  1. [root@localhost ~]# chkconfig --list netplugd netplugd 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off its alredy not running
  2. i am really confused. it now crashes less frequently, when i leave the computer for long periods of time. sometimes when i go to sleep. my laptop is pretty much on 24/7. at first i thought it was a heat problem as i switched of ACPI and Laptop Mode but then i raised the laptop to give it extra airflow. these are the last few lines of my log. please help. TIA
  3. another tool if u choose to use it is Gparter. its a non distructive NTFS resizer that runs on Linux, and is on a Live Boot CD. uses gnome interface. very handy
  4. what a simple solution, laptop-mode solved it. thank you ALL! [solved]
  5. something new i found out: by doing what i did above(commenting the action) i lost the ability to log out after i logged into an account. so i did away with the commenting and now im just stopped using laptop-mode
  6. i did some searching through mandrivaclub forum...which is not that great a forum but found someones "solution" went into /etc/acpi/events/lm_lid.txt which was this event=button[ /]lid action=/etc/acpi/actions/lm_lid.sh %e and commented the action by putting # infront of it. AND IT WORKS! no more hanging. however, my wireless dies after awhile when i close the lid. so im going to try to stop the laptop service and see what happens then.
  7. is there away to keep this suspend turned off? or is it hardcoded into the OS?
  8. i dont really want to suspend or sleep anything. cause i want to keep processing and downloading in the background.
  9. this time happened without azureus... this seems a pretty serious problem... sounds stupid, but i will try not closing the lid
  10. this was exactly what happened. was running kopete and azureus. closed the lid.went away... and it hung Aug 6 21:53:12 localhost kernel: ide: failed opcode was: 0xec Aug 6 21:53:13 localhost kernel: hdb: drive_cmd: status=0x01 { Error } Aug 6 21:53:13 localhost kernel: hdb: drive_cmd: error=0x04 { AbortedCommand } Aug 6 21:53:13 localhost kernel: ide: failed opcode was: 0xec Aug 6 21:53:13 localhost kernel: hdb: drive_cmd: status=0x01 { Error } Aug 6 21:53:13 localhost kernel: hdb: drive_cmd: error=0x04 { AbortedCommand } Aug 6 21:53:13 localhost kernel: ide: failed opcode was: 0xec Aug 6 21:53:13 localhost kernel: hdb: drive_cmd: status=0x01 { Error } Aug 6 21:53:13 localhost kernel: hdb: drive_cmd: error=0x04 { AbortedCommand } Aug 6 21:53:13 localhost kernel: ide: failed opcode was: 0xec Aug 6 21:53:13 localhost kernel: hdb: drive_cmd: status=0x01 { Error } Aug 6 21:53:13 localhost kernel: hdb: drive_cmd: error=0x04 { AbortedCommand } Aug 6 21:53:13 localhost kernel: ide: failed opcode was: 0xec Aug 6 21:53:13 localhost kernel: hdb: drive_cmd: status=0x01 { Error } Aug 6 21:53:13 localhost kernel: hdb: drive_cmd: error=0x04 { AbortedCommand } Aug 6 21:53:13 localhost kernel: ide: failed opcode was: 0xec Aug 6 21:53:13 localhost kernel: hdb: drive_cmd: status=0x01 { Error } Aug 6 21:53:13 localhost kernel: hdb: drive_cmd: error=0x04 { AbortedCommand } Aug 6 21:53:13 localhost kernel: ide: failed opcode was: 0xec Aug 6 21:53:13 localhost kernel: hdb: drive_cmd: status=0x01 { Error } Aug 6 21:53:13 localhost kernel: hdb: drive_cmd: error=0x04 { AbortedCommand } Aug 6 21:53:13 localhost kernel: ide: failed opcode was: 0xec please help me
  11. thanks ianw1974 .....this deserves a [solved]
  12. more problems strike me. this has been going on for awhile. mandriva hangs.... and it does it when im not around at my computer. i close my laptop lid and walk away and when i come back maybe an hour or so later it would have hung.... or it could be a few hours. im not an expert but i was thinking it would have to do with my Laptop battery monitor that doesnt work (cause it doesnt tell me when i have no battery left) or maybe azureus. mandriva generates a crash file... but how do i read it? please advise. TIA [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  13. [root@localhost ~]# uname -a Linux localhost 2.6.12-12mdk #1 Fri Sep 9 18:15:22 CEST 2005 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.73GHz unknown GNU/Linux [root@localhost ~]# rpm -qa | grep kernel kernel-source-2.6-2.6.12-22mdk kernel-2.6.12.12mdk-1-1mdk
