  1. Hi, I've just installed Mandriva 2006 on my computer. It was a "clean install", and I run 2005LE on this same computer without problems. Now, I'm unable to make X start with the ati driver (ati 9600pro video card). When trying to startx, screen goes blank (TTX 1787 CRT monitor) and, after a few seconds, the green light on it start to blink orange like if no video signal was detected. I have then to teboot the computer. I've tried the VESA driver instead of ATI and things works fine in VESA. Here's a copy of my ATI xorg.conf file: I've tried to fix the vert. refresh to 60Hz or 75Hz with the same results. I've also tried to change the color depth to 24 or 8, also without results. BTW, I remember that there is a command to test X without actually strating it. It allows you to see the error messages without getting stuck in X. Anybody remember this command or parameter of startx ? Any ideas?
  2. Thanks, Evrything works fine when making the nivia module load at boot time. So, problem is now solved.
  3. You can set a fixed refresh rate by entering only one frequency instead of a range, as shown in the post of chrisz. For example, if you want a 75 Hz rate system wide, you just change the line for: VertRefresh 75-75
  4. Should I keep the line Driver "nvidia" in the xorg.conf file ? What about the other lines in the Device section of xorg.conf ?
  5. Hello, I never had any problem making the nvidia driver work on my system until I upgraded from 10.0 to 10.1. Since I've upgraded to Mandrake 10.1, I'm totally unable to make the nvidia driver works correctly and tried everything that I could think of or found on the net, with no success so far. Thus, in almost total despair, I write this message in case somebody here get an idea on how to solve the problem. First, I've downloaded the driver from the nvidia site and compiled it without problem. Video card is an Asus 6800 (GeForce DDR) and monitor is a quite standard CRT (TTX 1787). When I try to startx, I get the following error message: Here's my xorg.conf file: Thing I've tried include adding these lines, alone or in combination, to xorg.conf: Option "IgnoreEDID" "1" Option "IgnoreEDID" "true" Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "DFP, TV, CRT" I've also tried to lower the color depth from 24 to 16. All these changes give me the same error message and I'm totally unable to make X works with the nvidia driver. Everything works fine if a choose a basic video driver (VESA, which I used at the moment). Any ideas on what to try next ?
  6. Well, it's more a question of personal preference and of what you want to do with your system. None is really better than the other, they're just different. Since your new to this, the best is to try them for yourself and see which one is the best fit for your needs. After that, you just work with the one YOU like best, no matter what other peoples may say or think. I writed an article on this topics a few months ago: Choosing a GUI. A bit outdated on the technical side but the basic principles are still valid.
  7. The only problem with the way described on the MandrakeClub post is that the fonts are only installed for one user. It certainly wouls be nice to add the fonts for all users.
  8. Thanks! Muting the mic (none are connected to the soundcard) in the mixer solve the problem. Now, everything works fine.
  9. Is there other people here that have problem with MDK10 and SBLive! Value ? What I get is a continous strident sound coming from the soundcard. Changing the alsa driver (snd-emu101k) to the OSS one (emu101k) solve the problem. But I cannot use applications that use ALSA and must stick with the OSS driver. Any idea on what may happen ?
  10. Is there anyone who knows where is the "Import Windows Fonts" button in MDK 10 ? The one that was in the Control Panel in "Font" (where it was since at least MDK 8) just isn't there in MDK10 ? I've searched it in about all the menus but it doesn't seems to be anywhere... Thanks!
  11. 1) As said before, tried to remove all the services you don't need. 2) Have you tried diffrent GUI ? KDE isn't exactly a light environment and suck up a lot of power. Have tried GUI like Blackbox ? There's a lot of these GUI included with Mandrake, they can certainly run better and faster than KDE/Gnome on less powerful computer. 3) As others said, use the less demanding app. KOffice instead of OpenOffice, Firebird instead of Mozilla, etc...

The problem is whith the mirror. Please read this thread on the same subject.
  14. I have the same problem with my nvidia card: no video. I've done some research on this one and found out that the problem isn't with Mandrake but with the nv driver from XFree. The problem is that, sometime, nv driver wrongly recognize a CRT monitor as an LCD and results in no video. In facts, it's not a bug in the nv driver but in the monitor that report itself as a flat panel... To use the "nv" driver, I had to add the line: Option "FlatPanel" "0" in the XFreeConfig-4 file. For more details on this, you can look at bug report #523 on XFree Bugzilla There's also other similar reports. Hops this may help you find out what's going wrong with your video.
