  1. No, I open it after. I had this with 2006 as well, while I was messing around with it, I found that some installs it would work fine, next install it would show the signs I describe above. My other machine has 2007 installed on it as well, although it is the PowerPack version, (that should't matter) but it works fine in this regard. oh, and yes, konqueror.
  2. Thank you, will try that as soon as possible. One thing about MUB, you can't complain about the service
  3. I use my Microsoft FF wheel to play Torcs (nice game by the way, if you like that sort of thing, check it out if you haven't already) I can get it to work no problems, but say I shut down my Computer today, tomorrow when I start it up again, I'll have to reenter the following commands, modprobe evdev modprobe joydev modprobe usbhid what can I do, so as I don't have to keep doing this?
  4. I have this strange issue, which I'll do my best to try to explain, and maybe one of you kind gentleman or ladies, could help me out. Let say I open up a new kedit document, save it to my 'Documents' folder (any folder will do), if I then open the Document folder the file that I just saved there will not be there, well not until I hit the reload/refresh button, then it will show up. I use Ccrypt to encrypt/decrypt (as you may guess) certain files on my PC, when it encrypts a file, it adds the .cpt extension to the file, however, when I do this the file/file extension will not change, again until I hit the reload button, and until I do hit the reload button, if I open the file it will be blank, and if I hover my pointer over it it will display a padlock on the file icon, but once I hit reload button all will be normal. The same also happens when doing the reverse, encrypting the file. Also today, I was checking a newly created log file, and I just checked the file properties to see the modified date, as I had just basically modified the file, however it didn't show the correct modified date/time, again, until I hit the reload button. As you can see all these things are similar, so, I ask, whats going on?
  5. hmmm, to tell you the truth I didn't even look at the cpu usage, I just run top again. and it's giving Firefox as 99%, however, there is no real performace hit, I can play a game off Quake3 with no problems. As you can see in the one I posted before, up the top of this page, it was showing 3  Here's one just after a reboot, top - 20:05:23 up 2 min, 1 user, load average: 0.68, 0.46, 0.18 Tasks: 94 8. I downloaded it from the Mozilla/Firefox site, I use 4 extensions with it, Add Bookmark Here Inline Google Definitions Plain Text To Link Net Usage Item When I look at the entries in KDE SystemGuard ProcessTable, where I am able to scroll easily and see all the tasks, there isn't anything else that comes close to using what Firefox is using, other than the ones that say 0, the vast majority are only 4 digit, with a dozen or so in the 20000 to 40000 range, and X being next inline to Firefox.
  9. Yes I see that it switches, and have been watching it for a while, but when it switches 99% seem to be the same as before the switch, only adding a couple of extras. I must go know, back this afternoon. Thanks

  11. Well yeah, it sought of occurs increasingly as the download progresses, although you may not really notice it to bad until a big chunck/most of the ram is used. I tend not to do much whilst downloading, I prefer to let it do it's thing, and use another PC if I need to do something else. I just use Firefox to download, nothing special. I tried doing it through konqueror and it's the same. I'm on my other PC now, and just checking it again with a download, but the same happens here to.
  12. If I download a file, the used memory will start to rise, (it seems to rise fairly constantly, at about 10000KB a minute) and will continue to as long as the download continues, or all the ram is used. If I stop the download, the rise in used ram will stop, if the download is a large one it will continue to rise up to the point where a small amount of swap gets used. On a 700MB download it will usually get up to about 1.5GB used, on the likes of the Mandriva Powerpack, 4.3GB, it's all gone(almost) and a small amount off swap is used. Once the download is finished there is no real drop in amount of ram used, it stays maxed out until rebooted. It is repeatable every time with a large download. I have done it 5 times over the last couple of days, and every time it happens. Is there a way to flush/clear the ram without the need to reboot?
  13. The reason I brought this up is because there IS a problem, which is what lead me to look at the memory usage, I don't habitually go around checking how much memory is being used. I noticed noticeable performance degradation, looked, and seen the RAM thing, so I just thought that may be the/a problem. The only time I get the problem happens to coincide with the Memory being shown as practically all used, and a small amount of swap being used. I can play Quake3, Quake4, Doom3, etc all day long, without any problems, but as soon as I do something like Download large files (one thing that I have noticed will do it every time), the used RAM skyrockets, and I get the problem, There IS a problem here, it may not be what I am thinking as you say, but there surely is one.
  14. Sorry, I didn't see your first post, but..., let me get his straight, it is normal that all my RAM is used, to the point where the screensaver won't even run correctly when activated, it runs at a crawl, stutters and jerks, and to the point where the system is noticeably slow? (all of which is cured by a reboot) Sorry, but I wasn't aware that this was normal behaviour. Perhaps the RAM isn't being free'd up, If while it is showing that most of the RAM is used, I try and start Quake3 or Quake4 for example, they will take at least 30 sec's to even start, I will just get a blank screen and have to just sit an wait, however, after a reboot, or at a time when all the RAM isn't shown as used, they will start instantly, surely this is not normal behaviour?
