    Evolution 1.2

Hello again. After some connection problems I finally got a good enough connect to try getting Texstar's Evolution 1.2.0 again. I used urpmi evolution as cmd btw, urpmi then downloaded 21mb of files ( I managed to copy them out of /var/cache/rpms/ before quitting as su and saved them so I might not have to go through another huge download) But, I get the following error: I want to use gnucash but could uninstall and reinstall but how do I work around this problem with libgal.so.19 ? This is where I am stumped and don't know how to proceed. Can someone please help me know what I am doing wrong, or what I need to do to resolve this?

    Evolution 1.2

May I be bold and ask how you two got version 1.2 to run? I had all sorts of problems trying. I am running 9.0 and would like to get Evolution upgraded as there are some odd bugs in 1.0.8 that came with ML9. I'm definitely a newbie, but willing to give it another go. Maybe my mistake was doing an install instead of upgrade? Did you use urpmi and Texstar's version? Or is there another way to go that is better? Thanks for any pointers you care to share!
  4. Think I got it fixed. Here is how: Found a link that helped: http://www.twuug.org/lists/twuug/2002-11/msg00059.html Deleted hdlist file that was corrupted. Then was able to add new media and proceed as normal using urpmi cmds. Hope this helps someone else get out of the problem quicker!
  5. Appreciate all the past help for this newbie. I have surfed for hours both web and newsgroups, and haven't found my fix yet. Tried to run rpm --rebuilddb and got a segment fault error and now have new problems showing up. Both Mandrake update and urpmi seem affected. Earlier I tried removing "update_source" but cannot remove the whole entry in Software Sources Manager. Just removed the entry details and left it empty. Anyone got any ideas how this newbie can get out of this mess? Thanks!
  6. Still scratching my head: This was done using Konsole terminal in su mode. I don't understand why I cannot "see" the files __db.001 and .002 but the "locate" cmd gives me a location for them. As you can see, the ls command does not show them and when I tried to rm them I get an error "no such file" So either my syntax is wrong, or I don't understand the "locate" cmd. My ancient DOS skills are not helping much either.
  7. Getting late here and I am starting to make mistakes. bvc: Thanks again for help with this- I looked in var/lib/rpm and at first didn't see the files using Konqueror in SU mode even with Hidden files turned on... but I did find two files by doing a locate cmd in the directory! Not sure why I cannot see them with GUI file mgr though? Here they are: Are those the __db.0 files you referred to? I left them alone because I don't want to reek havoc with my newbie guesses, though it is fun figuring all this out. The ftp1u thing is not shown in Software Sources Manager -- I checked it out by looking at the entries for the other items. I think when I installed the first update didn't work as it got timed out. That reference might be a piece of that aborted update. I'll shut down shortly as I am too groggy to be much good at troubleshooting tonight. Anon: Thanks for your input. I had just seen that post and took a look. Seems like just what we newbies need to get us going so we can learn how to do things ourselves.
  8. I have tried to figure out what I am doing wrong and no luck so far. Tried urpmi evolution and after downloading a ton of files from texstar, got this error: FINISHED --21:54:57-- Downloaded: 9,356,825 bytes in 6 files The following packages have bad signatures: /var/cache/urpmi/rpms/bonobo-1.0.21-1tex.i586.rpm /var/cache/urpmi/rpms/aspell-0.50.2-2tex.i586.rpm /var/cache/urpmi/rpms/gtkhtml-1.1.6-1tex.i586.rpm /var/cache/urpmi/rpms/libgal21-0.21-4tex.i586.rpm /var/cache/urpmi/rpms/libsoup3-0.7.4-1tex.i586.rpm /var/cache/urpmi/rpms/evolution-1.2.0-5tex.i586.rpm /var/cache/urpmi/rpms/libgtkhtml1.1_3-1.1.6-1tex.i586.rpm /var/cache/urpmi/rpms/libevolution0-1.2.0-5tex.i586.rpm /var/cache/urpmi/rpms/bonobo-conf-0.16-1tex.i586.rpm /var/cache/urpmi/rpms/libaspell15-0.50.2-2tex.i586.rpm /var/cache/urpmi/rpms/gnome-spell-0.5-1tex.i586.rpm Do you want to continue installation ? (y/N) y Installation failed, some files are missing. You may want to update your urpmi database I had just updated, but did so again and got this error: [root@localhost kelly]# urpmi.update unable to take medium "Updates for Mandrake Linux 9.0 (ftp1u)" into account as no list file [/var/lib/urpmi/list.Updates for Mandrake Linux 9.0 (ftp1u)] exists the entry to update is missing (one of Installation CD 1 (x86) (cdrom1), Installation CD 2 (x86) (cdrom2), International CD (x86) (cdrom3), texstar, update_source, Ranger-9.0, downloads) How do I get the ftp1u entry removed or corrected? I am not even sure where it came from to be honest. Will urmpi.removemedia ftp1u do the trick? I don't want to goof it up more by doing this. Thanks for your patience with this newbie!

    Shutdown in kde

Cool, I will give it a try and let you know. I reset earlier in KDE Prefs and so far it has been working for the last 3 times I have booted. We are having some thunderstorms and lightning here so have been shutting down to avoid problems. Thanks for the tip!

    Shutdown in kde

I am having the same problem with KDE. Just did fresh install of ML 9.0 which went well except that my CD1 did not install Koffice. (CD from Linux magazine, not downloaded iso) I downloaded Koffice RPM and install went fine. Previous 8.2 install worked fine too. One time KDE gives me the normal logout display of 3 options: Login as different user / turn off computer / restart computer and the next time I boot I might only see a small dialog box with one option: Logoff If I use this, it takes me to the cmd line login and then I either login again as user or can shutdown with cmd. When I login again, I then get the 3 option box. So far, I haven't found the conflict, but my guess is that it is either a bug in the KDE desktop version, or a conflict of two settings somewhere. Hope someone has an idea?
  11. Memtest86 and a couple other software checks showed my memory was good and it was bad... so you cannot always go by them. But it is ominous that it shows a bad test. If you have multiple chips, try them one at a time, assuming that they are large enough to allow you to boot. (i.e. pull them and leave only one in, if it boots, try replacing it with another, etc. ) That might identify the card that is bad.
  12. DragonMage, Super clear- thanks for the input. I thought I understood, but wanted to double check before I put my foot in it again. It is bedtime here and some heavy lightning so will shut down for safety and try it in the morning.
  13. I recently built a new box using Abit KR7A-133 and use the SB Live card too. The new CPU is working just fine for me now that I got over a bad stick of RAM that just would not work when I first built it. I think ABIT boards are picky about RAM, and I know Linux is too. The ABIT documentation and supplied parts are very complete. I am very happy with Abit quality and there is a website at http://forums.sudhian.com which has good Abit support similar to this one. I got some good info from guys there! I think the top end on the KR7A-133 series is Athalon 2100xp but might be pushing it depending on the BIOS version, so the newer ones are probably better in that area. I just upgraded to 9.0 and it went way smoother than the 8.2 install. On the memory issue, one thing I have had give problems on other PC's I have helped with is corrosion and interaction between dissimilar metals in the RAM slots. Sometimes you get corrosion because of electrolytic action between steel and brass for example. Some brands of RAM are bad about that. You might be able to pull the RAM and clean the contacts with a rubber eraser (old fashioned typewriter types work well) and see if you can clean the onboard connector a bit too. It might salvage the board that is giving you problems. Just make sure you don't let the rubber chips fall into the case!
  14. bvc, Thanks for followup on the TexContrib urpmi thing. That helps me a lot. I saw the -no clean option and wished I had tried it since I had already downloaded all the files. Sigh... I'll try it next time to see if it works for me. Any tips on a good site for downloading / urpmi 'ing Koffice since my cd rom version won't install for some reason? I don't see it on Texstar's site.
  15. DragonMage, I am interested in learning the method you outlined in your reply, but could use a little more clarification. Like you suggested, I downloaded the libgal files and a few others that I remembered from trying to urpmi evolution earlier. But I am sure I do not have them all. You suggested I run rpm -ivh libgal21* I have a question on that syntax. Is the "v" supposed to be capital V? Or is this for verbose setting? I don't want to make things worse! I am also trying to figure out how to know what the dependencies are. Thanks again for your time and assistance. It is super helpful and I am getting more confidence because of all of you that are helping me.
  16. bvc, Tried to update media per your link and having problems with a couple of them. One is perhaps due to a site being down. Using your link: urpmi.addmedia TexContrib ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distribut.../texstar/linux/ distributions/mandrake/9.0/contrib with ./hdlist.cz When I try adding TexContrib I get the following error: `with' missing for ftp media I figured out that there was an extra space(between /texstar/linux/ and distributions/mandrake/9.0/...) probably due to word wrap or something and it messed up the syntax. But when I fixed that it gave me another error: Removed `/var/cache/urpmi/partial/.listing'. --11:56:49-- ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distribut...ntrib/hdlist.cz => `/var/cache/urpmi/partial/hdlist.cz' ==> CWD not required. ==> PASV ... done. ==> RETR hdlist.cz ... No such file `hdlist.cz'. retrieve of source hdlist (or synthesis) failed no hdlist file found for medium "TexContrib" examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.TexContrib.cz] problem reading synthesis file of medium "TexContrib" unable to update medium "TexContrib" Not sure what I need to do to add this one?
