  1. My system doesn't have :- 5. Set the value of nglayout.initialpaint.delay to "0" so I just set the other 4 values. YES.....seems much better. Ebuyer is usually quite slow.........now wizz. Hope the improvement lasts. Thanks
  2. Ok I have them..many thanks. It might be worth noting that if you have created any subdirectories within your Inbox they are stored as hidden directories i.e. with the dot as the first character, in my case .Linux and .Keep, within the kmail subdirectory. Solved...thank you
  3. Thanks...I'll give this a try.
  4. I'm putting together a new PC and am in the process of moving my data from the old to the new. But I cannot find how to move my old emails (I'm using Kmail). I've tried the export/import option without success. Any ideas. Thanks
  5. Thank you jeanmm. I've deleted all the files in the 2 directories but left the directories. I hated that msg so am very pleased to get rid of it...thanks
  6. Julie The references mentioned in the sticky and note above are a good place to start. I too have a Speedtouch 330 and had trouble with the microcode. I made the mistake of assuming that as my modem is black then the microcode for black modems was correct.. wrong. Eventually I tried a microcode file called rev4fw.zip, which worked first time. Don't forget that it needs to be copied into your Speedtouchconf???? directory before you run the script. Details are on Steve Parker's site. (see sticky). It also seems to be a good idea to clear out any Mandriva installed Speedtouch software before you proceed. Steve does mention this. Thanks Julie I have it working in Mandriva 2005 & 2006. Regards
  7. Clitheroe Please note that I am a newbie so take the following as you wish. I too had problems getting my Speedtouch 330 working. I use a USB connection, I assume yours is the same. The only system I have managed to get it to work with is Mandriva 2005 or 2006. Currently I use 2006. I tried Susie, Debian, Damn small linux, Fedora.....etc. all no go. I downloaded the tar from Steve Parker's site (speedtouchconf-?????.tar.gz. This unzipped OK as per instructions from Steve. As for the microcode part you have to go elsewhere. After much messing around with the wrong files I tried with rev4fw.zip ( links from Steve's site I believe). But before I ran the install script again I followed Steve's advice and:- 1.Cleaned my installation by running his remove script ( I had run install several times already so needed a clean sheet ) 2 Went into "Remove Software" option from the System/Configuration/Packaging menu and removed the Mandriva installed speedtouch routines. You may well have some installed as well and they just get in the way, remove them. 3 Rebooted and started again. (Make sure you have the microcode file copied into the speedtouchconf???? directory that gets created after you unzip the tar. See Steve'sinstructions) hey presto after this installation it worked. This time I got beyond the error message section of Steve's script and the green lights flashed for about 1 min as they are supposed to. And I was online. I too had previously had these error messages (235,245 etc) and had written to Steve for advice. His advice was as above. I seem to remember that these error messages indicate microcode problems, but I could be wrong as I didn't write it all down. I put my problem down to the microcode I had originally used. It was the wrong one. Unfortunately as my Speedtouch is coloured black I went for the microcode for black boxes...wrong! I needed the code for the grey modems! I believe that you can query you modem to find out which type it is, but I have no information as to how this is done. My advice is don't go by its colour. Since I have got it working I have been very pleased with it. Steve Parker was a great help and replies to emails almost by return, very kind of him. I had almost given up with Linux as a result of my experience since I had a link running from XP with 10 mins of getting the Speedtouch out of the box. But, I'm very pleased that I persevered, through the problem I learnt a little and best of all got involved with the forum. I cannot remember the last time I used XP online!...that must say something. So please persevere, it can be done, myself and others can testify to that. And I don't forget that I am a newbie. I'm off line for a break over the next week so will not be able to reply further just at the moment. I trust the above is helpful. Steve's site is http://steve-parker.org/speedtouchconf/ where you will find instructions, links to files (tars etc) and some example printouts of his scripts running. I printed the lot out to have as reference. Kindest regards Laidback
  8. I didn't know this so am grateful to read the info. However, unless you know the exact name of the files you don't get a response, and they don't appear to be obvious, i.e. my Acrobat reader isn't called Acrobat anything, it's acroread. Using the * wild card doesn't work, with or without quotes.
