  1. Thunderbird and Firefox got updated to 1.0.6 just after couple of days 1.0.5 release. Shouldn't they test the release of version 1.0.5 in the first place? [moved from Talk-Talk by spinynorman]
  2. Did you mean here? I have windows install in drive C. ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts Does the font look about right to you? To me it looks small.
  3. I use Agent Newsreader with Wine great but the only side effect is the font being crooked. How do I fix this. I installed bunch of windows font using Font Installer in Configuration-> KDE->System. I also configure to use 100DPI font as on this website instructions. What else can I do? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  4. Here's my first snap shot on this forum. The taskbar looks like windows which I don't like. I need to do somthing about it.
  5. Thanks for the tip. Great that's what I want. It's not that i don't like Kwrite over Gedit. They all the same to me when it comes to editing. The beep is that Kwrite is a little annoying. Everytime I open a file, it opens up a window and checking somehing before it loads the acutall file. This bogs me down when I am in a little hurry. Besides, I type gedit command faster than I type kwrite. Hehehhe....
  6. I want to ask only a question: Did you run the script "install_browser_plugin" to install plugin for your browser that come with Acrobat7.0 which I believe it's located in /usr/local/Adobe/Acrobat7.0/Browser folder by default installation of Acrobat? If your anwser is YES, that might be the problem you're experiencing. It happened to me before exactly what you described and i couldn't figured why. I don't know how many times I install and reinstall LE2005 in the past month, I tried Acrobat Reader 5 instead of 7. In version 5, there is no install_browser_plugin script so I had to do it myself by making link to the plugin in firefox folder and exporting path to acroread. Amazingly it works..... Since I do a lot of install and reinstall LE2005 in the past month, I had the oportunity to try one more time with Acobat 7.0 but this time I did exactly as what I have done with Reader5.0. And it works.
  7. I am running into the problem that I need some help to basically asfxload soundfont automatically every reboot. Everytime I restart the computer, I have to type manually asfxload soundfont.sf2 in the terminal so that Kmid can play midi file. Otherwise, it just won't play (can't hear sound) I have tried to put following lines asfxload -i asfxload soundfont.sf2 into ~/.bash_profile as instructed in one of the thread above as well as /etc/profile file but these just don't do well and seem not to load it automatically. I still have to type it in manually in the terminal. I keep my soundfont.sf2 in /usr/share/sounds/sf2 folder so that asfxload will automatically look into that directory. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
  8. How do we make gedit instead of Kwrite default editor in KDE which associated with Konqeror?
  9. I want to install one of those bars just for easily access to commonly used links like firefox, mail program and media player, etc..... and remove kicker menu since I am bulding this system for public usage. I use KDE and LE2005 One more concern is that whether one of these bar will hog all resource of the system?
  10. Is the theme manager for KDE installed by default in LE2005? I try to look in the menu LookNFeel only to see "Style" Or is it hidden somewhere that we have to enable it for it to show? I'd like to try out KDE to see if I like it.
  11. Anyway, I changed back to snd-emu10k1 as the driver of my soundcard since it's the ALSA driver. What I selected before in my first post turned out to be that I am using OSS driver. Then based on the information on this page http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=emu10k1 , I inserted couple of paramaters for my soundcard module configuration as folowing: extin: 0x0003 extout: 0x1f03 seq_port: 4 max_synth_voices: 64 mx_buffer_size: 128 As root, I type these lines in ternimal. Copy from http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-30963.html Honestly, I don't know what above lines means. If someone cares to explain, I am glad to hear. Then I continue the tips and trick using asfxload command to load the soundfont into memory. $ asfxload /opt/8MBGMSFX.SF2 It just works perfectly.
  12. I follow these thread to set up MIDI playable computer https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=22604 and http://www.mandrivaclub.com/article.php?sid=979 In step one: I used harddrake to select emu10k1 as the driver for the card. Step 2: find/get the soundfond.sf2 online from Trachtman.net Step 3: Use the sfxload /path/tomysoundfont.sf2 returns What does this mean? Does this meant that I have no sequencer installed? 13. You still do it couple of times if you document things. It's just that you don't have to go back online searching for solutions
  14. As I said before, I compile it from the souce and still somehow it doesn't solve the problem. Starting a program takes forever. You know what I mean. DragonMage, maybe it's just hardware problem conflict that causes the problems. When I compiled it from source, I installed both libgtk+ and it devel packages and start the program from command line. Anyway, I removed it completely from my computer with associated packages and libraries. I installed Beep Media Player (look and feel the same as XMMS, not to mention that it's even better in term of sound quality) Here are the packages that I install in order from contrib for Beep Media Player libid3_3.8_3-3.8.3-7mdk.i586 (from main) libbeep-media-player2-0.9.7-6mdk.i586 beep-media-player-0.9.7-6mdk.i586 beep-media-player-extra-plugins-0.2.2-2mdk.i586 beep-media-player-esd-0.9.7-6mdk.i586 Problems SOLVED. Thanks all. Marked the thread Solved - Artificial Intelligence
  15. It's wise and safe pratice to document everything you install, modify to system file. And back-up all the files you rpm onto difffernt partition thus saving you a lot of time later on when your system goes ballooning up. When I install a package or compile something from source. I document every procedure, what's first and what's next, and every notes associated with installtion. Then I save/backup everything onto different partition which is a FAT32 share partition between windows and linux. Just in case, I want to reinstalled Mandrake, I go back and repeat exactly what I have successfully done before without having going online searching for solutions. :-) Cheers
  16. I know this problem has been solved. But here are my thoughs and solutions just in case some people might run into the same. I run firefox but couldn't browse the web but root has no problem browsing. As user, I look at $HOME/.mozilla folder and it's maked as root folder. No wonder the bloddy thing won't browse the web. Log in as root and deleted $HOME/.mozilla folder. Log out and login as user to creat the same folder .mozilla. Firefox starts up perfectly. Like arctic said, it'd rather be a permision issue.
