    security

While your worried about security and the kernel. What security fix's did the .24 fix on top of the little oops with permissions. Like bvc stated, are you sitting wide open to the world when your connected to the NET? If you are, you have more to worry about than one kernel problem. That's even if you have some kind of sensitive data on your box. 95% of hacking comes from script kiddies that have know idea what there doing so for the most part you don't have much to worry about. Firewall = yes, you better have one.
  3. Hate to be RTM, I rarely do that, but this will get you what you want. http://www.linuxdocs.org/HOWTOs/mini/FDU/truetype.html

    NVIDIA driver

Try using DOlson's tutorial for installing NVIDIA if you haven't already. http://pgshopping.com/mdkxp/?c=ttrls/nvidianew I've ran NVIDIA in RH/MDK/SuSE/Libranet/Debian/Slackware/Gentoo blahblahblah the list goes on. There is something your missing. I just installed NVIDIA drivers in SuSE last night and with an updated kernel it is the hardest distro to get them installed, as far as process. So there has to be something your missing in your XFree file. What's in your /var/log/nvidia?<something> messages? Did it actually say it installed the driver, or did you just flip through the messages with out reading? Is it possible your running kerenl and your kernel-source aren't the same? #uname -r # rpm -q kernel-source Even if you decide to go with RH or another distro, you should be able to get NVIDIA 3D running on any linux. So check over DOlson's guide, Look at your kernel & Kernel-source, Check you /var messages for nvidia-install <something like that> Post your XFree86-4 file. What ever you do, don't go back to winblows. You will hate yourselve for it in the morning!
  5. Pretty cheap compared to the rest of the distro's you have to buy!
  6. Just thought I would share a little snipit about the Evil Empire.

    No Doom III in 2003

During Activisions's financial quarterly conference call, company execs updated their 2003 release calendar and the long anticipated id Software first person shooter Doom III was not among the games planned for release this year. During the conference call, the execs stated that for planning purposes they have Doom III pencilled in for the fourth quarter 2004 fiscal year (Jan-March 2004) but added that id Software, not Activision, dictates when the game will finally be released. Activision also had other game titles that were announced as being delayed, including True Crime: Streets of LA, which will be delayed from September until later in the fall of 2003 and the Gray Matter first person shooter Trinity which will be moved into sometime into the fiscal year 2005 (which begins on April of 2004). Activision also announced that Rome: Total War, the console Call of Duty game and Quake IV are all currently scheduled to be released in the fiscal 2005 time period.
  13. This has some good security practices people should keep in mind while they have the power of root. http://www.freeos.com/articles/4628/?PHPSE...766d7525e8861eb
  14. I agree with you on there normal releases way's, I'm just here to say STOP it! j/k I just don't agree with them, but that's why they get paid the big bucks....
  15. Here's a link with some info. http://www.iexbeta.com/comments.php?catid=1&id=1302 I don't understand why MDK & RH are releaseing BETA's before kernel 2.6 or Gnome 2.4 and whatever KDE is working on. There doesn't seem to be any major components that have been updated to warrant a new release???????????????????????????????????????
  16. No nforce and I've tried the different configurations and I get's nothing. Currently I'm in Slack so I can burn some CD's iso's. I'll go back to Debain when I'm done. It takes all of about 15 minutes to install so it wont be hard to switch back. Just got to get those ISO's going!
  17. DOlson, I mean someone. I have Debian up and running, but LILO's menu wouldn't come up, just boot's into what ever kernel is there automatically. So I installed GRUB. Followed instructions from here: http://www.linuxorbit.com/modules.php?op=m...rtid=539&page=1 Everything looked fine, reboot and I get: Error 15: File not found Here is my menu.lst ## ## End Default Options ## title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.4.18-bf2.4 root (hd0,2) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-bf2.4 root=/dev/hda3 ro savedefault boot title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.4.18-bf2.4 (recovery mode) root (hd0,2) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-bf2.4 root=/dev/hda3 ro single savedefault boot ### END DEBIAN AUTOMAGIC KERNELS LIST /dev/hda1 = /boot /dev/hda3 = / I've tried changeing root (hd0,2) to root (hd0,0) also the line: /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-bf2.4 root=/dev/hda3 ro was originally: /vmlinuz*********blahblahblah But either way I've tried different way's to get it to work. Could reiserfs cause this? I'm on sid too. Anyone know why it breaks? I even went and made my own menu.lst file the way I have in Gentoo countless times and still no worky jerky. P.S. Good thing for a boot floppy.
  18. You might go this route http://digilander.libero.it/winehqitalia/ and use the winesetuptk package.
  19. Never mind the ISO question, I see a iso.list file being created.
  20. Anyone ever downloaded .jigdo images? "DOlson" I'm currently grabbing one for CD 1 of unstable and just wondering if you(anyone) had experience with it working. I know you have to install stable first and then you can upgrade via adding the new cd to apt-get. http://home.in.tum.de/~atterer/jigdo/#download http://www.debian.org/CD/jigdo-cd/ Does it create a ISO file in the end? I'm doing it from a winblows box @ work, now I can add another thing I do to a term in windows. ping ipconfig nmap nslookup & jigdo.

    Gnome 2.3.x

I never played with cooker so I don't know how much chance you have a breaking your system so maybe someone else out there is running cooker rpms???
  22. I think he stopped making them for SuSE.

  25. This is a good direction IMHO. http://rhl.redhat.com/ What is the Red Hat Linux Project? The goal of the Red Hat Linux project is to work with the Linux community to build a complete, general purpose operating system exclusively from free software. Development will be done in a public forum. The project will produce time-based releases of Red Hat Linux approximately every 4 to 6 months with a public release schedule. The Red Hat engineering team will continue to participate in the building of Red Hat Linux and will invite and encourage more outside participation than in past releases. By using this more open process, we hope to provide an operating system more in line with the ideals of free software and more appealing to the open source community. I would have put this into the Severn thread but I decided it needs it's own and might have a good discussion?
