  1. I got myself totally hosed last night by trying to install an nvidia driver from the nvidia site. I ended up with a kernel/driver mismatch that I couldn't resolve. I finally urpme'd everything nvidia and then urpmi'd the nvidia driver and went into mc/edit to change xorg.conf to "nv" instead of nvidia. So at least I could boot into 2009.0 with one of my two screens. So this morning, I tried to use Mandriva Control Center to get the appropriate nvidia (proprietery) driver and got myself hosed again. I think there may again be editing of the xorg.conf file needed (to go from "nv" to "nvidia"?) but I can't get there. The system is trying to boot into the graphical environment and I just end up with a cursor in the upper left corner, with no prompt or anything so that I can enter commands. So, I booted into safe mode and brought up mc but it doesn't display quite right. The little " [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  2. My cursor becomes less responsive over time. (nVidia GeForce 6600 GT (AGP), dual screen setup) I go to move it and it seems to think about it first. (2009.0, kde4) I wouldn't bother try to fix it though. There is so much wrong since this release came out that I just stopped trying to fix things. I either need to find a new distribution or wait a couple of years for kde4 to get as good as kde3 was. I should have reinstalled 2008.1, but just didn't have the energy to go through the download and reinstall process again.
  3. Ok, it looks like it works, but it just works differently. You used to be able to select a file to copy and then do a ctrl-c or select Copy from the right click menu and then just highlight the destination directory in the right pane and select Paste from the menu to paste into the selected directory. That no longer works. What does work though is to explode the destination directory in the right pane and then either to do a ctrl-v or click on an empty area of the directory. After clicking on an empty area of the directory the right click "Paste" menu item is changed to a right click menu item of "Paste one file" or "Paste n items." So, it seems the only difference is that one cannot just simply select the destination directory in the right pane, but rather must explode it to be able to copy into it.
  4. I still don't get it. I removed Klipper and still have the same non-functionality. I don't see anything in Klipper to allow a file to be pasted to a destination. I've never used Klipper and never had this problem before. I think I'll just have to learn to live with it -- just another capability that went away with 2009.0/kde4.
  5. Actually I think it is there. I think it is put there at installation time, because I didn't do it. Should I remove it? I'll have to check after I get home from work.
  6. I never did find a way to do that easily. It seems the new icon is always added to the right. To have it anywhere else, I had to delete the icons to the left of the new one, and then add them back in the left-to-right order that I wanted them to appear.
  7. Running 2009.0 with kde4 and when I go to paste in any file manager (konqueror, kfe, dolphin) the right click menu's paste function doesn't seem to work. I can do a Ctrl-V and it pastes ok. The cut and copy functions seem to be fine. Any ideas?
  8. I cleared out the logs to make it easier to find whatever my gps problem was, and then plugged in my Garmin 305 and guess what -- no problem. (The old Heisenberg issue attacks again.) Namely, when you go to look at the problem, the problem disappears. Sigh..... Anyway. # modinfo garmin_gps filename: /lib/modules/2.6.27.7-desktop-1mnb/kernel/drivers/usb/serial/garmin_gps.ko.gz license: GPL description: garmin gps driver author: hermann kneissel alias: usb:v091Ep0003d*dc*dsc*dp*ic*isc*ip* depends: usbserial, usbcore vermagic: 2.6.27.7-desktop-1mnb SMP mod_unload 686 parm: debug:Debug enabled or not (bool) parm: initial_mode:Initial mode (int) lsmod | grep gar garmin_gps 20740 0 usbserial 33768 1 garmin_gps agpgart 32840 2 nvidia,amd64_agp usbcore 138096 12 garmin_gps,usbserial,usb_storage,usbhid,snd_usb_audio,snd_usb_lib,uvcvideo,isp17 60,uhci_hcd,ohci_hcd,ehci_hcd Both of these commands were run after the Garmin had been disconnected. By the way, I also plugged in my digital camera and could not find it anywhere such that I could transfer pics to/from it. It is getting too late for me to research that further.
  9. After installing 2009.0 with kde4, keeping my home directory, plugging in a usb device (my Garmin 305) freezes the system. Any ideas? Prior to this new install I had just done an upgrade to 2009 and installed kde3 and usb worked fine.
  10. Just installed it. It is great. My only complaint is the lack of a built in Find File function. Nevertheless, I've made it my default file manager in 2009.0 with kde4.
  11. I think Linux is ok. You just need to stay away from Mandriva and kde4. My buddy just switched to PCLinuxOS. It seems to be rock solid and doesn't come with any of viruses like kde4.
  12. I have 2009.0 and kde3.5. But the kde4 virus is still on the system also. I don't dare urpme it because I'm afraid that it will destroy other parts of the system. There is still stuff that doesn't work, and every second or third time that I apply updates something else stops working. My buddy just moved away from Mandriva to PCLinuxOS because of this and urges me to do the same. I think he may have a point.
  13. Mandriva is infuriating. Can't they ever have an update that doesn't break stuff? After applying the updates to 2009.0 I can no longer use fish to access my web server. I get "Using sub-URLs with fish is not supported." If I use sudo konqueror, it brings up fish, but it seems it doesn't let me do anything. It acts like it is doing a copy from my local system to the host, but it doesn't really do anything at all. edit Getting rid of kde4 crap seems to have fixed this part. When will I ever learn not to apply Mandriva updates? Removing /usr/share/applications/kde4 seemed to remove the problem temporarilly, but rebooting brought the problem back again. Something somewhere is affecting this. I've removed all the kde4 junk I can find.
