I do not have 10.0, but it should have no problem using the ethernet connection. Using the network portion of drake config (configure your computer in the 9.2 menu), you can configure the eth0 connection

I am running 9.2, and I want to see the verbose boot information as a default. I would prefer just a basic screen, the way it was way back whenever. When you have youngsters in the house who may not always be inclined to shut the system down properly, it is a good idea to pay attention the info floating by on startup. In particular, recognize that few seconds available to start a disk system verification. I have edited the global.config file in /etc/bootsplash/themes/Mandrake/config to show no logo, no change, Also, init file in /etc/sysconfig to show BOOTUP=verbose......no change, I also tried bootsplash file in etc/sysconfig to say no bootsplash. Still not what I want. The only difference I see is that I now ONLY have a bootsplash screen, no moving status bar or note to hit etc for verbose. I must be missing something. Any ideas? Thanks.

I am not a MDK 'pro', but the I/O, IRQ, and DMA info should be available when you are in windoze. The control panel should have a system icon that lists the hardware. This was available under the system 'device' tab in '98. I am not familiar with later versions. The properties for that device will list the info you need. The properties are available with a RIGHT click while on that device.

Just to close this out....I went back to MDK 9.2. All works fine now. As an aside, 9.2 must be the best OS I have ever used. I liked 10 also, but there seems to be some issues a novice such as myself can't resolve.

I placed the .so file as suggested...no difference. The links that I referenced above both currently work in windoze, and it is every rm file I try, and they work in 9.2....so it must be a mdk 10 issue. Bummer. Thanks anyway.

I made the move to MDK 10, and I have a vexing issue. When I try to listen to a streaming sound file that is real media, there is no sound if I have the realplayer selected as the application in Mozilla or firefox. Never was this an issue in any previous versions. I am currently using a Palm M515 as an essential companion. I use MDK 9.2 at home, and windoze 2k/Lotus Notes at work. I am able to use the palm handheld to sync my address books and such between home and work. Life is good. However, a few weeks ago, my palm contracted SUDS....a long story...but I am forced to either return it to palm to fix, or do a strange dance with different cables every time I want to sync. I am extremely busy, and I prefer to use multiple cables at home, the office, and on the road rather than go without my substitute for an adequate long-term memory. My employer will get me a new PDA....but they will only supply an Axiom (or something like that) from Dell. They must get hockey tickets or something, as my IT people are not very aware as to why this is so. Aside from my aversion to anything additional that uses windows....is there anything I need to be concerned about? Will this thing sync to MDK? Should I just buy a new palm on my own? Hi John, I can read a little :) MDK is a good distro, but all people considering the distro should be aware of its shortcomings. I am sure that this board is a good forum for their education. From my past experience, MDK is not a 'best practices' company. Based upon my past experience, and this unfortunate's story, I surmised that MDK did not wait until they shipped to charge that poor guy's account. This is not the practice of a sound company, and is risky. I have learned from past experience that MDK does not have their customers at the top of their mind. (BTW, nice picture)

And I bet MDK did not wait until they shipped to charge your account. That is the only reason (up to now) that I won't pay any money to MDK....they do not have their customers at the top of their mind. They are only a revenue stream in their mind. I hope that you did not have too many over-draft fees.

This is a very interesting thread. I was talking to a young engineer at work just today; the subject was Linux (I mention it every chance I get). After demonstrating the PCLinuxOS run-time CD...the question was, "What is the down-side?". Thinking back to MDK 8.1....my 1st venture into Linux, I told him to be sure to only play around with Linux on a system that is not critical, and therefore he can be free to experiment. Be prepared to loose the whole system.....then he can rebuild it, having learned something in the process. I feel that most windoze-oriented people do not tend to experiment with their PC. That is too bad. This is the process most people learned about computers and their software years ago. I loved DOS 3.1. It was a hobbyist environment, and users were not afraid to try new things. With windoze, their new users don't even know what a file extension in windoze is! It is a steady "dumbing-down" of the windoze computer user community. I am glad I found Linux...I hope to live long enough to learn all its innards.

