  1. ^^I agree. I have been using Linux for just over a month now, when I first started I did have a lot of problems but after a bit of research and a lot of help off this forum, my linux box has never run so smoothly. And as a few people said before, Linux never was, and never will be a windows clone. What would be the fun in using a different OS if it was the same as what you had before?

  2. I want to give suse a go, but i don't want to completely remove my Mandriva installation to do so. I had a search about and I read that people have problems running another distro along side Mandriva. What is the best way for me to go about installing suse 9.2 alongside Mandriva without the 2 conflicting with each other? Or any other Distro for that matter :)

    Thanks a lot!

  3. Sorry I ent got back sooner, it sometimes works for a few days then will just dive... Well I did the modprobe commands - no errors. And I have added me to the audio group. It seems the same when as root.

Also, sometimes, I'll log on, there won't be an X but the sound will still not work properly. If I change the engine in Amarok I can sometimes get some audio or I just reboot and hope for the best.

What could be causing this rather odd problem?

  4. I've done a few searches and went on imagemagick's site but they haven't documented anything about applying commands to whole folders/multiple images. Surely, you can apply commands to a whole folder of images? I want to rotate about 100 images by 90 degress and I don't really want to do each individually. Anyone know how I can apply it to all images at once?

    Thanks :)

  5. Sometimes, when I boot my laptop, SE2005 fails to load my sound card, so the mixer icon has a large red "X" on top of it and claims there is no audio device. Sometimes if I reboot it will see it, other times it won't. It is an ATI card, I think the driver was snd-atiixp. Any idea what may be going on?

    Thanks a lot :)

  6. When booting the system, the progress bar stops for ages, then the lights on my wireless card come on then it continues. So as far as I can tell, it seems to be having some form of difficulty booting the card. Is there anyway I can quicken up the boot time because it never use to take this long when I used 10.1 OE.

    Thanks a lot :)

  7. Now before you all scream "Are you insane?!" the answer is no! haha, basically, when I installed Mandriva, there was an option to have no root password, but I chose to have a password. In retrospect, I should have just gone with no password because it does my head in having to keep on typing my password in. I am the only one using the laptop and it is passworded on boot so it's secure enough for my needs. How can I completely turn off the root password so I can just type "su" and then straight to root without the "Password:" message? Thanks!

  8. My laptop, while running Linux, gets extremely hot really fast. Where as on Windows, after prolonged use it does get warm but only after a much longer period. I ent so much asking for a fix, but is this wise to keep doing? I mean will I be doing my laptop harm by using Linux if it gets that hot? If there is a way to keep it cool, then great, but if not, as long as it ent damaging my laptop it's ok.

    Any ideas/comments?

  9. ARGH!! I managed to get it to start installing again, but it failed again so i tried to install is using them RPMs on this forum. Done the URPMI command on the 10.2 folder and now I can't get on Linux! I just get this screen, it's a white box, with "WElcome to Linux Localhost" it then has a clock underneath, some commands on the far left, and then a log in screen. The keyboard doesn't work in this box. But if I restart the X server from an option in this window it some times lets me type. I log in but it just returns to that screen. What can I do?

Also, if I get a command prompt up from boot, if I type "startx" I get some error about missing a font or something.

  10. Yes, libqt3-devel is installed. I did what you said above and got this:

    [root@localhost edd]# urpmi libqt3-devel
    The package(s) are already installed
    [root@localhost edd]# urpmf libqt-mt
    libqt3:/usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.la
    libqt3:/usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.prl
    libqt3:/usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so.3
    libqt3:/usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so.3.3
    libqt3:/usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so.3.3.4
    libqt3-devel:/usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so
    libqt3:/usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.la
    libqt3:/usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.prl
    libqt3:/usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so.3
    libqt3:/usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so.3.3
    libqt3:/usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so.3.3.4
    libqt3-devel:/usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so
    libqt3:/usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.la
    libqt3:/usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.prl
    libqt3:/usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so.3
    libqt3:/usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so.3.3
    libqt3:/usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so.3.3.4
    libqt3-devel:/usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so
    [root@localhost edd]# urpmq qt-devel
    PyQt-devel
    [root@localhost edd]# rpm -qa|grep libqt
    libqtc1-3.3.2-2mdk
    libqtc1-devel-3.3.2-2mdk
    libqt3-devel-3.3.4-7.1.102mdk
    libqt3-3.3.4-7.1.102mdk
    libqt3-pch-headers-3.3.4-5mdk

Could any of that make a difference?

Thanks for the help so far :)
