    Tweaking Mandriva

The things is I think when I install a package and it has some depencies which it installs too, some of those depencies are left on the computer and these pile up and another things I think logs and crash dumps seriously clutter up space too...
  3. Well I tried but I ran into a big problem as MDE KDE 3.5.2 refused to install (at this point I had already removed kde 351!) as it depended on files older than the installed ones (ie. from cooker). After I got this fixed and X and kde up and running again, I ran into more trouble because there were some mde xorg upgrades left. Because now cooker refused to update some program because they had depencies of which newer versions were already installed .
  4. Arts is in ¨COnfigure your desktop¨-> sound-> sound system-> uncheck ¨enable the sound system¨ I believe the ALSA driver is somewhere nestled into the kernel, so try another one. BTW just know I was trying to overclock my videocard and ran into the same problem, just as soon has I hit the button to go... Anyway I say try a different kernel and you´ll get a different set of audio drivers to go, you just have to go to the hell off reinstalling a new kernel module for your video card though :P
  5. I had Arts already disabled 2-3 days after installing as it kept crashing all the time and it drove me crazy :P 2.6.16 works fine for me, been using it for 2-3 weeks, what sort of problems would you expect? I really want to get the ntfs working without Captive (though I didn´t feel like looking into it now)
  6. I´m trying Cooker now and had similar problems which started randomly but only when playing sound, didn´t matter through which app. flash, kaffeine, realplayer, videolan. Everything stopped (ie the sound would stop),the mouse would freeze and the keyboard wouldn´t take any input. But I had this problem only with a particular kernel (2.6.17rc1), I never did have the patience to wait for more than 30-40secs and would reboot. Maybe you should try updating
  7. I´m not very apt with the command line either and prefer to do things graphicly anyways, commandlines are so 1985.... Anyway, you could just extract ff in your home directory and run from there or type kdesu konqueror and have konqueror launched as root or enable root logins as described here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/sh...t=root+gdm.conf and then put the unzipped directory where you want it. Don´t know which would be good paths though for installation... (edit: fix link to correct thread)

    Tweaking Mandriva

I´m getting a bit tight on space as I only have 10GB and 3 GB left allocated for Mandriva. I have lot´s of space on other drives but don´t know how to install there and these drives are fat and ntfs and contain a lot of data too...
  9. Try to read the KDM manual first, I don´t have link anymore but google for it. The answer I believe was right at the start of the manual...
  10. genkdmconf --help though it really didn´t work for me, make a backup of etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc before doing it. I think you´re best bet would be asking in the kde forums though, the helped me solve my problems with kdm when I upgraded to 3.5.2 edit: come to think of, I think I came across a solution for your problem in the KDM manual, something about editing a file ~/xinitrc or something like that....

    Tweaking Mandriva

Thanks. I did not have KAT installed. Are there other ways to speed things up or optimise things? My install is getting quite big, I suspect this is due to the fact I install lot´s of software and then unistall but the depending packages are still there. I there a way to remove packages which don´t have depencies?

    Tweaking Mandriva

There seem to be a lot of processes running, slowing down the system a bit, I foind this list: http://builder.com.com/5100-6372_14-6018195.html but it doesn´t seem accurate (ie acpi(d)) isn´t just for laptops is it? Also I can´t seem to disable some services like netfs and dkms. Are there more tweak available too, to make thing run faster?
  13. load ¨/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/nvidia/libglx.so¨ is left over from the plf install load ¨glx¨ should be the line, put a # before load ¨/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/nvidia/libglx.so¨ and insert load ¨glx¨ (btw sometimes the nvidia bla bla. run from nvidia fails to re- install and only removes the old driver install, change your xorg.conf and if it doesn´t wotk give reinstalling nvidia blabla. run a try or two)
  14. Probably mde are updating their repos, when I try those links from my browser I´m getting 404´s too (ie page not found)
  15. There are 3 different tabs (output, input, switches) in kmix, choose the tab ¨switches¨ and the option should be there.
  16. In kmix there's a setting somewhere, I'm not using Mandriva/KDE right now, anyway look around in the different tabs, you should disable/b] digital output, it's enabled by default. (edit: it´s under kmix->switches: audigy analog/digital output jack, toggle it to see which setting works for you)
  17. I don´t know about linux drivers but I tried to find decend Windows drivers for these for a long long time, can´t find them. Intersil has been sold and and only sells their drivers (for windows only?), wireless manufacturers use their chips and sometimes have driver. Last update I found is from somewhere from November 03 and these (and all previous releases) have been giving me a lot of headache. (I bought a second wireless adapter which turned out to have a intersil chipset which gave exactly the same problem (ie. the device malfunctioning after a certain time, having to reboot windows), then a friend lend another wireless card which to turned out to be intersil prism and gave the same problem ie. 3 cards, one of which integrated on the mainboard, one via usb and one via pcmcia, all with the same problem). The best bet would be trying to find cards by different manufacturers based on this chipset (i know the following companies have used them in some of their products: belkin, medion, siemens and of course conexant). It has taken me ages and ages to get these working properly in XP, without success even, I doubt it can be done in linux. I´d be interested if things would work in Linux, right now I invested so much time, I should have just bought another card not based on a intersil prism! the following link is to the most recent xp drivers for this chipset i have found so far http://www1.medion.de/downloads/index.pl?o...iber&lang=be_be they shouls have wpa support )
  18. Either you have to set up your web page to specify the fonts to use, else the browser just uses its default fonts or you change your browser´s fonts so its default fonts are the same as windows´. My TTF just look the same, ie. Arial in linux looks like Arial in Windows, except when I use Wine, for some reason Arial (and some other fonts) won´t smooth. (my browser in linux uses bitstream which looks very similar to arial, except that it looks a bit off)
  19. I had to manually select the right fonts in my browser (Opera)
  20. I tried the kde and kde devel channel, nothing but I did get an answer from the dutch kde channel :) Under [General] in /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc add the line: ServerVTs=-7 :D
  21. yeah, but i like to have things working :P
  22. I had made a backup of the /kdm directory after the install of 352 and replaced it with the direcory after reconfiguring with genkdmconf. Then I´m back with the original problem, no keyboard working. In this backup was also a backup of an older kdmrc (which auto logged in a user) I used that one , but then the keyboard still doesn´t work untill I reset the x-server. So to sum up: kdm directory after genkdmconf: keyboard works but not able to go to a gui (neither gnome, ice wm nor kde) kdm directory after install of 352: keyboard doesn´t work untill restarting x server older kdmrc: keyboard doesn´t work either untill restarting x server
  23. Good on ya mate. I´m still having my own problems: https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtop...32entry234032
  24. I´ve tried genkdmconf --help as was in the readme of the kdmrc directory with just about every --no-old flag there was, now I can use the keyboard but I have the same problem as described in this thread: https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=31832 after logging in I´m brought back to the login screen. When I start a terminal session I can startx (after first having to do a service dm stop as root) and GDM still works like a charm.
  25. I went to the IRC already they had no idea, but perhaps you guys know. Maybe the keyboard is ¨mapped¨ to the wrong x-session or display, or something like that