I have an ATI all-in wonder pro....I monkeyed around and got the TV tuner working in MDK 9.2 using the AVview application and ati2 video files. However, I could not get video capture working. Frankly, I did not spend much time at it and I don't use it, because the quality is not up to par with the windoze suite of apps made for the ati board. That is one of the two reasons that I keep 'doze as a dual boot.

I also love Nero. With winex installed, I have successfully burned cds in mdk9.2/kde using the windoze nero package. But I also like k3b....its nero-like

The auto launch feature is something I always shut-off whan I was using windoze....I find it annoying. But mounting can be an issue w/ supermount

I am not familiar with XP, but I was able to reload '98 and recover my LILO menu by simply inserting the 1st MDK CD and selecting 'rescue', I believe it was called

Regarding mickeysoft-only webpages, find a contact link that maybe the company (other than the brain-dead IT people) will see, and send an email that tells them that, unfortunately, you cannot participate in whatever they consider important because their IT people are, in fact, brain-dead. I recognize that this forum is probably about installation PROBLEMS, but I am compelled to relate my new outlook on things. My windoze install was trashed, and being a bit smarter about the use of my machine, I decided to repartition and reinstall the whole thing, MDK9.1 and win 98. I repartitioned my drives using Linux, giving Linux a greater share of the drives. Win install gave me a warning that it did not like the config of the partitions, so I decided to redo it using fdisk....man is that SLOW! Then I spent CONSIDERABLE time reloading win98, the driver disks for my monitor, printer, scanner, usb driver, camera, inet card, smart-card reader.....rebooting everytime....sometimes twice.......then I said WTF! I had not even started installing apps! That is as far as I got. It took me about 45 minutes to load Mandrake 9.1 with all the office and Inet functionality I need, and another 30 minutes to automatically update all the packages to the latest available (DSL is sweet). Of course, with proper planning all of the existing user files were available immediately. All of this easier approach was for free, all with little hassle. I admit that I have loaded MDK 9.1 several times in the past, but I have done the MS reload many times since DOS 3.1 and as of win 98, it ain't getting any better. I must see what I need to do to get the video capture working in MDK, then I will probably only visit windoze once a year for 'old-times sake.'

I saw that part about using rescue in the faq section, but the MDK guide is pretty specific that I need to make a boot disc, so I was leery. Thanks for the lilo backup idea.

Well, I now use MDK 9.1 much more that Windoze, so I figured that I would reload windoze on a smaller partition, making more disc space available for MDK. Knowing that this would monkey with my mbr (on hda), I found that I can either make a boot disc to restore lilo on the mbr by booting from that disc and issuing /sbin/lilo, or make a copy of the mbr to restore. I have /home reasonably well backed-up in case I get in other trouble otherwise. However, I cannot make a boot disc, it won''t fit on a 1.44 mb drive......so i figured that I would just do the other and make a copy of the mbr.... I put a blank floppy in fd0 , and as root I enter: # dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/fd0/mbr.bin bs=512 count=1 I'm not certain what this means, but page 161 of my starter guide for MDK9.1 tells me to do this. But it does not work. I get: dd: opening `/dev/fd0/mbr.bin': Not a directory As a result. Anybody have any other ideas? Thanks.

....on an old, old PC. I use MDK 9.1 on my main desktop, and I want to get my kids into the 'Linux' world. I have a couple of old PCs that they use in their rooms, one is a P133MMX with 128Mb Ram running Win '98. I loaded MDK 9.2 onto it to test drive the new version (BTW, I will stick w/ 9.1 on my machine for now). 9.2 loads and runs painfully slow on the p133....and my daughter is using an old 486 with 4Mb ram as a web-surfer. It runs Win '95 ok, but I want to get Linux on it also. I am certain that an old distro with a simple desktop manager would run better than '95. I have a boxed set of MDK 8.2 CDs, would it be OK on the P133? Any ideas on what the 486 would need for an acceptable performance? (I am not cheap, I just can't see throwing out a couple of PCs that work well. I intend to use the 486 as a print server or something eventually) Thanks in advance!
