I'm not exactly the expert here,

but from what I've learned you can indeed put the boot information on a floppy disk.

In the following screen, choose for 'on floppy' (see to it you have an empty floppy ready!)

P.S. I think it is not supposed to 'skip' the bootloader, whatever installation type you choose... maybe you skipped screens a bit too fast?

However, I have since upgraded to ML9.2 and now my camera works perfectly both with and without the cradle.

I can second that; I also switched to 9.2 which solved my problem.

Maybe the issue here is better support for USB 2.0 in the new Mandrake version? Cannot directly think of another cause (my cam: Trust 700 LCD Powercam).

I got the exact same error message you are describing, but it is solved now.

If you ask me, I think that Firebird is just smarter about this (it has a tendency to ;) ). If it really matters that much, then why don't you transform it into the appropriate value (hexadecimal notation or st.)? That way, no-one will know the difference, should only be one or two lines of extra programming.

If you do manual html coding (which I advise, since it is the best way to learn), chanches are you will never go back to another program. Plus it's great to learn: it's got an autocomplete function and a few toolbars/wizards with all tags&attributes (style sheets too), even indicating those that are deprecated (obsolete), plus pretty good documenation and very nice extensions.

You can mostly find what you are looking for in the program itself, which is a big help when you are learning.

[Edit: of course this is a Windows program, although the author says it should work with Wine.]

I am looking for an authoring environment to create relatively simple adventure games (like the early king's quests, scumm games or even as crude as the H-games).

I started to use Adventure Game Studio on Windows and that works great, but I want to be able to work in Linux instead. It's so much more convenient and I am thinking of fully switching to it sometime.

Any ideas?

Well, everybody's out of the house, so I thought I'd get the ol' cable back out and get on the internet to get some updates, software and try out certain things.

I cannot seem to connect to the cable modem though. The cable modem, a Motorola SB4200, is functioning: all the led's are on and there is a blinking orange one to indicate activity.

This worked fine in 9.1, after I discovered I first had to reset my cable modem. Now, I cannot get a IP adress. I think the problem has something to do with this line:

"SIOCSIFFLAGS: Device or resource busy".

I ran a few config tools, you can see their results in the attachment. The components alone seem to work fine, but something is wrong...

and if it does fail after all... well bummer, I think we've all gone through reinstalls in the beginning. 30 minutes, that's not too hard... I mean it's not the end of the world if you've got no important data. If you do, back up.

As bvc says, you probably do not have the kernel-source installed. I had the same problem. Get the kernel-SOURCE file from one of the mirrors, should be on the one you got your iso's from in one of the folders above (I incidentally downloaded the kernel srpm itself at first )

As for the screenshots, thanks. I love it! It's easy on the eyes, even though there's a bit of glitter. But I don't mind a bit of glitter ;)

methinks class action suits should already have started all over the world (I am correct in thinking this does not only consern America, am I not?); with such a vast and faithful community I would have assumed SCO would be over its ears already with lawsuits. As of yet, it is only a select handful of companies.

Of course, one perfectly good reason for this would be:

1) Capital

2) Time: to take the time to get well-organised and prepared, knowing this is a case Linux cannot afford to loose.

Anyhow, it IS refreshing news about SCO for a change (anyone here ever wanted to put McBride&Co a sock in their mouths?)

Reporting back!

Gowator, illogic-al, I did it!!

I got the Nvidia drivers installed, it wasn't too bad.

I did not actually download the 'kernel-source...' file, but instead the 'kernel-...' file itself pretty stupid no? :unsure:

When I got the *right* file, install with urpmi went smooth.

Then I thought I had messed up but it appeared I installed the XF86Config-4 file in the wrong location (under root dir). Anyway I did not have to change a lot, just change the line from 'nv' to 'nvidia', seems ' load: "glx" ' was already in the file.

You will see it worked because the GLXgears program is working. Is the framerate decent? (also, am I officially a 'geek' now ??)

Then I played around a little, got the Flash plugin for Mozilla working, next I installed 'slicker' (there was a RPM on KDE-look). Slicker is in its infancy, but man does it look great. With it I can get rid of at least half of the icons on my desktop and my borders will finally be of any use ;).

Then I went on installing a few Mac OSX-based themes. I like the theme, but when installing they seemed a little too bright, too 'screamy' to me. Well, after some experimenting I came up with my perfect settings! Well I know it is personal taste, but if any of you wonder how I came to it: I got the Aqua-3.1, Aqua-Graphite 3.1 (I think I used that one) and the Aqua_Mac_Beta themes from KDE-look.org.

Window decoration: Aqua_mac

Style: Aqua_graphite (I suspect this one, but I installed all 3, might be a mix)

Afterwards: style 'High Performance Liquid'.

Iconset: Noia KDE

You can take a look at the screenshot I posted. I absolutely love it; it's grey (calm on my eyes), stylish (Mac-ish) and very subtle. I dunno, maybe I'll call it Noia-OSX, or Noia-Mosfet's X or something :P

I can't seem to find binaries -or even source code- anywhere on the site.

I tried to follow the instructions, but I got an error report (log file posted as attachment). I do not know what went wrong: I got the kernel-source RPM from the exact same ftp server where I downloaded the ISO's, the kernel version seems right (I checked and it's 2.4.22-mdk10; or '10mdk' not sure about the order).

I did everything illogic-al advised me to do, but somewhere something went wrong.

Anyway, maybe the log file means something to anybody.

No, I still dual-boot. Getting internet to work will requir some hardware investments I suspect, I'm still checking things out.

I can download the script via my windoze system, no prob, but I'll probably also have to download the instructions. I hope you can still reach the mounted partitions (guess so)? Also, how do I get in a pure text console when booting (I think I read this was recommened). Last thing, how can I be sure I got the right version?

I just installed Mdk 9.2 a few days ago and loving every bit of it. Only problem I had was installing the nvidia drivers. I used the RPM's I got for 9.1 (from Texstar), this was real easy for me to install.

Yes, I did find the tutorial for installing Mdk from a command line, but it sounds a bit complicated; I don't want to mess up then have to reïnstall everything again. So I was wondering if there really isn't an easier way to install these drivers (like the RPM method I used in 9.1).

Don't get me wrong the problems are few, it's just that compared to an otherwise fantastic release, I can't image that nobody picked up on this stuff before release.

Yeah, I can understand what you are saying. A lot of the fixes that no doubt will arrive through Mdk Update, should already have been fixed before the final release.

What I do not understand is that you say 'rpm is broken'. Urpmi worked wonderful on my system, had no trouble installing anything at all (except the Nvidia drivers). Then again, I get everything from my hard disk, so I do not know how easily you can get stuff directly from the web.

Basically, my experience was wonderful because everything I use for my daily tasks, worked without much need of tweaking. Of course you tend to forget that everyone's experience is different.
