  1. I agree with Adamw. Root is a profile for administration tasks only. There is not reason to login as root to do work as a standard user (using konqueror, openoffice...). It is extremily dangerous to do it. For exemple, Imagine surfing on internet and that a program is installled in a sensible place where only root has acces ? In this way your box becomes vulnerable. You open all the gates to all potential risks. Even on Win XP I recommend highly to use only the profile Administrator for administration matters and to use a profile as limited user for the rest. That's the reason, I guess, why a standard user is proposed to be created when mandrakelinux is installed and not to allow to login as root initially. This is one of the reasons why I consider Mandrakelinux more secure than Win XP. Ciao.
  2. I am new on Linux too. Many years ago I worked a little bit on Unix. For the past two years I worked mainly Win XP and OS400 (AS400 from IBM). Several months ago I started to work on linux Debian but I let it down because I found it not very friendly. I installed Mandrakelinux 10.1 two weeks ago on an old PIII (That I bought in 1996 with Win 98, 64 Mo RAM and 10 Go HD). I had some problems to install it because I wanted to install all groups (servers...) and the graphical interface (DKE). I then joined mandrakeusers.org to have some help. It was very useful to have quick responses. Even when the solution is not provided it helps very much because it motivates to go forward looking for the solution and not to abandone. The solution was to upgrade the RAM (I added 256 Mo) and to change the graphical board. Since then I enjoy very much myself with mandrakelinux. I find it very powerful (servers, services and applications all in one), stable, robust and precieusly friendly with its graphical interface (DKE). I highly recommend you to install the official version 10.1 with its graphical interface (DKE). Bye.
  3. Well, my conclusion is that the linux driver is required if I want to print from my linux box on the printer Samsung SCX-1152F connected to the XP box. In order to be sure, I disconnected the JBC4000 printer from the linux box and connected it to the XP box. I installed its driver on the XP box. On the XP box I set it up as shared and as printer by default. I declared it on the linux box as a printer on a SMB server. I completed the data required fot the configuration. The driver for this printer exists on mandrakelinux so I selected it. And it works. Thanks for all the responses. I hope this experience will be helpful to others. Bye
  4. Thanks for your responses. I verified into the Services of the Center of Controle of Mandrake and the Samba SBM network services and the CUPS services are running and are configurated to run from the starting up of the machine. CUPS is cofigurated to detect automatically other printers on the network. I had set up the printer as being on a SMB server. You will find here below what I obtain after executing the command you recommended : Domain=[HP1] OS=[Windows 5.1] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager] Sharename Type Comment --------- ---- ------- IPC$ IPC IPC distant print$ Disk Pilotes d'imprimantes SharedDocs Disk 2005 Disk Samsung Printer Samsung SCX-1150 Series Domain=[HP1] OS=[Windows 5.1] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager] Server Comment --------- ------- Workgroup Master --------- ------- CUPS proposes drivers for other Samsung printers but not for this one. I have tried with some other Samsung drivers proposed by Mandrakelinux but without succes. I even arrive to see the test to print on the printing panel of Windows. The document to print arrives up to the printer but it is not printed. Would be only the installation of the right driver the only solution ? Thanks in advance.
  5. Have you gone already to the Controle Center of Mandrakelinux ? If not go and see the Mounting points and the Local disk sharing. This allows to manage the acces on your linux box. Bye.
  6. I have a Samsung SCX-1150F multipurpose (printing, scaning and faxing) printer connected locally (USB) to my Win XP Home desktop. It works well. This printer is shared. I can print on this printer from my Win XP Pro laptop too. I have installed mandrakelinux V 10.1 on a PIII. One Canon BJC4000 printer is connected locally on the parallel port. It works well. From the XP desktop I can print on the two printers. But on the mandrakelinux I can print only on the Canon BJC400. I do not arrive to print on the Samsung printer. I have tried all I can. I think that the only solution would be to have the driver for mandrakelinux for this printer. I could not find it on the Samsung website. Does any one could telle me where I could find it to install it on my PIII ? Thanks in advace.
  7. I would say that your BIOS is not properly configurated to install Mandrakelinux. Verify if the configuration of the PNP OS installed parameter is set on NO. Otherwise it will not allow you to install Mandrakelinux but only windows OS. Could you tell us which is processor and the RAM capacity on your PC ? Verify also if the parameters : - Boot Sequence or First boot device is fixed for the CD on the BIOS. - Paralle port is on ECP+EPP or at least on of the two if you want to use a local printer Bye

    Wine difficulties

Wine runs on my Mandrakelinux 10.1. Tanking into account this and the description of your message, I would say that your problem comes from a deficiency of memory (RAM). How much Mo of memory has your computer ? Ciao.
  9. IBM supports Red Hat. A Value Added Retailer sells Debian on the AS400 from IBM. They create two partitions, one for the OS400 and the other for linux. Two ethernet cards are required, one for each OS. Some firms have already running linux on this machines together with the OS400. Could any one tell me if Mandrakelinux can run on a AS400 ? If so, could you tell me where and what for ? Thanks in advance
Le menu d'installationme propose 4 possibilités : - vgalo for all resolution graphical installation - text for text installation instead of the graphical one - linux for standard graphical installation at normal resolution - expert for expert graphical installation at normal resolution laquelle faut-il choisir ? Vers la fin de l'installation j'obtiens le message suivant : " Une erreur est survenue idconfig failed" Il a une carte PCI VGA. Il s'agit d'un pc de marque Sunbook qui avait Windows 98. Merci d'avance de la réponse.
  14. Problème résolu. Ciao. [see the end of the thread for a summary in English]
