OK - I urpmed and urpmid :) and the result was exactly what you said it would be - no loss of messages and no change in the behaviour of Evo. One thing I have noticed any messages I send to myself go to both Evo and Kmail - this never happened previously so I must have some sort of share set up for my mail. I did manage to delete one file that said it was somthing like "just a link". - perhaps there is another one somewhere - where would I look for that? Any ideas?

Thanks coverup. Ive taken that deep breath. More info. I have two accounts on both Kmail and Evo - lets call them A & B In Kmail I can send mail from A to B and vice versa with no hassles. In Evo I can send mail from A or B to hotmail with no hassles. In Evo If I try to send mail from A to B it sends quickly but takes quite a long time to download it into B. If I send mail from B to B then it sends it quickly but takes maybe 10 minutes to receive it during which time the hard drive is spinning and I cannot do anything else on the computer. Evo was working fine (till I solved my problem which was transferring my messages from Kmail to Evo :D ). So I don´t think its the same problem you have experienced. I forgot to tell you :D that I did have a problem with Kmail after I "fixed"Evo - I had a pile of folders in the folder bar that I hadn´t seen before so I deleted them :D . Kmail then fixed itself by doing something like generating some mailboxes. I think I have got a bodgey sim link and I have probably broken Evo (sad to say) - I think by deleting those Kmail folders (perhaps Evo is looking for them). Is this terminal - I hope not because my "saved" messages are now in Evo not Kmail. What would happen if I urpme Evo then urpmi it - would I loose the existing messages?

Back again people - I spoke tooo soon. Kmail is still working fine but Evolution is running like a dog when I send and receive. It takes about ten minutes to download when I send an email to myself. The hard disk starts spinning and what ever is going on is taking over the whole machine. I tryed deleting the account I had set up to transfer my messages, and then I deleted the shared mail folder but to no avail. Do I have to remove the symbolic link - If so how do I do that? Help!

Well - In my usual bungling way I appeared to have done what I set out to do :). Because I didn´t read coverup´s post before I started doing what Tyme suggested I sort of got into difficulties when I decided I would switch to Thyme´s method. Here is what I did: From Tyme´s method: We'll create a new set of mailbox directories using the simpler KMail scheme. Create a new directory by typing mkdir Shared from the command line. Next, type mv Mail Shared/ to move your mail from your KMail Mail directory to the new Shared directory. Finally, type ln –s Shared/Mail Mail to create a symbolic link to the new, shared mailbox. Then I got scared where it says : "Once you've copied any messages you want to keep, you need to delete the /evolution/local.inbox/mbox directory and create a symbolic link to the proper directory in your shared mailbox. To create the proper symbolic link, type ln –s ~/Shared/Mail/inbox ~/evolu tion/local/inbox/mbox to create a symbolic link to your shared inbox." So I didn´t and decided to swithch to coverups method. But I kept on getting these messages saying ¨blah blah blahh is not a mail box¨ So I started tinkering and changed the Receiving Mail Settings in Evolution to Server Type = Maildir-format mail directories and the Configuration to : Path = /home/username/Shared/.Mail (where username is my firstname incase anyone as challenged as me is reading this :)) Then I hit send and receive - I saw the folder panel saying ΅Loading" and my hard drive spinning and voila all my folders (and messages) from Kmail appeared in the new account. I am very happy because of this but even happier with Linux because I haven´t been able to break it (yet). I am sure if I tried this stuff in windows I would have ended up in all sorts of strife. I would like to try Evolution as a PIM and want to transfer all my email messages from Kmail. I have gone thriught the Wizard in Evolution without any success. I get through the whole process but when I hit finish" no result. I am beginning to wander if I am trying to transfer files from the correct location - the only directory that the Wizard is happy with is kde/share. I have googled for help on this without any luck. Does anyone know the correct procedure? Any help would be appreciated.

Does anyone think it is worth explaining to Melchizedeck (what a great handle!) how konqueror can be used as a file manager with split screens and a terminal window? I am finding that this helps me make the transition from windows (as well as all the help I get from you guys :) ). Seeing what was going on in the system when you change directories in the address bar and when you open files with a mouse from the split windows was an eye opener to me. PS I will understand if anyone tells me to be quiet. :D

I installed Firefox in my home folder - the path is home/name/firefox/firefox. I have added firefox on to the system menu via MCC but it doesn´t appear in the menu panel in KDE. I can open it from a terminal by entering <firefox/firefox> but then if I close that terminal window by accident the browser closes down also. I don´t understand why this is but it is a bit of a nuisance. Can anyone tell me how to fix this please? [moved from talk-talk by tyme]

Yes, it makes sense to me. Next time, you can alternatively kill nautilus, by launching "top" in a terminal. It will list all processes with a corresponding process number. With launching e.g. "kill 5915" you would kill the PID process 5915, (in this case firefox). Thanks again

This is a bit off topic but do you use Opera? as you seem to use ¨ for ", which strangely enough happens to me in Opera under Mandriva but not Ubuntu... I´m not sure what you mean by using ¨for¨ but I don´t use opera - I use Firefox (and sometime Mozilla and sometimes Konqueror - I love free choice

OK Arctic the problem is solved. This is how it came about. I set up a new account like you suggested but I still encountered the same problem so I started thinking about what I had done lately that might have triggered this ¨Two desktops on one session situation¨ (Don´t you love that :D ). Anyway I remebered wandering what the ¨start new session¨ thingy on the menu did and of course clicking it - I thought nothing happened at the time?? Well after some delving I found out that you could switch between sessions by executing shortcuts like control F7, control F8 etc. So (in a KDE session) working backwards from F8 - I discovered that sometimes I got the three Gnome default icons on the desktop (Computer, Home and Wastebin) and sometimes none at all. Then I thought I wander what will happen if I press Control Escape - so I did - and up popped the KDE system guard! And there lurking in amongst all those running processes was the culprit you had identified in you last post namely Nautilus. Then I noticed that there was a button called Kill. So I highlighted Nautilus and hit the button! Then I restarted the computer and KDE came up as its old self which made me very happy. And now when I open the KDE system guard - Nautilus is nowhere to be seen. Voila. Thank you Arctic. Does this make any sense to you? :D

the .ICEauthority was not a root file so I renamed it. Then I logged off and tried to log back in to a KDE session but I got a message half way through the routine saying that KDE couldn´t be loaded because the KDE/tmp folder was full and there wasn´t enough disc space - so I rebooted and the I got the KDE / Gnome weird behaviour :D . As it happened I had a terminal session on the kicker so I opened it and the back ground was the KDE desktop. :huh: I am not sure what to do or where to remove the gnome and KDE files from. :P

My desktop seems to have taken on a mind of its own. When I login to a KDE session the KDE splash screen and start up routine is displayed - the tray loads ( I like having stuf in the tray) then the desktop background changes to a Gnome desktop. If I right clik on the desktop a terminal window opens. Everything else seems to be working fine. I thought I would try logging into an ICEWM session to see if this would in some mystical way fix the problem :D but it didn´t :) But I did get a message about DCOP server not being installed when I tried to fire up kmail (evolution worked fine). This happened to me once before but it fixed itself - I don´t think its going to this time. Any advice would be appreciated.

On a more serious note :D I just opened that bludger up. I usually just stare blankly at it because I haven´t got a clue how to use it BUT I noticed on the menu bar at the top it had <emacs@192.168.1.1>. That is the IP address of my modem router yes? Is this normal? :mellow:
