  1. alistair@localhost~]$followed by the flashing curser - is a linux console.

    alistair - current system user

localhost - your computer's network name, 'localhost' is a default if you didn't specify another name

As i understand, after choosing 'Linux' you don't get a GUI? If this is the case, try this: type startx. This should start the X window server (the GUI).

The "passed" or "failed" checklist - shows you what services linux is loading and whether it succeeded or not.

Can you tell us what services failed to load?

  2. I have a free partition on my Linux box so i desided to try one of the 'for pros only' distros - gentoo.

I've downloaded a liveCD 2006.0 but it doesn't want to boot on my pentium 3. It sais there was a disc error. On pentium 4 it does ok, i was even able to play it for some time. How can i install it on p3 without booting the graphycs?

    Thanks

  3. You can do it from a spetial logout button in your desktop manager (KDE, Gnome...) or type this as root:

    shutdown -h now

    -h means halt

now performs the command (shutdown & its options) right now

for more info on shutdown command type 'man shutdown' in console

  4. Welcome!

I'm using linux for about a year, so i might be considered a noob and i prefere Mandriva. Tried Debian, Fedora - gread distros but Mandriva takes tham all by its simplicity and hardware recognition. Plus - you got this forum, exellent place to ask questions and get really good answers!

  5. Hi

I've installed a win32-codecs package on mandriva2006, but even now i can't play a 'windows media 9' file format. How do i enable its playback?

I olso would like XMMS to support wma format, but cant make it play.

Please help me with this :D

  6. I often use a shared folder on xp box. Usually it is done through nautilus->network->XPbox->....

The question is how this connection occures - does nautilus mount the remote folder or simply browse it?

Is it better to mount the remote folder on local mashine and than access it?

    Thanks.

  7. Looks like Diablo doesn't like Wine very much. I would jump straight to Cedega and see if that works.

    http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?versionId=47

Cedega is usually a better option for gaming anyway.

EDIT: Looks like cedega has some of the same problems. http://cedegawiki.sweetleafstudios.com/wiki/Diablo

    Well... bummer...

I'm running out of games to try on my box (got only diablo and starcraft) must borrow some from my brother...

    Thanks anyway too all.

  8. I tend to use the windows method, because you'll have settings within wine that tell you what drive letter has been assigned to your cdrom, so:

    wine "d:\path_to\game.exe"

the quotes are important, so use these. If unsure of CD-ROM drive letter, from console type:

    winecfg

the info will all be in there somewhere under one of the tabs.

O.K. but what about the graphycs?

  9. Hi, i'm new to linux gaming and wine and i have a problem:

I've installed Diablo on mandriva2006 using 'wine /mnt/cd-rom/bla-bla-bla/setup.exe' . Now, when i try to play the game i can hear the sound but i get no picture... only intro movies.

Please help, this is my first try with wine!

  10. Is there any way to test a urpmi mirror site for speed before actually downloading a package?

The are no mirrors in my region so i tend to use european ones (german, czech) and some of them are reaaly slow...

  11. Hi,

    1. I want to update my mandriva2006, i'll take few hours i presume, so the question is: can i start the update, that pause it for, say a day or two, and than resume from the last point?

    2. How can interrupt the urpmi while installing and not by closing the console?

    Thanks
