maybe an hour or so later it would have hung.... or it could be a few hours. im not an expert but i was thinking it would have to do with my Laptop battery monitor that doesnt work (cause it doesnt tell me when i have no battery left) or maybe azureus. mandriva generates a crash file... but how do i read it? please advise. TIA [moved from Software by spinynorman]

thanks again ian. everything is back to normal... well more to back to square one. any idea on how do add a networked printer which is on a windows machine. or point me to a tutorial. cause i dont understand all the CUPS things...
-
thanks ianw1974. saving me as usual :) cheers but i still havent got CUPS working. when i open Set up the Printer(s),the print job queues under MCC it opens up Printerdrake which says and that just hangs there :( much help appreciated.

i seem to run into a lot of problems. maybe cause im just getting into something very unfamiliar. anyway. the new problem is this i was trying to get some home networking going. everything seemed okay with samba. but when i tried to install a networked printer printerdrake hung. fair enough. then i closed it at started MCC up again and now was able to use the printer menu. i played around with a few settings (to be honest im not sure what. im sorry).... still couldnt get my networked printer to work so i rebooted. and thats when it hangs. the verbose boot screen is on forever. im using windows now :( help me dig me out of a grave. TIA

main question solved. thank you. wouldnt install it at first until i did urpmi --clean :) learn something new everyday what about my slow graphics?
-
evrything looks fine in KDE :) but things are terrible in Gnome. i cant seem to get a panel so therefore i cant configure how gnome looks or look at the time or even log out. i dont think i did anything to Gnome at all. i wanted to try it cause its supposed to be a simplified desktop (kinda). my icons are still on the desktop though. so i can lauch firefox and what not without using the terminal. please help. TIA edit: oh. and for some reason graphics arent as smooth as windows XP. for example on my blog (in my signature) when i click on a thumbnail the javascript photos should run smoothly but in mandriva its choppy and slow.

thanks for all your help guys. i have installed mplayer succesfully and added the GUI to it so its now gmplayer. but it gives me this i've put a skin in that directory but it cant seem to read it. much help appreciated

hi all. i like linux(especially mandriva)...and i think it will suit me in due time and i could defiantely make the full switch to Linux and dump windows. but i have run into some problems which is the installation of software i've become quite efficient at compiling sources using the ./configure and make commands. i try to keep most of my software in /opt directory (dont ask me why), stuff like LAMPP ,firefox, thunderbird and azureus. but for some things i dont know really where they are installed to when i make them. i just downloaded mplayer to play my wmv files but when i try to launch it from the konsole, it goes it comes up as text in the console rather than launching a GUI like firefox. is there a certain way to install this or am i just missunderstanding the process? this is what i did: 1. untar mplayer 2.move the untared directory to /opt 3. from /opt/mplayer i use the ./configure command 4. then i use the make command 5. and then the make install command 6. lastly i try to run the program by typing ./mplayer ( it launches but not as a GUI) please help. TIA