  17. By default, my IME is configured correctly by Mandrake both in 10.1 and LE2005. It's just screwed up when I do install driver for my ATI radeon 9800 card which affects /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. When I finish installing ATI driver I don't see any apparent improvement for my 2D desktop performance. So I just forget about ATI driver.
  18. Yeah, I find that the menu are inconsistent as well. I added Firefox in the menu using menudrake, click save. OK, it's' on there as I can see it when it's done updating. Then I logout and relog-in. it's gone. and sometime if I got lucky, Firefox icon appears. I think it's a glitch with Gnome or something therefore I don't rely much on that menu. I am with LE2005. I don't know if it's like that in 10.1 though.
  19. Anwyay, I removed the xmms-1.2.10-16mdk.i586.rpm and libxmms associated with it. Recompiled from source an installed it into /usr/local/xmms Now it's almost fixed since the program still takes considerable amount of time to load. (about 30s or more.... really boring waiting) I suspect it loads something that's not available and timeout but I really don't know that for sure. How do we instlall somehing to support midi input when you compile from source? When I do installing from the LE2005 package it's just a matter of rpm xmms-midi pagekage and other depencies like timidity++ packages but from source it's a bit different I believe.
  20. It's like for LE2005 doesn't install that on dedualt. Almost every other program you need that package
  21. Oh no! I just log-in Outlook and guess what can't send mail either. It turns out to be that my Rogers ISP is blocking it preventing from people sending SPAM using outsider senidng mail server. I have been adviced and forced to use ISP SMTP send mail server. This just happens recently though. Problems solved. Marked the thtread Solved - Artificial Intelligence
  22. I second this considering the fact that LE2005 installs in about 15-20 min with OpenOffice unselected.
  23. Ok I want to randomize splash screen for my Gnome and I found this link http://gnome-hacks.jodrell.net/hacks.html?id=55 In the instruction, it says that I need to: "copy it to your gnome-autostart folder" I dont' know any of gnome-autostart folder, where it's located, and how to run the script. Could someone show step by step how to or a link in this forum? Also, how do I hide floppy mount or some how disable the icon from the desktop. I know there's an option is GConf Editor where you can hide the My computer and Home icon but not the floppy. I use modubar in adesklets program and I want make a icon with a link to log-out. I have the icon there already but what's is the log-out comand for that icon? Thanks.
  24. Updated: From previous post, I want to try something else. I deleted /usr/lib/thunderbird folder as root and $HOME/.thunderbird preference folder. Then extreact thunderbird.tar file to ~$HOME/.mozilla/thunderbird to deal with file permission. To start a program I give a command: /home/<username>/.mozilla/thunderbird/thunderbird Program pops-up fine and setup again as in my previous post. Unfortunately, the program is still not solved. the same error message appears: "The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server mail.myhost.com failed. Ther server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your SMTP server setting is correct and try again, or else contact your network administrator." Again I can still retrieve new mails no problems. Setup new out going mail server to Site5.com and still no luck. I am beat.
  25. Most steps taken were outlined in the original post Installed LE2005 without Internet Program [ticked] cause I don't want to use Evolution and outdated Mozilla Firefox Then download Thunderbird from mozilla website (actually I have this file located on my harddirve already) Then as root extract thunderbird.tar file to /usr/lib/thunderbird To start thunderbird, I give a command: /usr/lib/thunderbird/thunderbird The program pops-up and I setup email account as following: POP mail server: mail.myhost.com Port 110 Username: myname@myhost.com SMTP Outgoing Server: Server: mail.myhost.com Port: 25 Username and password: (ticked) User myname@myhost.com Password is controlled and saved as correct one since I am able to retrieve mails without a problem. I have contacted Tech support at iPowereweb. They advice me to try different e-mail client (which I dont like because I want to use thunderbird) better yet a different OS because they have tested on their end that everything is working properly. I believe them since it's working OK under Outlook Express both sending and retrieving mails. The outlines here are mostly default. Just a freshly installed LE2005 and thunderbird. Do you have any idea? I haven't tried with a different distros since now I am hooked to LE2005 I suspect that since I install/extract thunderbird.tar file as root to /usr/lib/thunderbird some file ares restricted by user account in /usr/lib/thunderbird The reason I extract the tar file to /usr/lib/thunderbird is that I don't want to install in ~/$HOME/useraccount/thunderbird for every user. I might head to thunderbird forum but then most are windows user there. This is straight from Mozilla website " If you install Thunderbird on a multi-user system in an area in which there is restricted access privileges, you must run Thunderbird as a user with access to that location upon installation so that all initial startup files are generated. If this is not done, when a user without write access to the install location attempts to start Thunderbird, they will not have sufficient privileges to allow Thunderbird to generate the initial startup files it needs to operate."
