Technonoid
I was just browsing around the Downloads and came upon this kernel. Never seen it before. What raises my eyebrow is in its name i686 with i586.rpm. Can someone explain what other than it can access up to or more than 4GB of ram, what its for? And why it has i686? kernel-i686-up-4GB-2.4.22.21mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm

Guest kuchwas
Could you or another contributor please help to answer the questions, please? Sincerely, Richard L. Here is a great page that shows all of the Mandrake 9.2 kernels. This is the one you asked about: kernel-i686-up-4GB-2.4 the high-memory kernel for single-processor (uni-processor) machines Available in "main", and therefore in the Standard Edition and downloaded ISO images. i686-optimised, single processor, highmem support for 4 GB or less Typically the kernel carries a name in the form of "kernel-i686-up-4GB-2.4.22.5mdk", indicating the Linux kernel release ("2.4.22"), and the Mandrake's patch release ("5"). Normally, this kernel carries the same release number as the standard Mandrake kernel and is released in tandem.
Technonoid
Hmmm, thats cool. But why is it in a i586 rpm if its i686 optimised ? And, has anyone used this kernel yet ? If so, what do you think of it ?
