Hello,

I just tried to use userdrake from the kde configuration

menu and it asked for root password I typed it in

correctly and it gave me this message.

The password you typed is invalid.

Please try again.

I tried typing in password and hitting enter also, clicking the OK button.

Also tried starting from eterm window as superuser still

same result invalid password.

A little follow-up, if bring up userdrake and it ask's for password

I click on unprivileged button userdrake opens and there I am. 8-|

Not a good thing right?

Where would I look to correct this.

Mcc and Hardrake seem to work correctly.

MDK 9.1

Athlon single

updates installed

First check the basic things:

Is the caps lock on or off when you type the password? The password is case-sensitive, meaning that typing "BLAH" is not the same thing as typing "blah"

And make sure you're typing the password correctly.

Aside from that, my knowledge of this issue is non-existent.

I am trying to reproduce the problem here and cannot. Let me check if I am following the same steps as you.

Is this what you are doing? :

K-->What to do?-->Administer your system-->Manage users

When I do that, it asks my pwd and I enter it and it goes to userdrake and all the icons and menus are available to be used.

If I click the Unprivileged user button, it opens userdrake, but I cannot use all the menu items as some are not allowed (grayed out)

Not sure what's wrong, but sounds like a permission setting somewhere is wrong if it blocks your root pwd and allows you in as unprivileged. Are you sure you can use the menus as an unprivileged user? On mine all I can do is view things... no setting changes allowed.

Which version of KDE are you running? You can see it in K-->What to do?-->Administer your system-->Configure KDE dialog window.

I am using 3.1.3 texstar here and everything seems normal. I'm guessing this is perhaps a kdesu issue too, but at this point it is too early to know for sure.

EDIT: Did you by chance click the box "Keep password" when you used MCC or another gui tool? Or perhaps your kdesu is caching the password and you don't need to enter it? Either of these things might cause the situation you described.

Hi kmack,

Is this what you are doing? :

K-->What to do?-->Administer your system-->Manage users

No I do K-->configuration-->other-->userdrake

or from xterm or eterm I type "userdrake"

also if I become super user and type "userdrake" it gives me this error

The password you typed is invalid.

Please try again.

If I click the Unprivileged user button, it opens userdrake, but I cannot use all the menu items as some are not allowed (grayed out)

Same here, I just checked it, I think I paniced :oops:

Which version of KDE are you running?

kde 3.1.4 texstar

EDIT: Did you by chance click the box "Keep password" when you used MCC or another gui tool? Or perhaps your kdesu is caching the password and you don't need to enter it? Either of these things might cause the situation you described.

No I did not save password.

If I start userdrake and just click the OK button with out typing a password it keeps asking for a password.

I think we're getting to the same interface via a different menu lineup. Mine works via both menu paths.

Have you posted a question on the texstar site yet? He monitors here now and then, but he's a busy guy so it would be faster to try there.

Your problem is curious so I'll keep poking on it a bit to see if I can come up with anything, but so far I don't have a solution. At least you are not "wide open" security-wise. If I find anything, I'll let you know.

I've looked at some log files sys,auth,... and the common thing I could find was

userdrake(pam_unix) auth could not identify password for [root]

I'm going to check out texstar's site as you suggested and see what I can

find if nothing there I might start exploring pam

(new territory for me:-)

Thanks, mikey_111

I had this same problem in 9.1 even after trying to 'su' to root in a console and then typing userdrake. Even reinstalling userdrake and all the draktools didn't help. I even tried changing my root password to no avail. Since then I have reinstalled the whole system and I do not have that problem. I suggest that you do (as root) in a console

rpm -qa | grep pam

and reinstall anything with the word 'pam' in it, by putting the right disk in and manually browsing to the rpm directory and typing

rpm -ivh --replacefiles --replacepkgs pam-<<whatever>>

for each one. I suggest this because trying to uninstall anything related to pam could lead to some dependency issues.

Or maybe try first to

urpmi pam

and pick each one that the list gives you and maybe there are updates for them and it'll be easier.

Success! :D I think anyways.

Thanks for the lead Steve, was checking out Pam when I saw your post

and thought about checking out what Webmin could do.

So went under System-->Pam authentication-->userdrake

deleted userdrake and created a new one. It works properly now. As

user lets me look at things and root password lets me change things.

Going to have to read more of the documentation on Linux-PAM

make sure its locked up right.

Thanks kmack and Steve for the help
