  1. :P I'm well happy. Just upgraded to LE2005 using the URPMI sources, and it works fine. Only had a couple of errors:

Mount usb file system mount: fs type usbdevfs not supported by kernel.

Issue with lm_sensors (so I removed it)

Issue with postfix (so I removed that too)

So the only one remaining is the one above about usbdevfs.

  2. To check which kernel you're running, type the following:

    uname -r

This will then output what is currently active. There doesn't seem to be a kernel source for i686, so I would assume that you would install the kernel source you found already. Make sure it matches your existing kernel! The one that mentions "source" in it is your kernel source. The other, is another kernel version (i586).

  3. Thanks! I hope it works!

Reason why I'm attempting this way is that I don't have access to a faster link, and therefore updating 242MB isn't that bad, compared to downloading 2GB of ISO media.

My major worries are that it's XFree86 with 10.0 and XOrg with the later versions. Hopefully, it'll sort itself out on reboot, and not attempt to run both at the same time!!

Ah, well, this afternoon will tell where I end up! It'll sure be fun anyway :P

  4. I'm upgrading MDK 10.0 OE to MDV LE2005, and found that I've had to add all sources, as when I just had updates, it said I couldn't satisfy dependencies.

    I added:

    main

    contrib

    jpackage

    updates

    plf-free

    plf-nonfree

I removed all other sources prior to the upgrade though, so that it doesn't pull anything from older unwanted sources.

Well, saying that, I'm still in the process of the upgrade! I only have 128Kbps broadband here, and 242MB to download, so it will be kept busy for a couple of hours if not more! (I estimate 50MB per hour, so will be about 2pm/3pm or so).

  5. I spoke to the support people, and they say there's nothing you can do about it. I mentioned being able to create the directory and zero byte file, but they said they couldn't comment on this!

Guess will have to live with the error! Solved I guess :P

  6. SoulSe,

  7. Have MDK 10.0. Installed the ATI Radeon drivers (card is 9250, R925 version).

I ran the fglrxconfig which is what I'm apparently supposed to do, but when I run glxgears, the performance is worse than my laptop.

    Spec of the machine is:

    AMD Sempron 2300, 256MB RAM, 10GB HDD, ATI Radeon 9250 128MB.

The glxgears comes back with 288fps, which my laptop comes back with well over double if not more! (laptop spec is Celeron 2.2GHz, 1GB RAM, 20GB HDD - video Intel, presume 64MB).

Is there anything I can do to speed this up, as the card should perform a lot better than this!!

  8. Can't seem to get sound to work. I installed alsa-1.0.8, I edited the modules.conf to put the right info in place, and then from a Konsole window in KDE, I ran alsaconf.

I rebooted, and found that alsa is now loading correctly on bootup, and does so successfully, but I still can't get sound in KDE. It errors all the time.

    Any ideas, please help!

  9. Update:

I updated the kernel and this didn't resolve the problem. Now running 2.6.3-25. The kernel source is also installed.

I then downloaded the alsa-drivers, alsa-lib and alsa-utils from the alsa website, and ran the following

    alsa-drivers:

    ./configure
    make
    make install
    ./snddevices

    alsa-lib:

    ./configure
    make
    make install

    alsa-utils:

    ./configure
    make
    make install

I've rebooted many a times, and still having problems. I checked the modules.conf file that Realtek suggest modifying in /etc and it now contains the following lines:

    alias char-major-116 snd
    options snd major=116 cards_limit=1
    alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
    options snd-intel8x0 index=o id="ICH"
    alias char-major-14 soundcore
    alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
    alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
    alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
    alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
    alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
    alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
    post-install sound-slot-0 /bin/aumix-minimal -f /etc/.aumixrc -L >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
    pre-remove sound-slot-0 /bin/aumix-minimal -f /etc/.aumixrc -S >/dev/null 2>&1 || :

I've no idea where to turn next. :help:

  10. I'm wanting to be able to drop files on another MDK machine on my network. How would I go about doing this?

I don't want to share it with Windows, which is why I've not done anything with samba as of yet. I'm assuming it's done a different way when it's just one Linux machine and another?!?

  11. I can't seem to get this to work. This is what I've done so far, and now I'm stuck.

    1. Installed kernel-source-2.6.3-7.

    2. Ran ./configure from the alsa-driver-1.0.4 directory (downloaded from Realtek).

    3. Ran make.

    4. Ran make install.

    5. Ran ./snddevices

The part I'm now stuck on is apparently, I have to put some lines in the /etc/modules.conf file and I have no idea as to which ones.

Am I better just upgrading the kernel to perhaps resolve the problem?

As mentioned, the sound card is a Realtek AC97, and it's on a Gigabyte system board, that has the Nvidia extensions (if that helps).

  12. With regards to the CD's you'll be fine. I used 700MB CDR80 to burn mine, and the images were marked as around 700MB.

In terms of the MBR, if you're going to reinstall Mandriva afterwards, the install process will ask you where you want to put the LILO bootloader. Make sure MBR is selected, and everything will be fine.

It's only if you're not going to use Linux at all, that you need to fix the MBR to let Windows boot. Even if you remove Linux, the LILO will still exist in the MBR unless you removed it prior to removing Mandriva.

I have reinstalled many a time, and not fixed the MBR to boot Windows prior to installing Mandriva.
