yeah I have all my entries in urpmi my main thing is now I just need to learn all the syntax..:) Once I do that I'll be more confortable with urpmi at the command line..:) I did the install once via the gui and it seemed to lose my nifty cdrom icons on my desktop...Granted not a major issue but none the less usefull to me for now..

I checked /etc/fstab and /etc/mtab and that seems normal....

Yes I have that selected...but in the original install I don't beleive that was selected...I could be wrong though..

No dice on last suggestion...I stuck my user acct in the cdrom,cdwriter and root groups still no go... What I don't understand is this worked peachy before the update to 3.1.2 using texstar rpms and I wasn't in any of those groups... So in theory the group shouldn't matter I should still be able to access my cdrom and vdwriter like before.

Ok I tried the right click add new CD/DVD device I set the device to /dev/hdc which is the cdrom... it is mounted at /mnt/cdrom but when I click that icon I get an error message saying..

I tried adding that route but can't seem to get it to work right I'll see what I can figure out.. Also could someone point me to a good source to learn exactly how install rpm's from say texstar and such using urpmi... Man pages give some pretty good detail but I'd like more reading so I can become more familare with it.

Ok I redownloaded the rpms..and have installed them I made a typo when entering textar into urpmi, I used the MCC to installed , not 100% sure on how to install with urpmi yet..... Anyways all is installed and seems to be running great. Only issue that I can tell is my2 cd icons and floppy icons are gone. I have 1 for the DVD, CDRW and Floppy... I am assuming those show up due to supermount. Not 100% possitive but anyone have any suggestions on getting those back? I'd rather not have to mount them everytime I want to view a cd...

XD2 is nice and reminds me of a more advanced dropline gnome... I installed redhat without KDE or Gnome and just a simple window maker setup and a few minor x aps and installed XD2 and I must say it ran pretty good. To bad they don't make it for MDK....

Ok I have been trying to install some various rpm's off texstar... Everytime I try to install the KDE 3.1.2 rpms and the 3.1.2 libqt files I get a msg saying the files are corrupt or damaged. I added the site to urpmi as the site said to. I go into the MCC under Software management and click the install icon.. I do a search on all files from texstar and tell it to install the 3.1.2 kde rpm's and that is when I get the corupt or damaged files error..Anyone have any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

How would one go about setting KDE up in MDK 9.1 so that even in say Kmail or if you create a shortcutt on the desktop to a website that it uses say Mozilla or Firebird instead of Konqueror? Basically I want everything that needs to open a web page to load mozilla or firebird I personally don't like konqueror... Any help or direction appreciated..:)

Yep fingers crossed cause it seems no matter what distro I try I seem to always go back to mdk...would stink for the company to go away and have to decide on another distro..uhg...I have a feeling we'll be seeing many more releases...

NP you can still do a full ftp install if suse 8.2 pro..:) or jsut download mdk iso..;)

That's because the Suse 8.2 live eval cd will only run what's on the cd. It does not allow you to install or change any packages/software. It creates a simple config file on your hd of hardware info and that's it doesn't install anything else to the hd. It's intended for evaluation not as a day to day setup.

I'd consider trying it nce a .5 iso is available...to lazy to do ftp installs at the house..lol Would rather download at work on our t1 and burn to cd..:) I actually enjoy trying out different distro's popular or not...

What's the easiest route to go to install textars kde 3.1.2 rpm's..Still new to mdk and still learning everything..I just wanna make sure everything goes smooth without any nasty dependancy issues..

Finally got it installed after going thru every mirror to find one with all the files needed...:) I must say evolution 1.4 loads fast as all get out..

Cool sounds good enough...That's how I figured it would be but before I jumped head first I wanted to make sure there was nothing else I had to do. Thanks for all the info everyone. SOunds like I should have an easy change over.

So you have it working with a DSL Router? Doe sit slow down the boot time of MDK at all...All you did was plug the login and password into the routers config and didn't have to install any software into MDK? Again thanks for all the input it's greatly appreciated..

One thing I am curious about is the ppoe.... After initial setup you should be able to plug that login into the dsl router and let it handle the login aspect therefore not needing any special software for the pc. I am actually hoping to find someone who has SBC Yahoo dsl setup using a dsl modem router for the authentication process...If that's the case then no added software setup would be needed.

I am considering getting the local SBC Yahoo dsl but I am worried if it will work with Linux. I do have a Linksys Cable/DSL modem router that can handle PPOE. I guess mainly I am curious how the setup works and if anyone has successfully gotten it to work with MDK 9.1. I did a search of the forums but didn't really find what I am looking for...GOnna try google aswell...Anyways any input or info would be greatly appreciated.

I had this very same thing happen to me. What it ended up being was from the factory my HD's on my PC were jumpered to Cable Select instead of set for master or slave. I set ide0 to master and ide1 to slave and boom booted without a hitch.

The system is just a home pc.. will not be run as a public server of any kind. Although for my purposes I will have MySql, FTP, Apache and SSH servers running, SSH so I can connect remotely if needed and FTP to send files and allow friends to log in and grab something if need be.. Apache and MySQL will be used strictly for my own testing purposes.. I guess I should have been more clear on what the pc was going to be used for. ATM my setup is 1 gig swap, 8 gig / and the rest in /home...works great but I was considering alternative setups...So far most of this is mainly a big learning process as I migrate from windows to Linux full time..:) Unfortunately I still have to have Windows at work...

Ok I have been using MDK 9.1 for almsot 2 months now...I am going to reinstall now since I have managed to basically tear up my initial install from experiementing anf such..:) Anyways here's my planned partitions.... /, /usr, /home, /var, /tmp The HD I am installing on is a 30 gig HD and MDK will use the entire HD... I know /home will need some space since that will be my home dir so to speak....I know var is generally for log files and /tmp for temp files, /usr for installed apps and such... and / I know everything else goes there.... Anyways just looking for some opinions on how much HD space to alot for each mount point...Open to any and all suggestions..:) Thanks in advance for any suggestions and insight...
