  1. I'm using xorg, not xfree86, is there any difference?
  2. You're right, 2006 is a little faster indeed.
  3. Yes, didn't help. Does XFCE saves the session automaticly, or i should tell it? Becouse if it doesn't, than i should try to do what you said one more time.
  4. I have an USB flash mp3 player, iAudio G3 from COWON and it sais it's Linux, Windows & MacOS compatible.
  5. I've installed the MandrivaLinux Free 2006 on my old box. At first, i decided to upgrade previous installation (MDK 10.1), and so i did. The screen was allright (1280 x 1024 res). The upgrade wasn't so good, it missed some packages and coused me a lot of problems, so i formatted the partition and installed from scratch. The new installation solved all problems but now i can't setup the screen res'. The OS recognizes my video card (see spec) but the monitor gives an error message : "out of range 51.1 / 47 hz". My monitor's refresh rate (from manufacturer): horizontal: 30 - 83 kHz vertical: 56 - 75 hz How can i fix this? 10x.
  6. 100%. When i tipe 'xftaskbar4' in a terminal it appears, as long as there is at least one running program; else - it dissapears again.
  7. No, there is no xfce-taskbar there.
  8. Hi, few minutes ago i've installed xfce using urpmi. It worked nicely, but when i load it i couldn't see a taskbar. In addition, there is no terminal (xfceterm) although its icon presents. How do i fix that?
  9. I had something like this in a past, but the broblem just vanished, i don't know why. Anyway, what is "ipv6"?

    Is it safe?

I wonder, is it really safe to update/install rpms from a web. Are there viruses/malisious softare hidden inside rmps and freely distributed on various servers? I remember that some time ago, there was a Linux virus inside FireFox distribution. Could it happen again (yes i assume...)? How can we protect ourself in these cases?
  11. Finally, I did it !!! That's what i got: [root@Linux ilia]# urpmi.addmedia --wget main ftp://ftp.lip6.fr/pub/linu x/distributions/mandrake/10.1/i586/media/main with media_info/synthesis.hdlist.cz added medium main computing md5sum of existing source hdlist (or synthesis) retrieving source hdlist (or synthesis) of "main"... ftp://ftp.lip6.fr/pub/linux/distributions/mandrake/10.1/i586/media/main/media_info/ synthesis.hdlist.cz found probed hdlist (or synthesis) as media_info/synthesis.hdlist.cz ...retrieving done examining hdlist file [/var/cache/urpmi/partial/hdlist.main.cz] examining synthesis file [/var/cache/urpmi/partial/hdlist.main.cz] examining pubkey file of "main"... found 0 headers in cache removing 0 obsolete headers in cache write config file [/etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg] [root@Linux ilia]# I assume tha is what i should see in the end, wright? Anyway, the problem & the solutions: - unproperly configured NAT at the router (i opened port 21 and NATted it to linux box) - curl didn't work for me, so i switched to wget Thank you all for helping me!!!
  12. I've tried to play with urpmi, thats what i got: [root@Linux ilia]# urpmi.addmedia --wget main ftp://mandrake.contactel.cz/Mandrakelinux/official/10.1/i586/media/main with /media_info/synthesis.hdlist_main.cz added medium main computing md5sum of existing source hdlist (or synthesis) retrieving source hdlist (or synthesis) of "main"... ftp://mandrake.contactel.cz/Mandrakelinux/official/10.1/i586/media/main/media_info/ synthesis.hdlist_main.cz retrieval of source hdlist (or synthesis) failed no hdlist file found for medium "main" examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.main.cz] problem reading synthesis file of medium "main" unable to update medium "main" [root@Linux ilia]# urpmi.addmedia main ftp://mandrake.contactel.cz/Mandrakelinux/official/10.1/i586/media/main with /media_info/synthesis.hdlist_main.cz added medium main retrieving source hdlist (or synthesis) of "main"... ftp://mandrake.contactel.cz/Mandrakelinux/official/10.1/i586/media/main/media_info/ synthesis.hdlist_main.cz ...retrieving failed: curl: (7) couldn't connect retrieval of source hdlist (or synthesis) failed no hdlist file found for medium "main" examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.main.cz] problem reading synthesis file of medium "main" unable to update medium "main" - i tried --wget option => nothing - "retrieving failed: curl: (7) couldn't connect" => ??
  13. I found, that i can download the 'hdlist.cz' manually from a mirror using a web browser, but urpmi still cant do that. Any ideas?
  14. Can you point me to some resource/tutorial about configuring FluxBox? (the one written in plain english :D )
  15. Already did. I prefer XFCE, because all other are ugly
  16. Ok, that is one issue. But how can i improve the speed? Win98, for example, runs smoothly on that box, while MDK10.1 doesn't.
  17. That's right, but in case it'll want to download a missing RPM from a web - it wont be able. Maybe that is because wrong urpmi configure (see this post).
  18. I don't. My Primary box is Pentium 4 (winXP), use linux as a hobby, for experiments and other stuff. I installed only FireFox and aMule (solved dependencies by myself, simply following error messages).
  19. Hi, I need an advice. I run MDK 10.1 on a relatively slow box (Pentium 3 192mB). KDE & Gnome run slowly what drives me crazy. I've tried to setup XFCE instead, but unsuccessfully due to GTK problems (missing some crutual parts & only God knows why...). In addition, I can't setup urpmi, it just doesn't connect to any of 1,000,000 servers i tried. I'm desperate. Maybe i just got a wrong distro? ...or is it just me [moved from Other Distributions by spinynorman]

    File browser

If you're using KDE, then you're probably using Konqueror in a filebrowsing mode. In its toolbar there is an icon that enables changing the view: icons, list, detaled...
  21. Is there any way to check that?
  22. www.linux.org.ru - news and other usefull information about Linux OS in russian Added to Worthwhile Links by mystified
  23. www.linux.org ? though basic but very usefull...
  24. I also using MDK 10.1 on my pentium 3 550 mHz 192 mb ram PC, its slow indeed, so i think its a matter of RAM & CPU power amount.