  14. The scanner is plugged into the router. sane-find-scanner says that "Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports can't be detected by this program." It didn't see it. It is being accessed though, because I can hear it come on and it sounds like it is scanning. It just seems like it can't send the data back.
  15. I get an error when trying to access my HP CM1017 all in one printer scanning function. I get the problem either using HP Device Manager (which uses xsane) or xsane itself. When I attempt to scan something, I hear the scanner being accessed, and it sounds like it is scanning. But then nothing. Eventually I'll get a popup box saying "Failed to start scanner: Error during device I/O." It takes a while before the popup displays, kind of like a timeout. Printing works fine. This is with 2009.0 and xsane 0.995 and HPLIP 2.8.10. Any ideas? /var/log/messages shows the following: Nov 8 17:15:08 localhost python: io/hpmud/jd.c 574: timeout read_channel sec=90 hp:/net/HP_Color_LaserJet_CM1017?ip=192.168.1.200 Nov 8 17:15:08 localhost python: http.c 188: timeout reading data sec_timeout=90 Nov 8 17:15:08 localhost python: bb_soap.c 714: unable to start dime document: hp:/net/HP_Color_LaserJet_CM1017?ip=192.168.1.200 Nov 8 17:15:10 localhost python: hp-scan[8200]: error: Error during device I/O Nov 8 17:15:10 localhost python: io/hpmud/hpmud.c 323: device_cleanup: device uri=hp:/net/HP_Color_LaserJet_CM1017?ip=192.168.1.200 Nov 8 17:15:10 localhost python: io/hpmud/hpmud.c 335: device_cleanup: close device dd=1... 16. I downloaded and ran the new (released Nov 4th) hplip-2.8.10.run file from HP to get the scanner working on my CM1017 all in one device. it almost goes well, however it wants libnetsnmp-devel to be installed, and there is only libnet-snmp-devel. I installed the latter, but when I go to try again, I still get the same error telling me to install libnetsnmp-devel. Is this a "hyphen" issue. Any ideas? Seems there was a dependency on which the urpmi was failing. (It gave me two sets of options and I selected the wrong combination.)
  17. I understand from another group that using mcc to turn off the splash screen shuld work as well as the following quote: "If your system boots only if you kill splashy by pressing esc, You can edit /boot/menu.lst and remove the line splash=silent from the boot parameter of the kernel that fails to boot."
  18. Bug 45552 has been opened on this. It has been requested that everyone who is experiencing it add a comment to the bug indicating hardware, etc. I'll do so when I get home.
  19. My mdkonline indicated an update to 2009.0 last night. These were kernel related items and I installed them. Now when I bring up the system it hangs at the splash screen that displays the progress bar. The progress bar does not move. If I hit the ESC key, it will flip over to text mode and then start to process the startup commands. It will just sit there before I hit the ESC key. So far the longest I've waited for it to do anything is 15 minutes. Should I go back to my previous grub entry or is there a way to fix this hang? I see on the Mandriva forum that others have experienced this also, but no one has yet offered a solution.
  20. This is really bizarre. I went into konqueror and brought up the Web Browsing profile and opened a web page correctly. Then I closed konqueror and opened it up again using file management as the profile. Now, even though I am in a file manager view, web pages again display correctly. Whatever the issue was, it was fixed by accessing a web page one time in the Web Browsing view.
  21. Something screwy with konqueror. I put in a url and I get source code displayed instead of the web page. If instead, I try a fish url as in: "fish://root@27.225.96.187/usr/local/tomcat/webapps/" I get a popup that says "Using sub-URLs with fish is not supported." I must have broken something when I added the "Find" item to the toolbar. So, at the moment I can't transfer files back and forth to my web site.
  22. Yep, Ctrl F worked, and so I was able to add it to a toolbar. Never could find out how to put it back where it was on the Tools menu, but that doesn't matter. Thanks much for the help. :)
  23. I seem to have lost something. There used to be a "Find" menu item in the Tools menu in konqueror. (At least I think it was the Tools menu.) It is gone. I don't know what I did to lose it. It was useful. Anybody have a clue about how to get it back? This is on 2009.0, but running kde3 (or actually probably a mishmash of 3 & 4.)
  24. I used to use the mondo/mindi backup suite which makes a bootable dvd. It has kind of stopped working after moving to 2009.0. Namely, the dvd is no longer able to be booted. However, I forgot that the dvd was in the drive and brought up VirtualBox and then brought up WinXP. WinXP booted from the dvd! Interesting that Mandriva 2009.0 can't boot from the dvd, but WinXP can. Of course, the dvd still isn't right. Instead of just doing a regular boot from the dvd it gets to a point when it wants a boot floppy to be inserted. I don't have a floppy drive, so something with the mondo/mindo suite or 2009.0 is screwed up. (Obviously, in the bios, the dvd is listed as the first bootable device.)
  25. Thanks for the response, but I'll hold off until I can create a backup that I can boot from. If I get my system wiped out, I want to be sure that I can restore back to bare metal. For some reason, since the move from 2008.1 to 2009.0, I can no longer boot from the backups made by the mondo/mindi suite.
