  1. What version is your card?

    Different versions use different drivers.

    v1 uses prism_cs

v2-v3 will need ndiswrapper (there's a large post on how to get this working, search for ndiswrapper, poster iphitus)

    v4 uses prism_cs again.

For a more in-depth guide, look here: http://mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=5494

Chances are, if the command (as root)

    /sbin/cardctl ident

returns anything, you can get it to work with native drivers.

  2. /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto,ro,umask=0,exec 0 0
    /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom2 auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec 0 0

Those are my fstab entries for my dvdrom and dvd-burner respectively.

One thing: Make sure you check /dev and make sure the entries are really there. I had an issue where suddenly /dev/hdc didn't exist anymore. Couple of reboots (to Windows and back) and it's back. Not sure what the issue was there.

  3. Well, to narrow it down:

If you pressed Ctrl-Alt-F2, you will be presented with a new login prompt

If you pressed Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, you should just have a command line (maybe) or a new DM session (probable)

My guess is that you pressed Ctrl-Alt-F2 (and got the login screen) and to fix it, just press Ctrl-Alt-F7

  4. The surest sign of OE coming out will be the addition of a new mandrakelinux-release RPM in cooker.

As of about 3 and a half hours ago, it was still the CE one (dated one month ago exactly).

It's that file that I'm waiting on, because it will signify the release of the cooker tree from the version freeze that it is currently in (except for the CE updates, of course).

  5. Boot the install disk

When you get to the point where it says "Press <enter> to install, Press <F1> for more options" press F1 and type the following:

    linux expert

and hit enter. That should load the correct module for that sata drive.

Out of curiosity, and in case this doesn't work: What chipset does you mobo have for the sata controller? Is it a Via chip?

  6. The only fix for the uname -a issue is to recompile your kernel and tell it what kind of processor you have. There's another option for cpu speed reporting, but I forget what it's called.

For the uptime...I'm not sure. Mine reports correctly

    [Coruscant//liquidzoo]$ uname -a
    Linux Coruscant 2.6.8.1-8mdk #1 Fri Sep 3 17:23:25 CEST 2004 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2200+ unknown GNU/Linux
    [Coruscant//liquidzoo]$ uptime
    23:02:41 up 2 days,  8:39,  6 users,  load average: 0.01, 0.01, 0.00
    [Coruscant//liquidzoo]$

  7. How are you loading the gnome-panel?

I had a similar issue when I was using slicker and kicker at the same time. I ended up having to start kicker separately, after everything else loaded.

Just as a question, why are you using both?

  8. Well, those .iso files you downloaded are CD images. You need to burn them to disk as such. In nero (maybe others as well) there is an entry in the File menu for burn cd image.

Once you have done that, I would suggest resizing your partition(s) to allow space for MandrakeLinux to install. You can do this with a program like Partition Magic (version 7 or higher if you have NTFS partitions). Defragging your Windows hard drive before you do this is a very good idea, fyi.

After that is done, pop cd 1 into your drive and reboot your computer. As long as your BIOS is set to boot from cd, you'll be all set. If you resized the partition(s) like I said above and just left some space blank then you'll be good to go with the install.

Compared to some (overpriced) alternatives, Linux installs very quickly. Depending on the packages you install, you can be up and running in as little as 20 minutes (depending, of course, on your hardware).

Of course, we're here to help if you get stuck. Feel free to come and post anything here, or come join us on IRC (see my sig for info, or click on the chat link at the top of the page).

Most of all, welcome to the board and to Linux in general. Hope you find it as enjoyable as most of us do!

  9. From the doom3linux.com forums, I see that I'm not the only one who's had this issue, so I'll share a fix:

I started Doom3 and my screen resized itself to 640x480 and froze. Had to ctrl-alt-backspace to get out of X.

After checking and modifying my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to make sure that 640x480 was a supported resolution, I still had the problem (although this time I could move the mouse around the screen).

I even downgraded xorg from 6.8.1 to 6.7.0 and nothing worked. Turns out I had to just reinstall the nvidia drivers. Now the game works perfectly, and at a better quality than I could ever use on Windows (different computer/hardware, but still...)

  10. Awesome!!!

Servers are a bit full atm. I have it downloaded so if anyone wants a link, please pm me. md5sum (verified correct from the link above) is included in what I have (it's not on the servers, so I created one)