  15. I just found this site a few days ago: Exult. This is an engine that will let you play Ultima 7 on your linux box (or in fact, almost any other OS you want). I tried it with Mandrake 9.2 (downloaded the Red Hat rpm) and it works quite well. However, you will have to work out the config file of the game for your box. I was able to make U7 run not only without flaw, but it was even better than the original. The game will run in 800x600 (or whatever you choose) and the digital music (ogg files) sound much better than the original 8-bits mid file of the original game. Very fun game to discover or rediscover...
  16. BTW, is your Dell monitor a flat panel or a CRT ? It seems that the system identifies your screen as a LCD. It can cause problem if you have a CRT. If this is the case, the problem is easy to solve, only a parameter to add in XFConfig file.
  17. Try this: Type the following command: emacs /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 Now, find a line that looks like Driver "ATI" or Driver "Radeon". I'm not sure of the exact syntax because I have an nvidia card. Change the "ATI", "Radeon" or whatever it is with "vesa". Save the file by pressing CTRL-x followed by CTRL-c. Now, try startx. The GUI should start in VESA mode. Certainly not as good as with the correct driver, but you shuld at least be able to get to th econtrol panel and make modification and browse the web to download the drivers from ATI and install them. Good luck!
  18. Don't forget that with Crossover, silver level means "buggy, unstable, but we're working on it". It's certainly a question of philosophy that can be debated for hours... I will only point out that, on this level, two situations are possible: 1) Your application have a viable alternative in Linux. 2) Your application doesn't have anything that can do the job in Linux (many professionals or specialized applications can fit the bill here). For this thread, we're clearly in case #1. There are excellent and viable alternatives to MS-Office under Linux. If someone choose to use Windows applications when there's an alternative under Linux, it's probably because this person isn't ready to make the jump and is thus best to stick with Windows. Case #2 is different. But then, a dual boot system is probably the best way to go since it may to be hard to make these particular applications works under an emulator. But, thinking of it, if the GF already have Windows and MS-Office on her computer, why not just simply install Linux as a dual boot ? That way, she can work with MS-Office if she wants to, try Linux when she wants to, create document with OO and check them in Windows, see if the MS-Office documents import well in OO, etc... In short you will give her the best of both world, without the trouble of installing/configuring an emulator!!!
  19. Here's my 2 cents: First, according to Codeweavers Office XP isn't supported with Crossover Office. In fact, not one version of MS-Office is fully supported (Word, Excel, PowerPint, Access, Frontpage, Outlook, Publisher...). Second, Crossover Office cost 59.99$. OfficeXP already cost you at least a few hundreds dollars. Considering this, buying crossover office will not cost you much more... Third, if your main goal is to use MS-Office, just stick with Windows. It doesn't make much sense to install Linux to use MS apps designed to run under Windows. In the same way as it will not make any sense to install Windows because you want to run UNIX or Mac applications... Simply put, if you want to use Linux, you're much better to start using OO or any other software that works natively under Linux. It may sounds harsh, but it's only a question of being logical: run Windows apps under Windows, and run Linux apps under Linux...
  20. Hi, I have seen that there is NVidia rpms in the download section. Are these two rpms working with the stock linux kernel (the ones from the CD) ? Is the kernel driver rpm editing the XF86Config-4 file or you have to edit it manually ? Thanks!!!
  21. If it can help, if I have done a tutorial on that topic for the GUI of Mandrake: http://www.uselinuxathome.com/ENinstsoft.htm Hope it helps someone!
  22. For Java, my own tutorial is there: http://www.uselinuxathome.com/ENjava.htm So far, it works well for me... Let me know if it solves your problem...
  23. I had the same problem with the default nvidia driver in MDK9.1 and an Asus nVidia based video card. I had to install with the VESA driver and, once booted in MDK, installed the driver from nvidia.
  24. You may also found interesting information on www.uselinuxathome.com/ENinstsoft.htm
  25. You have to make sure you follow the directions @NVidia, I have a G4 Ti 4600 with 128 DDR on board (AGP) and it rocks using the 4191 drivers from NVidia. As long as you run export IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH=true before rebuilding the source RPMs, they will work properly, Then make sure /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 has the module for "glx" being loaded, Then make sure you change the line in same file, "nv" to "nvidia", Then reboot, you should be flying then. I have no problem at all with the downloaded "nvidia" driver. The problem is only with the default "nv" driver included on the CD.
