  1. Great!!

    I'm not the only noob that posted this question.  Ilia, I started the last "discussion" on Gnome v. KDE; it devolved quite quickly into  "who's desktop is better."  So, just to join the crowd...I am a noob (going on three months with linux) and have for the last week and a half or so been using Gnome instead of KDE.  I must say that I like it better.

    Yes, i've just seen your topic, i should have search for it before i post my oun indeed :P

    I like KDE because it is pretty nice & for some reason gnome is much slower at my box, but i think i'll give it a try.

    P.S. What is the last version of Gnome?

  2. You do not really need a proxy.  A better way is to make your linux box act as a router through ip masquerading aka network address translation or nat.  Try using the "ICS" of mandriva found in the mcc.  If you have problems, just search this forum.  Good luck!

    What ?! Can you please translate that to a human language? :o

  3. Hi,

    i usually use KDE and don't know a thing about Gnome. My requerments for desktops are: speed, good looking & easy to use.

    In that terms, what is better KDE or Gnome?

    P.S. What do you think about FluxBox?

  4. Hi,

    I have 2 PC's: one running MDK 10.1 and the othe WinXP. The USB ADSL modem is connected to the XP and i share the connection through an 'Analog X' proxy server. Now, i have some questions:

    1. Is there any other GPL proxy that is better that my one ?

    2. Do i really need a proxy or there is another way?

    Thanks

  5. I've used MDK 10.1 on mu LG L1730S monitor with 1280 x 1024 resolution.

    After changing the HD, i set up LE 2005 and it doesn't want to work with that same settings.

    How is that and how can i fix it?

    10x

    P.S. How do i configure X from command line? :oops: , :wall:

  6. Look, i've worked with win95/98SE/ME/2000/XP at home and at work and i've never encountered serious problems with the drivers. I used only that drivers that were shipped by a hardware supplier, with the hardware you can find at any PC shop.

    About installing windows: i had several probles indeed, but only when i installed 'warez' versions, not the genuine ones.

    Installing time: i've set a dual boot system on my pentium ll (MDK10.1 & winXP).

    It took me about a hour to install windows and the same for MDK(3 discs set).

    Anyway, the topic isn't about Windows' advantages on Linux, its about spesific one: most people that i know prefer windows beause its easyness. To use it, you should not be computer geek or something. Moreover, i agree with what phunni said: you do not alwais have enough time to 'play' with linux, it is for professionals. Unless Linux will be more appealing to an average user - it won't be a number one OS.

    :D

  7. Off-topic'ing this, but no. What you talk about is a particular form of trolling: "insulting". But anything written explicitly to elicit angry responses is trolling, be it about my beard or cross dressing, or about the state of the Linux Desktop.

    The line "prove that i'm wrong" was written to ecourage you do discuss the topic, not to offend, in a matter of a fact it was sort of humor not insult.

    P.S. read my edited topic from today :D

  8. First: Nice troll.

    Second... No, there's no second. If you want to fight, go to a boxing club. If you want an argument, go to Law school. This is a forum where we give help.

    I'm not here to satisfy your sense of entitlement about what Linux can or cannot do. If you think it's difficult, fine. I find Windows more difficult, having had at least ten years to learn to use it. But to each its own. If mandriva is difficult for you, well, tough. Shame you don't tell us what was the problem with it. We might have been able to solve it.

    First: i'm not tring to offend anyone;

    Second: i think it is legal to express my own opinion

    Though i had some problems with Mandriva, i eventually managed to solve them with or withuot forum's help (thank again for all who helped me). I said, that i'm using linux at home too, so there is no reason for you to feel offended.

    Are we cool now?

    You guys took it really personally, well maybe it is my foult. All i wanted to say is that Linux differs from more familiar OSes like WinXP. The topic is about it's usability at home, not at any other places. More ower, i study computer science, i know a bit about computers and i'm open towards new ideas.

    The main problem with Linux, as i see it, is a huge number of distros and the lack of organized support for them. Every distro works a little bit different from another, the help that you can get from the web isn't allways what you are looking for and not necessarily suits your own distro. Some times the help is not written so good or even professional, that is why you should know what are you going to do.

    I have a little brother who learns in a school. He cant use Linux system as i can, and he does not want. Why would he? Everything he needs runs pretty good at XP.

    May be in future all that is going to be changed, and that is good. In my opinion Linux needs standatization, so it will be easy to develop for or operate different distros.

    In order to gain that, you need a strong financial support, and we all know where all that leads (Microsoft).

    What do you think?

  9. I really dougt the bright future of linux as a home desktop, let me explain why:

    inspite of being very powerfull OS, it is very hard to configure. Only true enthuziasts and pros have enough nerves and time to make it work as they need, while most people haven't. For everyday routine people need fust, easy to operate and eye catchy OS such as WinXP. Thay don't need to spent several hours learning and tring to change Linux' desktop resolution from 640x460 to something else from the command line; the same about enabling folder sharing with samba and plenty of other annoing malfunctions with simple programs like XMMS, FireFox ect'.

    I say this because i have a little experience with linux (Mandriva, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora) and i like playing it as a hobby (i'm still so noob!!!).

    Prove me that i'm wrong... :afro:

  10. It's a very disturbing problem: every time i visit Google site the FFox doesn't let me view any othe site.

    For example if i visit www.yahoo.com - no problem;

    then i browse to www.google.com - O.K.;

    if i type www.blablablabla.com i still will see a google page, but the location will be correct, even in a status bar i'll see "Done"

    :help:

  11. "The best distro is one that your local guru knows the best"

    unknown

    You should take the one that is easy to get help with, for me it is MDK10.1 .

    It is fast and easy to learn. I've tried Debian and Fedora and found that MDK is more human for nubs :)

  12. CABLES!  It's a conder you can sit at that desk without getting snared and traped like a wild animal in all those loose dangling cables.  YOu might invest $1.79 in a baggy of cable ties.

    Also, and I know this one is out in left field, but seriously, everyine knows that those LCD's are bad for workng on.  They cause too much eye strain.  Of course, I'm a generous guy so I'll tell you what.  You just box that baby up and ship her on over to me, and I'll send you my CRT.  It's a heart wrencher letting it go, but I could manage I suppose.

    I like my LCD, i don't spend a lot of time in front of the PC and these lcds look nice. Moreower, they take less space on the table.