  9. Well folks, I'm pleased to tell you that it is now working. Not only for sound but video as well. Why?, that I cannot tell you. I was working through the ideas above but did not believe that I made any actual changes, when all of a sudden I had sound, so many thanks for your ideas and time. Wonder what I did wrong in the first place and how did I correct it?, maybe time will tell. :D Problem solved
  10. I don't have mplayer, I installed Realplayer. I'm using Realplayer too, did you do anything special?
  11. I thought I'd try to listen to some of the BBC radio broadcasts, either live or replay. Guess I should have known better as nothing is obvious or straightforward in Linux is it?. I have Realplayer 10 installed on my Mandriva 2006 system. I also have CD sound which works, so the speakers are OK. However, when I load the BBC player off the BBC site I get no sound. After reading the other topics on the issue the only thing I partially understood was the idea of putting the 2 files nphelix.so and nphelix.xpt in the firefox directory. I did a search and the only firefox directory I could find was in my own user area under ./monzilla . So I copied the 2 files into there. No difference I'm afraid, still silence, even after a reboot. Also, how do I know whether Realplayer is an active plugin in Firefox on my system? Have you any ideas please? Grateful thanks from a frustrated newbie
  12. You fantastic person...I have version 7 installed right now..oh boy!.. and can print in landscape to fit the page etc. I can hardly believe it. And so simple, the Adobe site did all the work, great. Many many thanks
  13. No, xpdf is a different application. The command for Adobe Reader is acroread. To see if you have it installed, type in the command line prompt: which acroread If the answer is "No acroread in: ....", it's not installed. Install it, the latest version is Adobe Reader 7 for Linux. You may find the previous version (Adobe acrobat reader for Linux 5.x) much faster, though it's not as pretty. For both versions, there must be Mandriva rpms around (perhaps in contrib?). I installed the version from Adobe website, works just fine for me. Thanks for this...I'm on it right now.
  14. Is Adobe Reader XPDF?, if so then I have it and that's what causing the problem. Don't have plugins for FF, or at least not to my knowledge. If you have to add them after installation then I don't have them as I haven't touched it.
  15. Many thanks for all these interesting comments. As a new user I have been going to RPMdrake quite often as I've been trying out updates, new software and just getting used to things. hence the frustration. I do agree that one shoudn't have to go there very often and under such circumstances the time issue is not so critical. Will also reattach to the mirrors to make sure that I have the shorter version of the files. I imagine that once I know what is what I can also disable say Updates in RPMdrake as this no doubt speeds things up as well. The really nice thing for me is to learn that I haven't been doing something stupid, that others have the same experience and hence I gain confidence. I've also leant something about urpmi, thankyou for that Many thanks to one and all.
  16. Getting somewhat confused, but I do now know it's not just me, so that's a step in the right direction. I've been trying to stick with one distro recently mainly because Mandriva allows me to print (Samsung ML-1610 Laser) and surf the net with my Thompson Speedtouch 330 USB modem. I tried with other distros and either all or 1 of these items didn't function. With Mandriva 2006 I got them both to work. So I'll plug away with Mdrv and follow some of the suggestions above to see if things can be improved. Trouble with urpmi seems to be that you need to know what you are installing, so I need to go to rpmdrake to have a look anyway.
  17. Lucky for me I can change to A4, I would be so annoyed if I couldn't. about:config.....what is all that...my goodness, line and lines of odd settings or something. Did I go to the correct place? Hardly dare touch that lot. I'm running a Samsung ML-1610 which allows for various sizes, including A4, the dafult is letter however. Getting landscape instead of portrait is sometimes an issue. I get the TUX magazine and would like to print it, it needs landscape, but will XPDF switch to printing it, no no no. It doesn't seem to matter where you put the setting it still comes out portrait. I have to go to XP and run my Adobe from there...oh the horror of it all. I'm just glad nobody is watching!