  15. I have just tried it using Konqueror instead of Firefox, exactly the same thing happens, if I cancel the download, the constant increase in RAM usage stops, and drops a little, but not as low as it was before the download started.

You can watch the memory usage continually rise, at the rate of approx 10000KB a minute. Thanks, I'll store that away in my little tips and tricks file, but I don't think I should be using any swap at all with 2GB of RAM, especially while only running Firefox and downloading a couple of files  Time to reboot ... again
  17. Both my systems are running Mandriva 2007, 1 the Free DVD version, and 1 the Powwerpack DVD version, both have 2 gig of RAM, and both display the same problem. If I download large files, say DVD/CD ISO's, or do an update through MCC Software Manager, and or install a couple of hundred MB of software, something that takes a little bit of time, almost all my RAM will be used up and it will have started eating into my swap. Just doing normal things, using Firefox, Amarok etc, it seems sometimes that the RAM that a program uses does not free up when that program is stopped and the amount of used RAM accumulates. Heres an example after just having Firefox open with 2 tabs, and downloading a 4.3 GB DVD ISO, been running for about 6 hours. free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 2075524 2018396 57128 0 62508 1482152 -/+ buffers/cache: 473736 1601788 Swap: 2152668 184 2152484 Any ideas?
  18. or you can just right click on the desktop, choose Create New/Link to Application, give it a name, and an Icon if you like, then under the application tab, in the 'Command' box type, kdesu konqueror click ok, then when you double click it enter your root password and away you go. You can also add a path after so it will open to that, eg kdesu konqueror / - will open to root's home kdesu konqueror /home/yourusername - will open to your home folder etc.
  19. or you can just drag and drop the Home icon from your desktop to your panel, and there it be.
  20. Stick with it, it will come with time, it does become easier/more natural eventually. I know how totally alien it may seem to you at the moment, but it does get better. And if you make it through the tough bits, you'll be better off for it. Oh, you can also get GoogleEarth through the Mandriva software manager, you would have to set up you repositories, and then just search for google earth, and it will install it for you, you can also do that for firefox, but I don't like some of the things that Mandriva have done with it, so I prefer to just get Firefox directly from Mozilla.
  21. Well, this is what I do for Firefox, just extract the contents, (you can just right click and select open in new tab) then copy the firefox folder to where ever, I always put it in, usr/local making the path usr/local/firefox (others may put it elsewhere for various reasons, multiple users etc, but I have no problems with it there) To run it, I right click on the desktop, select 'create new/link to application, give it a name, firefox is good :D , you can also click the square to the left to select an icon, then click the 'Application' tab, beside the command box, click the 'browse' button and navigate to 'usr/local/firefox' (or where ever you decided copy the firefox folder) then click the file 'firefox', then click ok, resulting in '/usr/local/firefox/firefox' being inserted in the command box. Click ok, then double click the firefox icon that will be created on your desktop, and your away. If it doesn't run when you double click it, open the usr/local/firefox directory, then press f4, which will open a konsole, then type in ./firefox hit enter, and see if it gives you any errors, mine always needs a version of libstdc++ to be installed, so I just install libstdc++5-3.3.6-3mdk.i586 from the installation DVD and all is fine. Google earth, open a console and type sh nameofbinfile.bin where nameofbinfile.bin = the name of the google earth file, press enter and that should do it. (I think) You may find some of this stuff useful to have a read through, https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=10614 have fun
  22. You should be ok as ianw1974 says, it's easy as, I've done it several times without any problems, just make sure when you select Custom Partitioning you don't delete the WindowsXP partition ;) and/or any other partition you may have windows stuff on. If by this you mean that you want to resize your Windows partition to gain and extra 20GB, well, people do it, I was never quite confident enough to try it, but never really needed to anyways. Best be prepared and back up the stuff you can't afford to loose just incase, then the worst would be you'd have to do a Windows reinstall if it went down the toilet. Good Luck ..., have fun ..., you'll be fine.
  23. Yes, that's what I looked at when I first came across the twirly back in the RC releases, but what I would really like, is not to change the cursor theme, but just keep the default cursor theme, and just get rid of old twirly, this I think would not be possible, well, at least without some major hackery type stuff, which is far out of my league. It's really no big deal, but if it could be done easily, I'd surely do it :)
  24. Well I don't get any problems/artifacts from the "twirly thing", but I would like to be able to "banish" it myself, don't know how but sorry, hopefully someone will. It may not be possible though.