  17. Ok, another learning experience. :D This is fun! I added Texstar to urpmi and tried to upgrade my Evolution to 1.2 using his rpm's and rpmdrake. It downloaded them (took a while due to net connection) and then aborted the install due to dependencies: libgal.so.19 is needed by: libgtkhtml 20-1.0.4-4mdk Guppi-0.40.3-1mdk gnucash-1.6.7-1mdk gabber-0.8.7-7-mdk gnumeric-1.0.9-1mdk Looks like the downloaded files all got deleted from /var/cache/urpmi/rpms SHUCKS! Is there a way to install Texstar's Evolution 1.2 and not goof up these other files and dependencies? Any brave souls that can help a noobie work this through?
  18. Thanks for the tip on the fonts. I am just learning how to use urpmi and it is very nice. My net connection is terrible right now so will hold off until they get the speed back up. Life on the internet in SE Asia can be sporadic at times due to long distance involved and other tech issues. :) I did use the Mandrake Control Center--System--Fonts but still not too satisfied with things. I have a full selection, but they still look phoney. Appreciate all of you that help us noobies out!
  19. COOL! I knew there had to be a way to find it but hadn't figured it out. Thanks again for hanging in and checking on this newbie's progress. I got Opera going again and looks like evolution will work. When my net connection is better I hope to try to download the rpm's for KOffice that I cannot get from the CD for some reason. Still working on my fonts. They looked a LOT better in 8.2 than they are looking in 9.0. I was hoping they would be better not worse! Thanks bvc!
  20. Thanks! I am digging around, but as a newbie I haven't figured out what the executable that I need is or where exactly it is located. I have been able to start Opera from cmd line in my home directory by typing 'opera' but not sure if that will work. Guess I will give it a go, eh? So far, I am learning most by the goofs I make. It is time-consuming though.
  21. I am back but bruised from the experience of the 9.0 install! :? Between newbie mistakes and glitches in the install, I ended up having to reformat everything. My CD's were purchased with local Linux magazine and may have a problem with Koffice install files (or my CD ROM cannot read it properly) so it aborted that part. So no Koffice installed. Also, there was no Opera included on the install. Guess I was spoiled by my 8.2 Powerpack and didn't realize that Opera wouldn't be on these CD's. So I downloaded the Opera RPM, used Kpackage and installed, but it doesn't show on menu so I am trying to figure out how to create a menu item for it. Also, the Evolution version is not the latest, so will want to update that as well. Always learning though! Thanks for the help and all the good docs posted on this site that help me through the rough spots. :)
  22. Another quick thought before I go to bed... Does anyone know if you need to put the nopentium entry in for ML 9.0 on startup ?
  23. Terima kasih banyak! Thanks very much! I will give it a go tomorrow and update this post so you know how the 9.0 install went. It is bedtime here in SE Asia so I will do a FRESH install after I get a good night's rest. If anyone else has pointers for this newbie, I'll check in the morning for any more good advice you might care to share. :D
  24. Great advice! Thanks again, you are really helping me make my decision. Another newbie question if I may? If I do a fresh install, and don't "wipe" my home partition, (assume you mean do not reformat my home partition, right?) then I would reformat the other partitions, correct? If I just boot from the 9.0 CD ROM will it work now that LILO is on my hd? I assume it will bypass LILO and go directly to the Install program, right? Having never done it, I wanted to ask before I jump in with both feet. :) Again, thank you for the advice!
  25. Thanks for fast input and option suggestions. Wonder if I could just try to do the one package that is goofy (soup 0.7.9-1.ximian.1) and see if that would resolve it? I just got 9.0 CD's, and plan to upgrade but haven't studied the best way to do it yet. This is a new system (2mos) so isn't too loaded yet and I don't know whether to do fresh install or try to upgrade over the existing 8.2. Anyone have suggestions on best option? I do have some bookmarks I'd like to save, but everything else is pretty expendable. I don't have a CDRW or backup media except for floppy so options are limited.
