The install instructions I read made it clear that 1.1 and 2 can coexist happily.

 

Thanks Neddie. I have downloaded and extracted ? the tarball OOo_2.0.1_src.tar.gz. Into my home folder (because I know where it is :D ). I now have a folder ¨OOA680_ml¨ which has loads of other folders -see screenshot. I have tried to find an RPM file but without any luck - I¨ve searched high and low for the ¨directory with the unpacked image¨.

 

Have I got the right tarball - I hope so (it took me 17 hours on a dial up comnnection )

If so does anyone know which folder I should CD to?.

Is the command <rpm -Uvih *rpm>?

If not what should I do ?

 

By the way as a newbie to linux I find using Konqueror with a split screen and terminal window very helpful when I am trying to do this stuff.

I have just read a review on Open Office 2 and because it now has a database in the suite I would like to upgrade from Open Office 1. I probably should know the answer to this question by now but:

 

Can I download and install OOo2 over the top of OOo1 or do I have to uninstall OOo1 first? Advice on any potential pitfalls would be appreciated.

Don´t give up Wakish! I have had Mandrake 10.1 running on a dedicated pentiium 3 PC now for about a year and if you care to check my posts you will see that I have had a few problems myself.

I installed from a set of CDś I got with a linux magazine - December 2005 issue of Linux Magazine has a free version of Mandriva. The magazine costs Six pounds (I am in OZ where the use $ :D )

I am now at the stage where I am really getting a buzz out of using Linux. I think you are on the right tram with Mandriva.

I also have had trouble with ADSL but after 2 weeks I found out I had a faulty modem :P . When I get it back from the supplier I will get it up and running! The answers to many problems are not always the first ones that come to mind.

MCC is great, so is Urpmi and I am just beginning to discover some of the delights of Konqueror - a fitting name for this mighty peice of software! Good luck

I have just read an interesting article about this programme synCE in Linux Magazine. I have an ipaq (I am a windows slave at work) and would like to sync my stuff into KOrganiser, however after doing some research on the net it looks much more complicated than the magazine article suggested. Has anyone been able to get this application up and running on Mandrake 10.1?

Yes. The description of the unit is - Ethernet/USB ADSL Modem with Integrated router & 10/100 4-port switch¨

It came with a CD containing USB drivers for Win 98/Me/2000/XP & Mac OSX only. However it will run under Linux (see attached specs). http://www.netcomm.com.au/ADSL/adsl.php#NB13004

It can be configured under Windows via a wizard or manually through a browser.

The modems factory defaults are:

LAN IP Address 192.168.11, LAN Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0, DHCP Server - enabled, Main Function - Router(bridge disabled), WAN Connection type: PPPoE LLC, VPI: 8, VCI: 35.

Under Windows it can be set up as USB or Ethernet Modem or USB or Ethernet Gateway router.

Out of interest I did connect it via USB and MCC Hardware picked it up as ¨Unknown other¨

Can someone point me to the right ¨how to¨ to set up this device for ADSL. I have an ethernet card that I know can be picked up by MCC but which I have just disabled, and an active ADSL account. I am hoping to share this connection (via ethernet card) with a windows 98 box eventually. I have been round the block a few times with this and decided it was time to call for help. I am posting this via dial up connection on the Linux box. During one of my attempts to get this working Mandrake (10.1) downloaded and installed PPPoe and another package which I can´t recall.

 

I have been trying to set up via the ethernet card as opposed to usb route. Help!

Thank you - what a terrific site. I ran the checks and everything was OK. I now feel I have a better understanding of how my linux system is interacting with the Net.

Thank you all once again. I now have no X´s in any of the check boxes. This means (if I am not mistaken) that

 

1) I can send and receive ¨stuff¨ (like screenshots :D ) to and from the internet, but

2) no one on the internet can get at any of my stuff on this machine (like the password to my Swiss safety deposit box :D ) despite the fact that they can send me stuff (like email with attachments).

Thank you everyone for your replies. I have started researching all your suggestions. I have attached a screenshot from MCC - Firewall. Please excuse my naivette, but from what I have read so far I could do without the FTP and Web server boxes being checked. I am not sure about SSH server. I only use this machine to surf the net and email . Am I correct in my assumption?

I have been using Linux on a second home PC for about one year and am going through the learning curve that most newcomers to Linux experience. It´s no big deal when I think about the havoc I created on several work PCś when I was introduced to Windows (3.1) some years ago.

 

On my windows box at home I run a firewall, antivirus software and, spyware blaster, and spybot. It is a time consuming business but has paid off - I have had one virus in 10 years which Vet picked up and had IE hijacked once which was a very annoying and disturbing experience.

 

Everything I have read tells me how safe Linux is - great. But on my windows box I feel as if I would know if the system was being compromised (I know i might be deluding myself :D ) but hey it makes me feel comfortable.

 

To be honest I wouldn´t have a clue what is going on in my Linux box and I´m not the sort of person that would settle for ¨trust me¨.

 

I think it would be good if there was a ¨security check list¨ for newbies to LInux. Is there such an animal? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you for your replys. I t appears to have sorted itself out. I tried everything yesterday but couldn´t get it to work. Come to think of it my box did a couple of strange things yesterday - like I lost the user and location text in terminal windows. Any way since I fired it up again today everything is OK. By the way - for future reference how do I determine what file system the USB key us formatted in - sad to say I don´ know how to do this?

I have a USB key which I use to transfer files from a Windows box to my Linux box. I have just realised that I can´t write to the key from my Linux box. Is this possible - if so how do I go about it?

That really is very odd... anyone have ideas?

I fixed it by uninstalling XIne through the Mandrake control centre. I searched for Xine and removed only the packages that didn´t appear to have any ¨none xine¨ dependencies. Wnen I had done this I found I could play AVI and WMV files through Mplayer - good - that is what started all this!

But still no streaming video so I downloaded and installed Firefox to see if this made any difference - no :D. So i uninstalled Real Player and re installed it using RealPlayer10Gold.rpm. (which I had done previously - twice) and voila I can now watch the RAM files from the BBC once again!

 

One strange side effect - although I am in KDE the appearance of my desktop has changed to look like the default Gnome desktop.

I like your sense of humour! :D . Actually it was working'(see my previous posts) but I fixed it - just don´t know how. I am using Mozilla 1.7.2 and Konqueror 3.2.3 (using KDE 3.2.3).

I think the problem started either when I installed Xine and MPlayer to try to get an AVI file to run. I suspect this is a KDE issue because both browsers will run a video stream if I switch to a Gnome desktop at log on.

I have lost the ability to watch video streams on my KDE desktop. ¨About:plugins¨ appears to show all the correct plugins as being installed (see below). The strange thing is they will run from any browser if I switch to a Gnome desktop. Any suggestions? (apart from if it works don´t fix it) :D

Thank you all. I am certainly learning about how to change directories and the importance of spaces in linux terminal commands. As you can see below I seem to have a number of Mozilla folders on this computer.

Before I go to plan B which is to download and install the latest version as suggested by ianw1974, (bearing in mind I have got Java applets loading in Konqueror with this version), is there anything wrong with what I have done in this latest series of attemps?