  25. This is one thing that really gets on my goat, it is simply not true, at least with XP, and I am going by the only thing I can, the one thing I know to be true, and that is my personal experience. XP crashes very rarely, I have no problems whatsoever with it. XP is rock solid. Can you crash it?, can you mess it up?, sure, but just because you can crash a Ferrari, or blow up it's engine, does not equate to a Ferrari being a bad car, or it having a bad engine. There is no accounting for a bad user/driver (Well, I guess while I am at it I may as well keep going) In my experience it is also a fallacy that you need to reformat it regularly, there really is no need for it, I know plenty of people who are running the same install years later, and yes, it is running fine. I still have one rig running fine after 2 years plus, can many of us Linux users say the same ?, many can't, simply because of the fact that they upgrade to a new release every year or half year, or change to a new distro every now and then, that they don't even get the chance to acheive that longevity. Are there Linux systems that are running fro that length of time and longer? sure there are. I also find the argument about virus's, spyware, etc, etc, on Windows to be somewhat misleading. Since 1998 I have had 1 virus, and that was given to me by someone I know, who gave me a file that was infected. It caused me no problems at all. I am on the net everyday, I download much, much more than the average joe (I'm a gamer to the core). Also the thing about updating your virus scanners, spyware prog's etc are time consuming and a hassle, like wow, it takes me approx 1 to 2 minutes a day to update my AVG, Spybot, and Ad-Aware. Is Windows targeted, and is it susceptible to virus's etc, sure, does that mean you ARE going to be struck down, no. I run only the inbuilt XP firewall, AVG Free, Ad-Aware Free and Spybot S@D(the latter 2 do nothing to stop infections etc in real time on my machine, they just scan when I tell them to manually once a week, by the way, they have never found any nasties) Before XP I used no firewall and Mcafee Virus scanner, nothing else. 1 virus in 8 years, hardly worth mentioning. Sure, there are people who are staunch Linux people, they have their reasons why they prefer Linux, and why they think Linux is superior, to them WindBlows !! on the other hand, There are people who are staunch Windows people, they also have their reasons why they prefer Windows, and why they think Windows is superior, to them LinSux !! Who is right? they all are, they are using what suits them, and their needs best. To me the area Windows is just soooooooo far ahead of Linux, is in an area that is not the fault of Linux, it is the lack of support for/from mainstream programs/products. Since comming to Linux, there has not been one 'minor' program that I need, that I don't prefer the Linux equivalent to what I used in Windows, things like compression utilities, ftp, media players, etc, etc, and whats more, most of what I require comes preinstalled, or at least selectable at the installation of the OS, simply amazing, I am still blown away by the depth and quality of software available right off the bat, and then there is the repositories, I actually find it a bit mind numbing at times. But, .... it is the lack of support for/from the mainstream programs/products, and especially the specialist stuff, that lets Linux down, and where for me, Windows just bounds out in front. I need my Doom3/Quake4, "insert game name here" engine tools, but they, or an equivalent, simply don't exist in Linux. I need my ProTools, BFD, Trilogy, 'insert software title here", in some cases equivalents do exist, eg, Pro Tools - Rosegarden, Ardour, but they aren't really 'equivalent' they will do the job to a certain extent, but ... I often fight within myself as to why I even bother with Linux, I mean, Windows does everything I want, it does it easily, and it does it out of the box, it just works as they say. Where as Linux does not do everything I want, I still need to have Windows installed, why bother using/maintaining 2 different systems when all I need is 1? To be honest, I really don't know, I can't really explain it, except for Linux is just plain fun, a joy to just use. Windows is just an OS, a means to an end, where as Linux transends just being an OS, it is fun to use in it's own right, it's a state of mind, it's an Ideal, it's nigh on a way of life --------------------------------------------------------------- Besides consoles lacking the Keyboard/Mouse combination (they have been/are maybe available for consoles, but never really took off) consoles also lack in the are of moding, game editing, these are hugely popular today, and greatly extend the games lifespan, this is an area where consoles lack severely, and PC's shine. The ability to customise the game, PC's have it, consoles don't. Sought of like Linux in the OS world. hmmm, then you know a different sought of gamer than I do. Maybe true for the casual gamer. But most hard core gamers that I know, know how to make there machines fly, know the internals of there PC's inside out, know all about configuring, editing files, getting there hands dirty. Hope I didn't offend anyone, no offence was intended, sorry for dribbling on incoherently for so long, just that I keep seeing certain reasons why Linux is/should be prefered over Windows, Virus's Spyware, stability etc, and in my experience, well, I never experienced that, quite the contrary, it's just so foreign to me. I feel better now. Linux/Mandriva FTW !!!