  18. Please enlighten me.. what's Smart?
  19. Does anyone else find that RPMdrake is really slow?. When I open it from the menu system it says....Reading packages database..then when the actual package opens you get the same message again at the bottom of the pane. Should you install or remove anything it happens all over again before control is passed back to you. On each occassion it seems to take an inordinate amount of time, how frequently does the database need to be read, surely once per visit is enough. I agree that I'm using an old style pc, AMD K6 400mhz, 512K ram, but really it's not that bad. I've been wondering whether I have RPMdrake configured correctly, but cannot find any switches. Any views?
  20. There is nothing wrong with that :D I have Postscript/lp and nothing else. I have reinstalled Firefox which seems to have brought printing back, well for now anyway. Strange thing, it printed landscape and nothing I did would change it. Solved it now by changing the setting within Kwrite !! Odd this Linux. Still making progress, slowly. One of the main problems seems to be.....where are the controls...or...where are the master controls.
  21. Yes other applications seem OK, just a Firefox problem. I find reading the screens difficult, so prefer to print useful bits and read them quietly away from the pc.
  22. No, it's running as lp over a USB connection directly from the pc.
  23. Could the mDNSResponder have something to do with printing internet pages from my browser. When I disabled it I also lost this facility?. The browser if Firefox.
  24. fvs: Sorry, I fell into the same trap that I too dislike, assumptions and too much tehno speak. Have a look at this site... http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/99222 What you will see is a caddy designed for the SATA interface. Ebuyer did have some for IDE drives as well, I bought 6, perhaps they still have some but I didn't spend too much time looking. IDE (also called ATA I think) is the standard interface for hard discs, the more modern one is called SATA, I believe this to be a Serial version of ATA, and faster. Your computer's motherboard has to be able to support SATA for you to use it. Caddys are available for both interfaces, just get the right type. However, the picture shows a caddy in its outer casing. The outer casing is the size of a 5 1/4" slot (just like the DVD slot) in the front of your machine. Once installed ( very easy ) you can remove the hard disc from your machine by simply pulling it out from the front of your pc (it's in a plastic box), rather like a DVD, provided the power is off that is. If you have 2 or more of the inner casings (which hold the hard disc) you can now simply swap your hard discs around without taking the top of your computer, and whenever you choose. Before you power up you choose the hard disc you want, insert it into the machine, and switch on the power. The system will boot as normal. When you've finished with that session, power down, put in another caddy, power up and off you go with that system ( presumably a different distro ). So the first time you powered up you could have had a Mandriva system, and on the second time a Fedora 4 distro. If you have big enough hard drives you can even have 2 distros per drive. (maybe more but I don't know about that). One inner is supplied with each complete Caddy system that you buy. So if you want more that 1 hard disc to be swapped you need to get extra inner sections. The complete caddy was so cheap at Ebuyer that I got 6, so I have plenty of spare inners for my single installed outer. So on my shelf I have a few spare outer casings. They may come in handy 1 day. There are several manufacturers of these devices, a Google search will probably lead you to the sites. I found Ebuyer to be the best price and way below my local Maplin store, who also stock a range. Looking at an original box I see that they use...3.5" Internal Mobile HDD Rack...as the description. Mine came from a company called Safecom and have the Linux logo on them...it gets better!! Safecom can be found at http:safecom.cn, email support@safecom.cn (none of the refs checked by me) System requirements Linux 2.4.x or above I use product code SIHC-35133 (designed for IDE drives) I trust this explanation helps you a little more than the first one.
  25. Have done as you suggested and 5335 has gone now, leaving me with just ipp and x11. Output from netstat -tan below. [root@localhost david]# netstat -tan Active Internet connections (servers and established) Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:6000 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:631 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN tcp 0 0 :::6000 :::* LISTEN Down to just 2 now, it gets better and better. Gratitude from this end.