  14. it says it failed to load DKMS to the kernel
  15. below is an attachment of what i see. oddly enough i can see the hidden shared folders of the other windows machine and if i type in the password i can go around deleting files :o i can view and edit the shares properly but no printers are there
  16. [root@localhost ~]# glxinfo | grep direct direct rendering: No OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect [root@localhost ~]# glxgears 698 frames in 5.0 seconds = 139.597 FPS 679 frames in 5.0 seconds = 135.444 FPS 686 frames in 5.0 seconds = 137.099 FPS 668 frames in 5.0 seconds = 133.476 FPS 686 frames in 5.0 seconds = 137.045 FPS 674 frames in 5.0 seconds = 134.800 FPS Broken pipe [root@localhost ~]# i get this. i guess direct rendering it my problem. i got my drivers by using urpmi dkms ati but im now searching for the rpm driver direct from ATIs website
  17. thanks again ian. everything is back to normal... well more to back to square one. any idea on how do add a networked printer which is on a windows machine. or point me to a tutorial. cause i dont understand all the CUPS things...
  18. thanks ianw1974. saving me as usual :) cheers but i still havent got CUPS working. when i open Set up the Printer(s),the print job queues under MCC it opens up Printerdrake which says and that just hangs there :( much help appreciated.
  19. i seem to run into a lot of problems. maybe cause im just getting into something very unfamiliar. anyway. the new problem is this i was trying to get some home networking going. everything seemed okay with samba. but when i tried to install a networked printer printerdrake hung. fair enough. then i closed it at started MCC up again and now was able to use the printer menu. i played around with a few settings (to be honest im not sure what. im sorry).... still couldnt get my networked printer to work so i rebooted. and thats when it hangs. the verbose boot screen is on forever. im using windows now :( help me dig me out of a grave. TIA
  20. main question solved. thank you. wouldnt install it at first until i did urpmi --clean :) learn something new everyday what about my slow graphics?
  21. evrything looks fine in KDE :) but things are terrible in Gnome. i cant seem to get a panel so therefore i cant configure how gnome looks or look at the time or even log out. i dont think i did anything to Gnome at all. i wanted to try it cause its supposed to be a simplified desktop (kinda). my icons are still on the desktop though. so i can lauch firefox and what not without using the terminal. please help. TIA edit: oh. and for some reason graphics arent as smooth as windows XP. for example on my blog (in my signature) when i click on a thumbnail the javascript photos should run smoothly but in mandriva its choppy and slow.
  22. thanks for all your help guys. i have installed mplayer succesfully and added the GUI to it so its now gmplayer. but it gives me this i've put a skin in that directory but it cant seem to read it. much help appreciated
  23. hi all. i like linux(especially mandriva)...and i think it will suit me in due time and i could defiantely make the full switch to Linux and dump windows. but i have run into some problems which is the installation of software i've become quite efficient at compiling sources using the ./configure and make commands. i try to keep most of my software in /opt directory (dont ask me why), stuff like LAMPP ,firefox, thunderbird and azureus. but for some things i dont know really where they are installed to when i make them. i just downloaded mplayer to play my wmv files but when i try to launch it from the konsole, it goes it comes up as text in the console rather than launching a GUI like firefox. is there a certain way to install this or am i just missunderstanding the process? this is what i did: 1. untar mplayer 2.move the untared directory to /opt 3. from /opt/mplayer i use the ./configure command 4. then i use the make command 5. and then the make install command 6. lastly i try to run the program by typing ./mplayer ( it launches but not as a GUI) please help. TIA
